Getting around Disney with ALS

Hello Folks:

My family and I are going to WDW in August, VERy excited! I'm not able to extend my arms out to hold hand grips on a scooter (I have a PWC at home), but not sure if we could take this when flying from NS Canada. My arms, hans and shoulders are too weak to even move a manual wheelchair. So if manual is the only option it will make far more work for my family. How do others with ALS normally get around in the parks?

Thanks,
Darryl

In the U.S. wheelchairs and other mobility devices can be transported by air at no extra charge. This includes power wheelchairs.
You should be able to bring your power wheelchair from Canada if you want to - check with your airline.
Many people choose not to fly with a power wheelchair - there is a chance of damage and many people don't want to take the chance, even if it is small. If you do decide to fly with it, contact your supplier for hints on how best to prepare it for flight.

If you have or can get a manual chair, I would suggest bringing it with you. That way you will have it for use in the airports.
There are companies that rent power wheelchairs - most of them only rent to people who are already are skilled at using one at home. (I know you are, but adding that for other readers).
Check out post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread for companies, then visit the websites and see if any rent a similar model to yours. CARE Medical is one of the listed ones and is a full service medical supply company, so they may have options that are not available from the others.
Be prepared with the make and model of your power wheelchair, plus settings - like top speed, turning speed, etc. You may just have the defaults on yours, but many people have customized settings. You can get them from your supplier.

Having a manual and a power chair available us useful. You will be driving the chair more than at home, so might tire quicker. Having a manual chair too will enable someone else to push you if you are too tired yo drive for the day.

The disABILITIES FAQs thread also has a lot more information that should be helpful to you, do take a look around.

The PCs I' be rented were pretty generic. Like a Hoverround. If you need extra support, for your torso I would ask the vendor what fits and do they have accommodations to personalize the chair to your needs. I hope you have a great trip.

i know with air canada you can bring your chair i havent been to the parks to give feed back for once your their but my bffs cousin has gone multiply times and usually brings a fully body electrical chair
