Tips to Handle Motion Sickness?

Our trip is approaching! I can handle roller coasters and straight drops, but spinning and simulators tend to nauseate me.

What do you recommend? Certain types of medication? Herbal supplements? Foods to eat or to avoid? Timing of eating?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Even with medicine I can't do Forbidden Journey- if it is a must for you- I would save it for right before you're planning on going back to the hotel

I use Meclizine ( prescription) and I make sure I have eaten at least something that morning.Earlier in the day is best for me.If I ride later in the day after other things, not even the Meclizine works.Next visit I will have my Dr give me a scopalimine patch

I went to Universal last year for the first time and planning to go again this year. I do get motion sickness and did find a way to go on the forbidden journey multiple times. I have a prescription for the motion sickness patches, transderm scope, which I wore the entire trip (these saved me when I went on a cruise). The other thing that allowed me to enjoy the ride was the friend who rode next to me. A portion of the ride is visual with the 3D classes (as you are moving), she would tell me when to close my eyes (3D visual) and when to open them (real life fixtures, hope that makes sense).
*I know different people have different triggers, so as to the other rides - I did not even attempt the dueling dragons nor the rockin roller coaster. I was fine on the hippogriff, but the minion ride did me in.

I get sick on most rides but what helps me is Bonine. It's over the counter and it works. I take it in the morning and by the time we go on rides it's working. Also if I start to get that sick feeling I close my eyes and take deep breaths. It really does work. You can still hear what is going on so you really aren't missing much. Hope this helps.

Dramamine/Bonine did nothing for me--especially for FJ. The Scopalamine patch (transderm) was a lifesaver. I was able to ride everything, including FJ, with no issues at all--the first time I tried FJ with Bonine, I came within seconds of throwing up, so that gives you an indication of how helpful the patch was for me.

Bonine works for me, but I start taking it the ONE to TWO DAYS BEFORE I plan on doing rides. I also take it the morning of. I think that is the trick- get it in your system early. If I only take it the morning of, it doesn't work.

Questoion for the people who use the patch- did you experience side effects? I tend to be susceptible to side effects and I'm not sure I want to risk the side effects of the patch.

I thought about that - but I HATE lines and wanted to take advantage of early park admission. I suppose we could save it for around 8:30 pm or so.

I have also heard that The Simpsons ride can be rough, but I know that is a must do for my DD.

Don't know what your crowd level will be like - but when I went (Saturday - busy, Sunday - slow, Monday - slow), FJ was practically a walk on during the last 1-2 hours of the day. Not sure about EA (we never made it), but I noticed from watching the app that the first 1-2 hours of park open was the busiest times for FJ. After 11/12pm, it calmed down and was between 15-30 mins for the afternoon.

Nice! Would be great to be that lucky.

By the way, we did FJ about 6ish (on the "busy" Saturday when the park closed at 8pm). I think it posted about 20-30 mins wait, It was about 15 mins, just about a walk on (if u want to see the queue) which worked well for our first ride.

My suggestion was ginger gum or candy. I get motion sick (just nauseous) flying too. I take Dramimine but it makes me tired and last time I used Ginger gum and dramimine. I also plan on asking my doctor before we go (in Nov) so now I can ask her about that patch. On the plane, it helps if I look straight ahead, especially during take off and landing. I keep the window closed. I just don't ride most of the thrill rides anymore and I absolutely cannot do anything that spins.

These Gin Gin candies work!! I ate one before going on a ride (coaster) I thought might give me issues and I didn't feel any effects of motion sickness. A few rides later, though, i was feeling yucky after a different ride (another coaster) and I ate a candy. It quickly calmed my stomach and made me feel better! It doesn't do anything for dizziness/vertigo though. I thought I would share my experience with this candy and vouch for its effectiveness. You might have to acquire a taste for it, though. It is kind of spicy like cinnamon and has a weird gummy/ chewy texture.

Seriously, the prescription for the patch behind the ear works WONDERS. I wore it this trip and could to Forbidden Journey and Simpsons NO PROBLEM (would throw up with dramamine and bonine). It does cause fuzzy vision when reading and I was thirsty, but it wasn't that big of a deal and SO WORTH IT.
