Just need to vent for a minute....

It doesn't seem high to me. I live 20-30 min from the airport in Boston and a cab costs me $50-60.
Yup. I live 30 minutes/17 miles from Logan, and I needed to take a cab right after they went from flat rate to meter for my city. $80!!!!!

OP: I've seen a suggestion to take a free shuttle to an off-airport car rental agency and have Über's pick you up there.

As a PP mentioned, taxi fares are mostly per mile. I looked up the rates and NYC rate is $2.50/mile and Orlando is $2.40/mile. The cost is due to the distance traveled, not the time involved.

Plus, offsite shuttles to the parks can be really unreliable ... and sporadic. Unless I were staying ONsite, I would never want to be without a car.

This. Offsite shuttles are extremely inconvenient as well. They drop off and pick up at remote locations. Lots of reasons to rethink this decision.

theres only two of us...so nothing is really cost effective. wahhh :crazy2:...we thought about renting a car (we are actually getting one for our second part of our trip to visit family), but our hotel is 17$ a day for parking. I know I need to just suck it up and get a shuttle or convince myself the ease of a taxi is worth it...but i don't want to lol. luckily, our hotel offers a shuttle to the parks for free, just not to the airport.

Super Shuttle is a shared service. It will take you all over the area before you get to your hotel. Our time is valuable to. We would never do this. Paying to park is the tradeoff of a off site hotel.

I know I only feel this way because I *personally* don't think about Orlando as a metropolitan area & therefore think cabs are cheaper so I can subsequently stuff my face full of mickey bars and turkey legs :)

Your bad:tongue:

I didn't want to be the bearer of bad tidings, and the truth is, I have no experience with offsite shuttles. We stay offsite and drive to the parks (works great!). However, I have read and heard HORROR stories about offsite shuttles to and from the parks. Unless I (or someone I knew and trusted) had first-hand experience with the particular offsite hotel and it's shuttles, I wouldn't be at their mercy.

As good of a job as Disney does with shuttling people around, I've found THEIR service lacking at times - particularly when I'm at the parks and waiting for shuttle to take me back to my resort.

Maybe others have more patience than me though!

we booked a super shuttle because I just can't bring myself to do a cab...just too much $$$. I am very used to public transport, so my patience for a tough ride with the offsite shuttles should be good enough. if not, we may end up getting a car after the first day of using the shuttle lol.

Offsite shuttles are NOT like public transportation. I don't remember when your trip is, but contact your hotel ahead of time and find out their shuttle schedule. When we last stayed offsite, there were only two times to go TO the parks (I want to say something like 9am and 11am) and two times to return from the parks (I think 3pm and 9pm). In addition, the shuttle stopped at other resorts (not that big of a deal), but only dropped off/picked up at TTC. VERY inconvenient.

I agree that it's ridiculous Uber has been locked out of MCO by the taxi lobby. But then that protects the cab's ability to charge outrageous fares.

I thought the ball was in Uber's court and them not wanting to pay the same fees that all other transportation companies pay.

Almost every post I have read about people using off site hotel transport ends with the OP posting back that after just a few days they either used taxis or rented a car. The only good one I have read about is Bonnet Creek.

DD25 and I are staying at Bonnet Creek in November for the W&D half marathon. Do you think this is cheating, underhanded, etc., or acceptable... We know we will have to take a lot of taxi's/Uber's but someone suggested to us to use WDW transportation to CBR and catching a taxi/Uber from there, as it is only 1-2 miles from Bonnet Creek. Same thing in the mornings, taxi to CBR and WDW transportation to the parks. Since I am using Wyndham points for Bonnet Creek, we won't be shelling out money for the condo. We thought about staying onsite, but decided we would spend WAY less using taxi's than booking a room for 5 nights onsite when I can get them with my points. Neither of us want to drive a rental car around Disney property and I think I would spend less on the taxi's anyway (right now it is $300+ for 5 day car rental). Any opinions? We will rent a towncar for to/from airport so we can stop for groceries for the condo (full kitchen, yay!).

If you're talking about taking the Magical Express from the airport to CBR, I don't think they'll take you unless you're a registered guest.

However, once you're on property, you can use intra-WDW transportation to the fullest.

I don't have any experience with the resort, so I can't weigh in on whether it makes sense to take a cab to and from CBR every day. The other 2 choices I can think of are just taking cabs to the parks, though I don't know how easy it is to get a cab to take you from the parks back to your resort, and the other choice is to just use your hotel's shuttle system. PP "chartle" above indicates that there have been good reports about that shuttle system.

For sure, though, once you're at a WDW resort or park, you can use WDW transportation to get around inside the resort - whether bus, boat or monorail. For instance, if you had a breakfast ADR at Grand Floridian, you could take a cab to the GF, and then take the monorail to the MK.

No, we will take town car or Mears shuttle to Bonnet Creek. Bonnet Creek charges $6 pp round trip for their shuttle and you have to know when you are returning to the resort when you take it (or so I have heard. If anyone knows different, please let me know!), so we will probably avoid the shuttle and just taxi/uber to the nearest Disney property, then take Disney transportation. Thanks!

I would keep checking car rates. They will most likely drop. And while you can go to CBR and hop on their bus, it will chew up a chunk of time. Depending on the route the resort bus is taking, you may spend 15-20 minutes on the bus after you get on, going around the resort. Don't get so caught up in saving money that you waste a lot of time. Remember time is money at WDW.

One way to get Uber is to get off airport property and get picked up. You can take a free shuttle to the hotels just north of the airport and get Uber to pick you up there. Yeah it's a bit back handed, but it gets around a policy put in place to protect the establishment at MCO.

I hear you on parking fees at hotels doubling the cost of your rental car too. All non-Disney properties seem to charge parking and resort fees these days. Sooner or later Disney will monetize these itmes and charge them too.

Hmmm...I think I might just do this. We are staying onsite at Universal in May and the cost of a cab/shuttle for our family of 4 is nuts. I do prefer Uber - drivers are way better & friendlier than most cab drivers I have met. We are also considering renting a car - but car rental rates are nuts right now so waiting and continuing to check since we just want the car for about 1-2 hours to avoid the hefty parking fees.

I will keep checking, but neither of us wants to drive in an unfamiliar area. We just went in February and stayed at All Star Sports as DD25 was paying for the trip. It was our first trip to WDW and we only took Disney busses. While we did wait a few times, we both felt that we got to do/see everything we wanted to do while we were there and we were happy as we were getting to spend time together (we live in different states). Since the November trip will be our 3rd trip this year (driving down in September with DH driving for a whole family trip!), I think we will be fine with WDW transportation. My main concern is getting to Epcot to get picked up for our shuttle to ESPN center for the race start and back to Bonnet Creek from Epcot after the race. It is a night race and we will be leaving the after party sometime around 2-3 am. We would rather take a taxi and be picked up / dropped off at the park entrance and Bonnet Creek door, than to have to walk through parking lots at this time of early morning.

You could rent a car and return it at a location near your hotel the same day. Many car rental companies are like enterprise and will shuttle you back to your hotel.

You may want to call them - I have seen other runners in the wine and dine forum staying there on a race package saying that it includes race transportation.

One thing you could do is take a cab from MCO to the Marriot Lakeside (it's only 2 miles) and have Uber pick you up from there.

I did hear you could take the free shuttle from MCO to the rental car area and uber is allowed to pick you up from there.
