To rent or not to rent? Point delimma...

Dilemma-- I am banking points for BLT (179 to be banked!), and have used most of my 2015 BWV points. Traveling to DW in early 2017.

I'm looking at 5 days BWV (using current 2016 use year points) and 5 days BLT (using 2015 banked points), but will have too many BLT points if family does not come with. We don't want to lose any precious BLT points!!

We usually do a 1bd but if there's family then we will do a 2bd.

I'm thinking about renting out appx 50 BLT points now, just in case we don't need a 2bd.

Even if we "over" rent we could use our BLT 2016 points, and there are no wasted 2015 banked points. Sounds like I should rent? Nay? Yay?

Just looking for advice!!

I'm thinking 50 points could be quite difficult to rent as its a low number.

Could you add an extra night to your trip if you don't need the 2 bedroom?

You could rent them through David's, stash the money, and then "buy" one time use points (they are capped by a number) from DVC if you are short.

Oh ok. Thx. I didn't know about David's minimum!

I'm going to bank the points and see what happens next year. The problem is that we LOVE the boardwalk area, and want at least 4 nights there. Our vacation time does not allow for more than 10 days in a row. 6 days in a 1bd at bay lake means we could lose 11 points ;(.

I guess we could spoil ourselves with a 2 bd at bay lake for 5 days, and a 1bd at boardwalk for 5 days. We only have a 5 yr old and a 2 yr old. A 2 bd just seems excessive unless another family comes with!!

Lol. Thanks everyone!!!

What i would probably do in this situation if i thought it worth it is to book my 5 nights at BLT but only book 4 nights at VWL at 11 months. Then at 7 months use my BLT points to book 1 last night and bank the spare BWV points.

To make sure you get the room you could have a 1 night reservation made at 11 months at BWV which you cancel and replace at 7 months with a reservation made on BLT points.

Complicated but it can work

Thanks! Good idea... We are still toying btwn 5 or 6 nights at BLT.

The concern is that we are std room lovers, although we like 1bds. Hopefully the BWV std 1bd is easy to get at the 7mo mark for our last night. Makes sense and thank you!

Otherwise we lose 11 BLT points (1bd std for 6 days) which I would hate.

The theme park view 1 bd is the same amount of points as a std 2bd (199 points) for 5 nights! Is it me? I would much rather have a 2bd, no view, on a lower floor!!

Dilemma, dilemma.... Not a bad one to have ;)

Why not try a LV at BLT since you have the points available? But depending on the dates you're looking to travel you can probably use the BLT points at BWV although it might not be standard view. But again, depending on the dates it might be since 1BR's usually book last.

The TimeShare Store (a sponser of these boards) also does rentals. Not sure if they have a minimum. We once had 36 unexpected points from a resale contract and TSS rented them for us...granted, they were "distressed", we only had a couple of months to use them and had no plans to go to Disney at that time.

How about a split stay at BLT? Lake view a few nights and then theme park view? BLT is one of the easiest DVC resorts to change rooms. Close parking, elevators galore.

We once lost points early on in our DVC days....never again!!! I would rather have more room that I don't need than losing any points.

Good luck with your "dilemma".

Forgot to add that the people that rented our 36 points were somewhat local and wanted a long weekend. I think there are many people like that. A nice "getaway" for them.

Oh, and yes, it's possbile to 50 points, or even less and if you can't find a broker its relatively easy to do yourself. I've rented as few as 30 points and I'm sure there are people looking to book just a couple nights now and then.

It kills us not to use std rooms... And bc we have the 11mo advantage, it's so easy to book. No stressing!

Thanks for the options. The thing is... Is a lake view that much nicer than std view? I think i would rather a 2bd for 5 days and use 20 extra points over a 1bd for 6 days and lose 11pts. The space would be nice!

For BWV, we almost always do std rooms, barring a last minute emergency booking (flight delay, etcetera). The pool/garden is fine but not that much nicer than std. I may actually even prefer std at BWV!!

I can't really comment on standard view rooms at BLT because I've never had one. But from what I understand, standard view is from the ground floor up to maybe the fourth floor? Or fifth? Because you don't really see much from your deck....but the rooms are the same. I do know they reclassified rooms that were previously theme park because people were not happy that they really could not "see" MK...just the parking lot and the monorail. From what I can see, the lower floors are close to the "smoking permitted areas", are ground floor, are the first 5 floors that face the parking lot or views that face Bay Lake and are blocked by trees. But then again, if you have a one bedroom, you have two full baths and a sleeper chair in the living room!

Regarding BWV....if I could not get a BW view, I would not use the same amount of points for a pool/garden view. Pools are noisy and that view gets the evening sun that can be a killer. Also, many of those views are blocked by trees!!!! I would not be happy to pay that amount of points to look at a tree. But.....when getting the same sized room for a standard view, you can sometimes really luck out with the tennis court view (although a very long hike from the elevator....but at least you can breathe on your deck...sometimes, there are trees there too) or can be lucky enough to get one of the few rooms that face the driveway that are not blocked by trees. But a very good point bargain.

Either way...I hope you get to use all your points...but don't give yourself an ulcer for losing a few. It happens to all of us now and then. Dust yourself off and move on to your next reservation. Seems like I am always planning the next trip!
