We're new DVC owners buying in at GCV.
Looking at buying an AP for DL but was shocked at the paltry $20 discount compared to a much bigger discount at DW.
Has this always been the case?
$20 is hardly an incentive.

Apparently, DL doesn't feel they need to offer much of an admission discount to DVC Members. DL has far more passholders than WDW does and on any given day, there are more passholders inside of the CA parks than there are regular ticket holders. So, I don't think DL really wants anymore passholders.

I hope you aren't letting things like member perks play any role in your DVC purchase decisions. Perks come and perks go. Tomorrow (or next week, or next year) that WDW AP discount could disappear entirely.

Buy DVC as a vehicle for saving money on your lodging...not for perks or pixie dust.

With only 48 DVC rooms, I don't think DL feels the need. Members do get the 10% food and merchandise discount pretty much everywhere, same as AP.

No we're thrilled to be DVC owners and the perks have no bearing on that, I just thought the difference offered between the two parks discount wise was quite large.

You are correct. It hardly seems like it could be that different but it is.

I expect that a large majority of DVC members buying APs for DLR are purchasing California resident APs and Disney decided that offering a large discount for DVC members would discourage people from buying the local's AP, which is pretty expensive. People already showed that they will come to DLR with ticket pricing before the small number of DVC rooms were added so I expect that is a factor as well. It is just a token discount. And like others have said discounts come and go, it's best not to depend on the discounts when buying into DVC.

It wasn't all that long ago that Disney increased the annual pass price for DL by a substantial amount. The thinking at that time was that Disney actually wanted to REDUCE the number of passholders for DL because they wanted space for more day visitors who are quite a bit more profitable for them. Assuming that's true, it's very understandable that they wouldn't be offering much of a discount on them for DVC members.

I think they offered a $70 discount during the promo period last year.

They did. I bought them at that time and activated them this past December, after another increase - saved a ton across 4 APs. I am watching and hoping I will get a chance to do that again...

Yeah, my take on it is Disney actually feels they have too many passholders in California. That's why they've jacked prices up substantially in the last few years, and gotten rid of some of the different AP levels.

Kind of nice that you have a business model that allows you to do all you can to get rid of regular visitors and yet they won't go. "These damn people just won't stop buying tickets!"
