Update for week of June 14. I've bolded the most important one, still only late night. There are a lot of ramp closures happening to place barriers at various exits, also at night. Permanent closures of some ramps will begin to add stress to rush hours.

Update for week of June 21:

Continued overnight intermittent lane closures North of Orlando and south to Kirkman. Generally starting 10 or 11pm and ending 5am or as late as 7am.

No daytime closure... yet.

I guess it is safe to suggest that if you are driving south to WDW over the next week or so, I4 is still the fastest way to go? Versus 417.

At any given time I-4 can be a problem ... with or without the construction. I highly recommend you check traffic if you can as you start down I-4 from Daytona. If you see "red" or a lot of "yellow" on a traffic map, take FL 417 around instead.

Just an update from someone that drives from the Universal area up to maitland every day along I-4. Eastbound (away from Disney toward Daytona) construction is starting to affect it, not so much the other direction yet.

Mainly downtown Orlando, they have closed an exit ramp and shifted lanes (with barricades) near there which is causing traffic problems. (Ivanhoe Exit 84 offramp is permanently closed in the eastbound direction, onramps and the westbound offramp are still open)

The second area is around Kirkman Rd, which used to have signage for Universal, now they are using the Universal Blvd exit for Universal (and removed all references to Universal from the Kirkman exit) Which is good since Kirkman Rd. is a mess with construction now. If you are heading up from Disney you avoid this by exiting at the Universal Blvd exit just after Sand Lake. If you are heading from downtown/daytona, you ramp off and go past Cabana Bay, and turn right to get into Universal.

So really the worst areas for traffic related to construction right now are north side of downtown (eastbound) and near Kirkman Rd.

We are driving down from the Midwest at the end of July. We made the trip once before but it was 5 years ago so I don't remember specifics. Google directions is taking us from Floridas Turnpike to I-4, and then south around the east side of WDW, because we are staying at POR. Would this construction affect that? Is there a better route to take? It seems like our last trip, we came in on the west side of WDW, maybe on 429 I think (?), and went around but on the map this looks longer. Any suggestions......we are completely unfamiliar with this area!

halssister - your route does take you into the lower end of the construction zone, and depending on time of day, you can get slowdowns and stop and go traffic on I-4 all the way to WDW... or not. Your alternative is to exit earlier to FL 429 south, then take exit 8 to the "Western Way" into WDW. Take a look at Google Maps, should be clear and rarely are there any traffic issues this way.

Update for week of June 28
Worst impact is intermittent lane closures on I-4 during evening and night hours.

Important Notice
The South Street on-ramp to eastbound I-4 is scheduled to close permanently the night of Tuesday, July 7. Parking lot 9 South in downtown Orlando, between Church and Pine streets, is also scheduled to close the night of July 7 (more info).

Alternate routes for the South Street on-ramp include the eastbound I-4 entrance ramps at Anderson Street and near the intersection of Garland Avenue and Concord Street.

In addition, Grand National Drive from Fun Spot Way to West Oak Ridge Road (more info) is closing long term beginning Monday, July 6, to allow for construction of a new I-4 overpass with Express Lane direct access. A detour is established for this two-year closure.

I appreciate you keeping this updated! I'm driving in from SC on Saturday. We are hitting Universal first then moving over to Disney Sunday afternoon. We will be coming I-95 to I-4. We plan on leaving our house around 2am which will put us at Universal around 8:30am. Any suggestions? I think we will be fine with the normal route but would like your input. Thanks!

I think the lane closures will be done by the time you hit the area (and it's not a weekday or I would warn about rush hour)... so just the usual advice... If you have a smartphone or traffic enabled GPS then check the I-4 status through Orlando and past Kirkman and Sand Lake. If it's red, or even yellow, then spend the $6 and take the FL 417 toll road bypassing Orlando to the east. If I-4 is green, then go ahead through downtown! Have a nice drive!
