Welcome Kim!! Glad to have you along!

It was a freakishly busy day at my office today, and I didn't get a chance to finish my customary lunchtime entry as I had planned. But its coming soon....I promise!

I'm really enjoying your trip report! We'll be visiting Universal on our next trip so I'm learning a lot from you. Sunday, May 3rd: the end of our day.

It seemed I had hardly spent any time at all poking around the Despicable Me gift shop when I saw Steve walking in the store. Unless time really got away from me, there was no way he could have gone through the queue, rode the coaster, and met me in the store this soon. Perhaps the stand-by time had increased dramatically, and he was opting to wait until after 4 pm (when he could ride with his Express)?

Nope. He wouldn’t fit .

Now, this was a huge disappointment after he had lost so much weight since the beginning of the calendar year. And even more disappointing? It was his chest and shoulders that were too broad for the restraints, not a weight issue…..and there’s precious little he can do about having shoulders as wide as a football player. Even if he loses more weight before our next trip, his bone structure will still be the same. I knew he was disappointed…..he had waited three years since our first Universal trip to finally give it a go…..but alas, what can you do? :(

Since we were in the general vicinity, we opted to ride Shrek again. Nothing like a little bit of Donkey’s antics to lift a person’s spirits :).

Then, after the ride, we got to meet Shrek and Donkey at the character spot outside the ride. Donkey was quite a naughty mule…..let’s just say he was gassy and leave it at that :scared: :rotfl:…..and it was well worth the short wait in line. Unfortunately, Fiona wasn’t there, nor did we get a chance to meet her over the course of the entire week, though we did see her coming and going via a backstage access point on at least three separate occasions. Just bad timing on our part.

By the time we finished up with our Shrek meet and greet, we were starting to grow weary. It had been a long, busy day and we were starting to feel the effects. Perhaps a good dinner was just what the doctor ordered. So we made the short walk over to New York again, and checked in at the podium at Finnegan’s Irish Pub.

There was no wait for a table (in fact, it wasn’t really that busy at all) so we were seated immediately. We had the most incredible server, Marian, who promptly arrived to secure our beverage order and leave us with menus to decide on our entrees. A few minutes later, our soft drinks appeared (all deliciously cold and refreshing....I was desperately in need for some rehydration!) and she took the balance of our order. Within a few minutes, she was back with a smile with a complimentary loaf of Irish soda bread.

Along with the bread was regular butter and their house-made apple butter, the latter which Steve absolutely adored. The soda bread was really great, and made for a nice snack as we enjoyed the atmosphere. There was a singer/guitarist on the opposite side of the restaurant from where we were sitting (nearer to the bar), and he was really, really good. It was just a very welcoming, relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere all the way around. We felt very comfortable, if that makes sense. I will note that Steve was not exactly over-eager about my choice of dinner locations (he wasn’t opposed, of course….but it was not one of his must-do’s) and he was quick to remark about the excellent first impressions being cast by the establishment and service as a whole.

It wasn’t long at all before Marian whisked our entrees out from the kitchen. I had the “Newcastle Chicken”: a grilled chicken breast topped with peppercorn butter and served with homemade garlic mashed potatoes and root cellar vegetables (minus the root cellar veggies on my request).

(lol, you can even see the tiredness in my eyes here….I was really feeling rather droopy by this point in the day)

Steve opted for the “Misty Isle Mixed Grill”: country sausage and breast of chicken grilled with apple-smoked bacon served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and root cellar vegetables. He substituted a side salad, though, for the mashed potatoes (probably knowing he would get the chance to help me finish mine!!).

I have to say….we LOVED this meal ! The food was super fresh, wonderfully flavourful and completely delicious. The service was spectacular (a big shout out to Marian, she was one of the best servers of our entire trip…..we enjoyed some wonderful conversation with her throughout our meal and she shared some interesting tidbits on the park that were really quite captivating to hear about), and as I’ve already said, we loved the “feel” of the place. The portions were perfect…..nicely satisfying enough for Steve (who has a healthy appetite), and just a tad too much for me (with enough left over for Steve to polish off) without copious amounts of waste. The peppercorn butter on the chicken was sinful……and the perfect touch to a very nicely marinated piece of meat.

I would have loved to have indulged in some dessert, but while the mind was willing, the stomach was not. Sufficiently satisfied (and a modicum of energy restored) we paid the bill ($26 tax included and our AP discount applied, tip additional....a STEAL, considering the quality of the meal. It was virtually the same price as our quick service lunch at Simpson’s Fast Food Boulevard!) and rolled ourselves out the door.

Steve’s first comments: “We’re coming back here on our next trip. That was freaking awesome”.

We toyed with our options as to what to do from there. Our desire to keep touring was waning....even after a robust meal, we were pooped. We headed around toward Hollywood:

...and caught another ride on ET. Then that was it. We were done in. :faint:

Well, almost.

As we strolled through Hollywood to the park entrance, a TM was inviting folks in for a magic show that would be starting within a few minutes. We figured we’d squeeze one final thing in before we left, since we were right here anyway. And as a general rule, we do enjoy a good magic performance.

It was a tiny seating area inside that didn’t hold many guests, but it made for a quaint an intimate performance by the young magician. He performed a little mini show about 10-15 minutes long where he quite capably kept our rapt attention, talking non-stop the entire time he worked his magic. At the end of his performance, the DVD and accessory kits used during his show were promoted for sale (I guess when there’s no official gift shop next to an attraction, this is the next best option) and a surprising number of people approached him to purchase them. We took our leave and headed out to the park entrance, through Citywalk, and then on to the car. As we stood wearily on the moving walkway, I seriously thought my legs might disintegrate out from under me. The hot tubs were going to feel mighty good later that evening!

Back at the resort, before heading to the pool, I pulled the SD card out of the dysfunctional camera to see if the pics I had taken earlier in the day were viewable on the small camera (since they take the same size card). I could see them in the review setting, but couldn’t seem to add any additional new photos when a picture was snapped with the camera. I knew the 32 GB card was nowhere near full, so I popped it into the laptop to see if I could download the photos to the computer.

Nothin’. My card was corrupt :sad2: .

A small bout of panic ensued....there were photos on that card (character meets, Clogger burger, etc.) that would be hard to duplicate again this trip. I settled in for a quick google search on what I could do next, and found multiple recommendations for a downloadable software designed exactly for situations like mine. The problem? It was $49.95 US (so add another 25% for conversion and exchange). And I had no guarantee it would actually work. I discussed it with Steve, who without hesitation said give it a try. His philosophy was that the only thing we had to lose was fifty bucks or so, and if it worked, we’d think it was a genius move. If it didn’t, at least we tried. So....I purchased and installed the software, restarted the computer, followed the directions and......in less than 10 minutes, I had over 110 recovered files of our favourite moments at Universal Studios.

So relieved. :woohoo:

Pool and hot tub time rounded out our night. We had chatted earlier with Jake and my mom via phone (she had taken him out for lunch, he took her shopping all afternoon, then he treated them to dinner .... and they were enjoying a rambunctious evening of laughter together when we called them upon our return to the villa) so the rest of the night was ours to enjoy.

A good soak in the hot tub did wonders for our aching legs, and by the time we hit the sack, we slept like babies.

A full day of Islands of Adventure was on deck for Monday!

I'm really enjoying your trip report! We'll be visiting Universal on our next trip so I'm learning a lot from you. We will also be flying JetBlue out of Syracuse and have been researching hotels at the airport there, so I'm very happy to hear that you had such a positive experience with your hotel and the 'park and fly' option.

Welcome, HumblePie! Glad to have you along as well! When is your trip?

We've had good experiences in the past with both the Holiday Inn Express Syracuse Airport and their sister property across the parking lot, the Candlewood Suites. We still have to try the Best Western at the airport....we just have never been able to find favourable rates there.

We love flying from Syracuse....its such a small, easy to navigate little airport.

Thanks for the info! I have friends who recently stayed at the Best Western and their review was not great. And it does not have a pool, which I think the kids would really enjoy to blow off some steam after the drive. So I think the Holiday Inn Express might be our solution based on your experience. Our trip is in January - still so long to wait! But I enjoy the planning process, thankfully!

Ah, escaping the Western New York winter for a week sounds perfect to me! It will be here before you know it :) .

If a pool is a must, then cross the Candlewood off your list. I do think the BW has a pool, but its outdoor so only open seasonally.

That's so disappointing that he didn't fit - and all because of his build! :( :(

Finnegan's sounds really good :) And you reminded me - I think we completely forgot to use our Amex discount at a couple of our meals. *sigh* it didn't qualify for stuff like the Dining Plan so I kept forgetting about it.

We saw the magic show thing, but didn't take the time to stop. Maybe in a future trip. I'll keep in mind that it's a standing thing though. It weird - we go on 2-3 hour hikes quite a few times a year...heck, I've done a 5 hour hike...but walking in the parks is always exhausting.

Glad the camera fix thing worked for you! $50 is a lot, but worth it to preserve those memories :)

I'm surprised he didn't fit. Bummer.

Love Finnegans. I agree on the service. I had some salad there that was so good, Celtic Chicken Salad I think.

Gina......I saw you at the Vistana...you were wearing a bright orange shirt and had come in through the super pool gate, and I am guessing went in to Zimmies to take some photos because you had your camera around your neck!! I was hanging out at the pool, and was going to shout out to you but figured you would say.....UUUmmmmm who is this strange person shouting my name and I do not know!! Just wanted to let you know that I saw you...I even said to my friend....Ah, I think that is Gina Gina Bo Bina, she looked at me like I was from Mars!! LOL!!

Actually, no one stood at the magic show....there were seats for all. Just not very many seats.....maybe 20-30 people could be accommodated, tops? And it was reasonably close quarters.

I always figure touring the parks is so hard on the body because you're mogging around on pavement all day, which is more taxing to the legs. That's my theory, but only a guess!

I was amazed at the pricing there, too. Very reasonable for a theme park. Made me wonder why the place wasn't packed.

Yep....that was me!!! You totally should have shouted out to me, that would have been so awesome to meet you! :goodvibes

That would have been Tuesday, our Orlando Eye day. After riding the Eye, we spent a little time at the resort, and we wanted to see what Zimmie's looked like now that the renovations are done (its beautiful!!). We also wanted to see how far they had home with the re-installation of the slide at the Falls pool.

Gina I'm enjoying reading your TR you have a great style of writing! I love the pictures I keep showing the hubby the fun things we will get to do. I'm taking lots of notes! I wanted to ask you about the lockers we've never been to Uni and the lockers are new to us, do most of the rides have lockers by them? Do they charge you every time you use them or is there no charge? You and Steve are a cute couple! I'm glad to hear you had such nice weather, I work at the schools so we usually go in August and you know how that can be. I was surprised to see how spacious the 1 bdrm was at the Vistana it looks like such a nice place. Linda :)

Hi Linda! Good to have you reading along!

The lockers are free for a designated period of time....Gringotts, for example, gives you 60 minutes. There are small screens at each locker location that walk you through the process....basically, it scans your finger, then designates you a locker. When you go to retrieve your belongings, your fingerprint authorizes the locker to open. We thought it was a marvelous system that worked very well.

Oh heavens, yes.....the wonderful heat and humidity of August :crazy2: . We have enjoyed three amazing August trips though, despite the stifling summer temps. I am almost kind of sad that we're not planning a late August trip this year......it seems weird to be thinking forward to autumn!!

We were fortunate and received a one bedroom premium villa. The standard one bedrooms are only half that size. Had we traveled during a busier season, I'm not so sure we would have been so lucky.

Monday, May 4th: part 1

Today was planned for Islands of Adventure, so we were up early to grab showers and a quick breakfast at the villa before heading out the door, Tim Hortons travel mugs in hand. Our goal was to be parked and at the gates in time for rope drop again, and we succeeded nicely. For another successive morning, Mother Nature had provided us a spectacular warm, sunshiny, breezy day with no humidity .... and we could easily see how Florida earned the nickname "The Sunshine State".

While Universal Studios is my park of choice, Islands of Adventure is Steve’s easy preference of the two. Marvel Super Hero Island alone would make this his clear favourite, and Jurassic Park just puts it well over the top. All the other sections are just a bonus where’s he’s concerned! So while most of the guests veered to the right to make a beeline for Hogsmeade, we opted to head left instead.

I must say, I find Port of Entry so striking that it’s almost hard to keep my feet moving when we enter. I just want to stop and stare at all the beautiful architecture and little details....the theming here is so well done.

And this view across the water is just spectacular:

We had a few minutes to wait at the bridge by the Hulk before the TM’s granted the small crowd access at exactly 9 am. 90% of those folks headed straight to Hulk, so Steve opted to ride Spiderman first instead.

I was tempted to give Spiderman a try (and I still might in October), but erring on the side of caution (it was first thing in the morning, after all) I figured it was best to let Steve enjoy this one on his own. It was a walk-on at that time of the day, so I knew he wouldn’t be very long anyway. While he rode, I got my morning smile from the small family of ducks who appeared out of nowhere at the first sound of the churro stand worker opening the kiosk for the morning. As they quacked their greeting, he produced a couple of day-old churros which he broke into bite sized pieces and scattered them on the ground for his little friends to enjoy. Judging by their well-organized enthusiasm and the smiles of the churro TM, I am guessing this is a daily ritual which both sides enjoy immensely.

Not long after the ducks waddled their way back to toward the water, Steve emerged from Spiderman with a thumbs up.

He was now ready to tackle his favourite coaster at Universal :).

While I honestly don’t know how people endure these kinds of rides and live to tell the story (I seriously would have a heart attack before we ever made it through the first loop......perhaps before the car even left the loading area!!) I am glad it brings other visitors so much joy. Steve dashed off to the queue like a little boy heading downstairs on December 25th to see what Santa left him under the Christmas tree. I happily held his hat, wallet, and keys while I enjoyed the view of the riders from a nearby bench.

While it wasn’t a walk-on, his wait was only about 5 minutes. He emerged, all smiles and invigorated, ready to take on the world. Me, I was feeling kind of queasy just watching from the ground! :scared:

He did note, though, that at some point during his ride on the coaster, one of the clasps on his new Simpsons lanyard had broken apart. Very fortunately, the pouch that held his annual pass fell just the right way to wedge itself in the restraint, so by a sheer miracle, he still had both pieces. We cobbled it as best we could and opted to keep touring until we could purchase a replacement at one of the gift shops.

With the emergency repair successfully applied to the lanyard, we were happy to find out that Spiderman had arrived at his meet-and-greet location and was ready to have his photo taken with visitors. There was only a couple with a very awe-struck little boy in front of us, so we didn’t have long to wait for this little moment of awesomeness:

You can just see the delight on Steve’s face here, and I could totally relate. The Super Heroes bring out Steve’s inner child like the Minions bring out mine!

Spidey was a lot of fun, too....very engaging, and he chatted us up quite a bit. The first question from every character and TM is generally “so, where are you from?” and replying with “Canada” always yields at least a short discussion about the weather.....at least to start ::yes:: .

After our visit with Spiderman, we stopped and browsed for a bit in the various shops. Steve could have spent all day doing that alone.

Eventually, we made our way from the Marvel area to Toon Lagoon.

A very cool area, that Toon Lagoon. Makes me feel like I’ve been hit on the head and woke up in the middle of the comics section of the Sunday paper.

As we came upon Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, Steve decided it was a good time to get wet. Being drop-averse, this was no ride for moi (nor did I feel any burning desire to be damp for the next hour) so I was happy to hold his hat and wallet while he enjoyed a good soaking.

As he headed off to the queue, I enjoyed a wonderful chat with the TM who was working one of the merchandise kiosks by the bridge. During the course of that conversation, I happened to mention that we needed to seek out a gift shop to purchase a new Simpsons lanyard for Steve as his didn’t survive the morning’s ride on the Hulk, and she told us that Universal would replace it for free. She even directed us to a kiosk not far from the Marvel area, mentioning that TM by name and explaining that she would happy to assist us. I was totally surprised....that’s not something we expected at all! Colour me impressed, indeed :goodvibes.

The queue on Dudley Do-Rights is fairly long, so it took a little bit of time before Steve finally swooshed down into the big splash-down.

He emerged a short time later, soaked from top to bottom. He wouldn’t be fussing about being hot anytime soon :rotfl2:.

I filled him in about the good news on his lanyard, and we agreed to seek out the recommended kiosk when we were back near the front of the park. For now, we trundled on......Jurassic Park was calling our name!

Gina!!! I'm reading along and will comment more later but I had to tell you that I have a picture of that same mama duck with her babies in that same spot. I didn't realize they came out for the Churros lol!!! However, my pictures are from March 18th or 19th so those babies are looking much bigger in your photo. :goodvibes

Great start to the day at Universal. I like the pictures you are getting at universal, some of the backgrounds are really good. I see in the picture of the Hulk ride that while Steve is taking it in his stride the man in the middle s a bit more excited!!

Hey my friend, good to see you back!! You were missed :) .

Aw, those little babies must have been soooo tiny then and even cuter than they are now. I can see why they've grown so much in two months, though.....a steady diet of churros is the culprit, lol!

It was funny....initially I had my back to that area, taking some photos of the Spiderman ride building. I heard them before I saw them, and it was all their quacking that made me turn around to look. They were definitely making every effort to announce their arrival to the churro man :rotfl2: .

When they were done their little snack, they tried to follow him back behind the counter. He had quite a task to shoo them away before they completely took over his stand :rotfl: .

lol, isn't that guy in the centre hilarious? His expression made us laugh right out loud!

Monday, May 4th: part 2

Jurassic Park (all of the movies) hold a special place in my heart. When Jake was a little fella, he was obsessed with dinosaurs: he devoured every book he could find, collected every figurine and toy sold in stores, and watched every documentary that happened to be aired on TV. He could replicate their sounds and tell you what each of them ate. Jurassic Park III was the first movie he ever went to the theatre to see, at the tender age of 5 (he had long since watched our VHS copies of the first two movies so many times, I am surprised the tapes survived his childhood). I can’t tell you how many rainy days were spent, curled up on the sofa under a blanket that my mom had knitted us, watching one of the Jurassic Park movies for the umpteenth time.

So yeah, I love Jurassic Park. It stands for many happy Momma memories for me. And I love the “feel” of this part of the park.

Steve was already wet from his ride on Dudley Do-Right’s, so it made sense for him to ride Jurassic Park River Adventure while his undies were still soggy :rolleyes2.

Posted waits were only 5 minutes :woohoo:, so off he went. I seized the opportunity for a quick washroom break, and came back to the soak zone with literally a minute to spare before he came crashing down in a big splash:

He emerged a few minutes later, sopping wet(ter) but smiling broadly and oozing about how much he loves that ride. Since I hadn’t yet had the chance to explore around the area with camera in hand, and the wait was still at 5 minutes, I encouraged him to re-ride it while we were here and he had the opportunity. He jumped at the chance, and dashed off for round 2. Once again, he was back before I even had chance to miss him, ready to move on to the next attraction. We got a few photos as we headed to the Jurassic Park Discovery Center.

This one was a Photoconnect pic, but taken via an automated, timed camera (where you scan your card, a countdown timer starts, you go stand on the designated spot marked on the ground, then the camera snaps your pic). It’s the only photo opportunity of that type that we saw throughout both parks....not sure if there are more, or if this is the only one.

The Discovery Center was one of the attractions we didn’t get a chance to explore on our first visit to IOA in January 2012, so this was “all new” for us.

As we toured around, I couldn’t help but think that Jake would have enjoyed seeing this. (And yes, he and Steve are eagerly waiting for the release of Jurassic World later this summer.....they will be there on opening night for sure ::yes::).

Steve and I both played the game show “You Bet Jurassic” versus another guest. I won  (I can thank Jake for that one, he taught me all he knew!).

Following our exploration of the Discovery Center, we were starting to get rather hungry (breakfast had been quite early that morning, and not too terribly heavy). So we continued from Jurassic Park on to Hosgmeade, as the plan was to try out Three Broomsticks for lunch.

Arriving in Hogsmeade, we decided to stroll around a bit and take in some of the sights before we ate. It was fairly busy, but not crazy.

We browsed in Honeydukes:

....and we met the Hogwarts Express conductor (who was simply adorable, by the way....what a friendly chap):

We took the obligatory photos in front of the castle:

....and then decided it was time to eat. Our lunch and review of Three Broomsticks is next.

Monday, May 4th: part 3

Despite the reasonably brisk foot traffic outside, Three Broomsticks wasn’t super busy, and we were directed by a greeter right up to a waiting TM to place our order. Thankfully, we were able to take a few moments to peruse the menu without holding anyone up, as it was hard to decide from all their awesome choices. Steve had his eye on the Great Feast until I showed him where it said it served 4 (dang it!) ... so he opted for the chicken and ribs platter with corn on the cob and roast potatoes ($14.99):

(For some reason, you can’t see the chicken in this pic....but it was there....must have been just the angle I took the photo from. You’ll have to trust me on that!)

I ordered the rotisserie smoked chicken platter, which also came with corn on the cob and roast potatoes:

Both of us chose a cold Butterbeer to drink ($4.99 each).

By the time we paid the bill for our meal ($31.92 including tax and our AP discount), our lunches had appeared (scary fast!) and we carried our tray to one of the many available tables.

We settled on a nice, quiet spot near the back, next to the fire place. Perfect!

We really, really enjoyed our experience here. The food was super tasty (the meat was flavourful and tender), all items were nice and hot, the portion sizes were generous, and the value for price paid was excellent. The corn on the cob, which I had expected to be disappointing (since when do you normally get good corn on the cob at a quick service place?) was absolutely delish. The TM’s were friendly, efficient, and very well organized....and we commented more than once on how they all seemed to sincerely enjoy their jobs and serving guests. The restaurant itself was very clean, and the ambiance was super cool. Everything impressed us.......it was definitely a winner!

Our only regret? We were too full for dessert! (or at least, for now ;))

What a great trip, seems like mostly everything went so smoothly. I'm glad Steve got on hulk after the RRR issue. Spider-Man is a fav of mine, but it took a slight back seat to transformers. With just a month until we go, Im loving reading how much fun you had. Trying to keep up this weekend but we are away.
