Day 10 - US, Last Day!!! Key Largo, Universal and MK in one wonderful just about perfect trip

The parade was over and Wishes would start soon (in about 30 minutes). We found a spot, nothing spectacular but decent and waited for it to begin. Now I've seen Wishes from way down the end of Main on our way out, and from the Ferry and once from the beach at Ft. Wilderness after dinner at HDDR but never from a decent central spot in the hub. The Wishes viewing area looked nice but not sure I'd use a FP for it! We had a semi angled view from the Tomorrowland side of the hub. While I enjoyed the projection show, I have to say I really don't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to the fireworks. We can see fireworks any Wednesday or Saturday night from a beach less than an hour from home and the Boston 4th of July fireworks are truly spectacular so I guess we're just not that overwhelmed by the MK show.

After Wishes ended, we went back to Fantasyland to see how long the wait was for 7DMT. The sign said 70 minutes but we could easily tell from the lack of people in the outside queue that it was a much shorter wait than that. I timed our wait just to see and we waited 12 minutes. We enjoyed the ride at night and this time the people in the car with us helped us get it rocking! Not sure if I mentioned the lack of assistance in rocking the car on our previous ride??? What fun! I really wish they had made this one longer, or put in another track so the wait would be less. I wanted to get right back in line and ride again but Boo wanted to check out the wait for PP. The sign said 20 minutes but this time we waited at least 30! After PP we wanted to ride Mermaid as we had skipped that one last year in Disneyland.

After Mermaid we debated Space again or BTMRR. Well BTMRR got my vote so we headed over there after checking the app and seeing a 20 minute wait. It was just about midnight when we go over there. Unfortunately, it was closed for technical issues!!! Such a bummer. We had been looking forward to riding it in the dark. At least we had gotten 4 rides earlier that day so while it was a disappointment, it wasn't the end of the world! We decided to go on Splash since we were in the neighborhood. We were the only ones on Splash. Not just the only ones in our boat but the only ones in any boat. There were empty boats in front of and behind us and not one other non CM to be seen. It was a bit creepy really. We ended up at the hub debating if we wanted to dash over to Space for one last ride but when I checked the app, it was also showing closed. Now I wonder if regularly scheduled nightly maintenance had not been notified that the park was staying open that extra hour? It seemed weird to me that both BTMRR and Space would be down suddenly during that last hour. It was 12:50am and we had had enough! We took our time walking out, stopping to buy some candy and water.

We arrived at the monorail just as one was pulling in - perfect timing again. There were very few people taking the monorail - it was an easy trip to the TTC and the car was right there waiting. We were back at our hotel by 1:45am. We stumbled into bed and I just barely remembered that i had to set the alarm! 2DT was driving in from St. Pete in the morning and we were planning to hit US early since it was another grad night and was closing at 5pm.

We had a great day at MK and I really loved our time there. So much so that we are planning to return for a 4 day WDW only, non Universal, trip the first weekend in December. The one day at MK was expensive but it is the one WDW park where you really get your money's worth. We had spent a staggering 12 hours in the park that day. We'd had 3 meals, met 4 characters, ridden 9 mountains plus been on POTC, HM, Buzz, PM, Mermaid, IASW and PP, I'd taken over 200 photos and we'd spent less than an hour in stand by lines and 0 time waiting for transportation! It was a just about perfect day!

Next up - our crazy Universal ride pics!

Wow...what an amazing MK day you had!! Makes me exhausted just reading about it lol!! But it's great that you managed to do it all with so little waiting! I love those castle photos you got too...awesome.

Just thought I would stop in quickly and let you know that your descriptions of your MK day made me feel like I was actually there! We love BTMMR too! Could do it over and over and over again! Bummer that you couldn't get on at night, but you sounded very philosophical about it! Good for you!

The only thing I disagree with you about is Wishes! For me, that evening spectacular gets me every time! But I agree, if you are just looking at the fireworks themselves as the attraction, there are other ones out there that are just as good or better. What it is for me is the MUSIC that accompanies the fireworks! I am a music lover, and to hear all the songs from the Disney movies from when my sons grew up --- well, let's just say I look like this > when the music is playing! I even play the soundtrack from YouTube or from the CD I bought about 10 years ago if I am feeling the need for a Disney fix! :upsidedow It has segments from my older son's favourite sound track from the Hercules movie - Go the Distance! The words from that song are inspiring to me right to this day.....I get goose bumps just thinking about it!......

Anyway, thought I would just cruise on by :car: and tell you to keep up the good work! Sorry to hear you and Boo were under the weather, but you are doing an awesome job with this TR. :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the next installment! And more pictures! The very first post I saw of yours I remember thinking how great a photographer you are, and all of them in this TR are top notch! :cheer2::cheer2:

:beach::beach::beach:Caught up through your trip to the Keys. My husband and I spent our 10th anniversary in Key West, but we haven't been to any of the other Keys and the kids have never been. There really does seem to be a lot that would hold our interest there!

Bubba Gumps is one of our family favorites, too, although we have only been to the one in City Walk.

What an amazing encounter at the beach at Hampton Inn. I also love your beach pictures. The one with the kayaks has such beautiful color.

Gorgeous sunsets!!! The colors created by the setting sun have to be one of the best "free" shows on vacation.

I'm glad you had such a great time at the Dolphin place. Really super pictures and memories from that day. The one with Boo and the fin swim is my favorite.

The restaurants you found all sound super (love the view at the Sunset Grill)

That is quite an endorsement for Hondo Beach.

ITA about coconut ice cream!!! My favorite flavor. Many years ago (like 18 or 20) we went all over Aruba trying to find coconut ice cream and we were so disappointed when we were not able to find any. At least now the flavor is getting popular and available.

As you know, I loved your review and pictures from the snorkeling tour!!!!!!

Both of the other families were also from Massachusetts but they were from Western Mass which is really not the same state that we live in (lol).
I know exactly what you mean.

:lmao:

The pictures are taken with our underwater Kodak PlaySport which is really a video camera that can be set to take stills but that's not it's true purpose so it's not the easiest to use in that way. When we return to Hawaii, I'll have to find something better for Boo to use. She fancies herself quite the underwater explorer since spotting the ray and the lobster. She even dove down a few times to get a bit closer for her pics.

I'll put in a plug for the Fuji XP. I have been using underwater point & shoot cameras almost exclusively for all of my photos since 2009. I have had 3 Olympus Toughs, a Canon Powershot D10, a Lumix that I loved (until it died in Hawaii) and I now own two of the Fuji XPs (I have had these for 2 or 3 years). They are currently around $179 at Sam's Club, but I purchased both of mine when they were on sale for around $130. Very easy to use, lots of settings and they take pretty decent pictures.

Looking forward to starting to read the Orlando part of your trip!

:goodvibes:

It has segments from my older son's favourite sound track from the Hercules movie - Go the Distance!

OMG, when my nephew was little (3 or 4 I think) he LOVED Hercules. I took him to see either Hercules on Ice or Disney on Ice and Hercules was in it. I can still see his happy little face watching the show (he's 20 now)! Thanks for bringing back a great memory that I had totally forgotten about.

The very first post I saw of yours I remember thinking how great a photographer you are, and all of them in this TR are top notch!

That is so nice of you to say, thank you! You are much too kind.

That is quite an endorsement for Hondo Beach.

It really was gorgeous. No waves at all and crystal crystal clear. Probably a bit boring for teenagers but for little ones or kayaking/SUPing, perfect.

When we were in Maui we went to Paiai and had dinner at the Flatbread Pizza there - they were serving Leilani's coconut ice cream on a warm fudge brownie with caramel sauce. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Now, whenever I see it on a menu I have to have it. If you're familiar with Richardson's in Middleton MA they now have coconut ice cream, just had some the other day!

Thanks for the tip - I'll definitely keep an eye out for a sale on one of these. My nephew had a Tough and loved it but id didn't last very long - it seems that none of them do.

We never made it to Paia. We really wanted to go to Flatbread- The one in my town is the oldest in the chain (it started in Vermont, but that restaurant is no longer there). They have fabulous food and are a really great community partner. Every Tuesday they have a fundraiser at their place for local charitable organizations. They have a warm brownie with Annabel's ice cream here, but that version sounds AMAZING!!!

Ok it's 7am and I'm craving a pizza from Flatbreads. Not great for my diet but I guess I know what we'll be doing after the beach today!

Day 8/Saturday/US and IOA/Finnegans/Hard Rock Cafe

The alarm was jarring and necessary after our long day/night at MK. I had spoken to 2DT during our break the previous day and she was expected about 8:30am. I'd asked her to give us a call when she was 20 minutes out so we could be sure to be ready to go. Neither Boo nor I were all that interested in doing early entry and we would have preferred to sleep in but we didn't want to disappoint 2DT and with the park scheduled to close at 6 for grad night we wanted to get a full day in so we all agreed to a 9am start.

In my PTR I had mentioned that there was a family we know from our town who would also be at RPR for the same nights as us. I hadn't told Boo because it was a surprise for their kids and she's not great at keeping secrets. Their daughter is one of Boo's classmates and we know them fairly well from school, church and girl scouts. They had never been to Universal before, they usually go to WDW every year but were looking for a change. They had arrived the previous day and gone to US (they didn't have hoppers) so they were going to IOA that day. We planned to go to US in the morning then hop over to IOA for some water rides when it got hot. We decided it might be too difficult to try to meet up in the parks so we made plans to meet for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. L (the mom) was able to get a priority reservation for 620pm.

2DT called at 8 to advise she would be there in 20. I was already up and ready to go. I woke Boo who is an absolute gem when she hasn't had enough sleep . I dangled the ultimate carrot, Cinnabon for breakfast, and that got her at least moving. Boo and 2DT are addicted to Cinnabon. After a quick shower she was almost ready to smile. 2DT arrived and was very impressed with our renovated room. After dropping her stuff, she was raring to go. We took the shortcut stairs to ground level and easily found the walking path to City Walk.

I went to Starbucks to get a blueberry muffin and the Cinnabon Club had their first meeting of 2015. Boo got her usual giant bun covered in frosting, 2DT likes the smaller ones.

When we got to US, the first thing I did was go into the photo shop by the entrance and order the 3 day photo connect package. I know it's about $10 cheaper to order the package online but I hadn't decided to do it until that morning and was just too tired to try to order it from my tablet or phone. I did ask if they offered the American Express discount and while they did not, paying for the package with my Amex did get me a 3rd photo print instead of the usual 2 that come with the package. I had them give me 4 cards, one of each of us and one that I would give to L when I saw her. I figured they may as well get their pics too and it wouldn't cost me anything additional. I didn't bring my dslr with me this day because I had lugged it all over MK the previous day and also I knew we'd be spending a lot of time at the water rides and it would just sit in the locker. I brought my Sony p&s and took a few shots with that but mostly relied on the photo connect pics for documenting this part of the trip.

No park bag for me, just cargo pants!!! Of course I ended up carrying Boo's backpack for at least 1/2 the day.

First ride of the day - Minion Mayhem!!! Totally love everything about this ride. Especially when I've taken my Dramamine. Boo and I both suffer from motion sickness on anything with a screen. We can't go anywhere near those Omni theaters and we always take our Dramamine for Universal. On our way out we met this cutie:

1384062_57560813.jpg

We've been huge fans of the Minions since the first movie and we're really looking forward to the new movie this summer! After Minions we headed right for the Mummy. Mummy is Boo and 2DMT's favorite ride. I have to say after this last trip it may have jumped Spiderman for my favorite too! We rode the Mummy over and over again, it is just so much fun!!! I especially love the launch. We really enjoyed when there were people riding with us who had never been on before. No Spoilers here but those of you who have ridden it know the part I'm talking about. I really love the Mummy ride photos. Once Boo figured out for us when the pic is taken, we had some fun with it. Boo insisted that I lose my death grip on the lap bar and try it hands up! It is a much more exciting ride when you're not holding on, especially that bump!

1384062_57561819.jpg

^^^ This weird guy next to 2DT had pulled his shirt up over his head. The girl at the photo counter covered him up.

After Mummy we went on MIB. This is fun and I usually kick some butt. Boo got the red button however which put her firmly in the win column for this one.

See how serious we take our competition!

Day 8 to be continued....

What a fun US day so far....and yummmmm Cinnabon...making me want one right now! Is the MIB ride just like Buzz at MK? I guess pretty big ride vehicles though...looks like...but is it slow moving or faster? Motion sickness all around here...just wondering if we'd like it :)) Looking forward to hearing more!

MIB is similar to Buzz in that you are shooting at "real" targets, not screens like TSMM. The ride vehicle spins a bit but nothing outrageous and not too fast as you need to aim and shoot. You don't spin your own vehicle like on Buzz. You're competing against another ride vehicle. Boo thinks that if you hit the flashing red light on the other vehicles, it makes that vehicle spin but I'm not sure she's right about that...again happy to have my Dramamine so I can enjoy the ride without worrying. If you get motion sickness and haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. Without it I would not be able to ride about 1/2 the Universal rides. Boo and I take it with our breakfast and then drink lots of water throughout the day since it can be very dehydrating. Lots of pit stops when we're at Universal!

By the time we left MIB it was 80s and humid. We decided to grab some lunch. I had checked reviews and menus prior to our trip and we wanted to try Finnegan's. It was about 12 and I was worried that we'd run into a long wait when I saw a crowd seated on the bench outside and a few families lingering in front. To our surprise, we were seated right away. It was nice and cool in there and service was fast and friendly! No food porn because I never remember to do that! I had the fish and chips, Boo had a burger and 2DT had the steak sandwich (why do I spell sandwich wrong every time? I always add the extra h. Just one of those things that I'll never get right on the first try like is there an h on the end of Pittsburgh). 2DT's sandwich smelled so awesome that I immediately had buyers remorse on the fish & chips. Mine was ok but way too much for one person to eat for lunch and Boo doesn't like fish so I was on my own. Plus it was all fried and totally off of my diet that I'd been trying to kind of sort of stick to. Anyway - we sat, we ate, we relaxed, we left by 1

We were thinking of checking out the wait for Gringott's but it was really hot out and when we walked by King's Cross Station the ac pulled us in. It was a 40 minute posted wait but we really wanted to hit the water rides and in the heat we calculated an uncomfortable, tiring, 30 minute walk from the Potter area of US to the Jurassic Park area of IoA. With that in mind we happily waited in the line for HE which turned out to be a 30 minute wait pus the 10 minute (?) ride. We arrived at Hogsmeade and headed right to JP. We had a quick debate about lockers for the water rides. I wanted to walk down to the Barges and store our stuff there then walk back to JP and start riding from there and end at the Barges. Boo and 2DT didn't want to do the extra walking, they just wanted to ride now!!! so we paid for a locker at JP. I think it's such a fun ride. I'm not a huge fan of the drop but I've learned a secret. I just wear my sunglasses, shut my eyes and grimace out a smile. No one can tell I'm terrified and the pictures are not quite as scary looking! 2DT laughs nervously the entire drop. In the pics it looks like she's having the time of her life! Boo claims to love it but always looks scared. I have to thank the General for Boo's willingness to ride the flumes. When she was little I could never bring myself to do it but The General always volunteered to take the kids on the flumes while my sisters-in-law and I sat out.

1384062_57567511.jpg

We headed to Dudley next. This ride is a lot of fun and the drop at the end is truly terrifyingly fast. I love that it's so much more than just and up and down flume and being old, I remember these cartoons all too well so I enjoy the theme. Again hiding my terror with the sunglasses but you can probably tell from the death grip I have on the handles. In between this ride and JP I'd told 2DT about my sunglass trick:
1384062_57569557.jpg

We actually did this ride 2X in a row... not sure what happened to the other pic, we may have forgotten to scan for it. I'm sure it's pretty much the same...

Next was the Barges. Now Boo and I had been on this together in November even though it was a bit chilly, but for that trip 2DT had opted out. Having lived in FL a few years, her blood has definitely thinned and she is a total wimp about the cold now. We had warned her about getting soaked through on this one so we were all prepared. OMG were we soaked! Not a dry spot on any of us although there was this woman on the ride with us who seemed to have escaped relatively unwet. It was bizarre and not something I would ever expect to happen to me, lol. I am usually the one in the seat that is heading backwards down the hills and gets swamped when we hit the bottom and I'm almost guaranteed to be in the seat that goes directly under any waterfall features. We rode 3X since after the first one there was no way we could get any wetter! Really wish they had a ride photo for this one, it would be hysterical. I can understand why they don't but they need to figure it out!

It was 4:30 when we'd had enough. We debated going on Spiderman on the way out but we didn't want to do that to anyone else as they'd have to sit in a huge puddle from us. I grabbed a refillable popcorn bucket while Boo and 2DT got ice cream - we regrouped in front of the Hulk. While I was waiting for them I had my usual debate. I really want to try the Hulk...it looks and sounds so smooth... but there area few biggish drops and I hate those...but there is no long ride uphill to dread what's coming... but the drops are upside down!... and the ride is pretty long... but it looks like so much fun...maybe another time...

When they arrived at the Hulk we headed out of the park in our soaking wet uncomfortable clothes and walked right back to RPR. Boo was regretting the denim shorts and I resisted the "I told you so". Back at RPR we all wanted a quick shower and fresh clothes before dinner at the Hard Rock...

The kids and I loved Ripsaw Falls! It was walk on when we were there and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Even my Boo Bear liked it and she's a little bit of a ride chicken.. We loved Jurrasic Park too, although Boo thought the dinosaurs were too scary! :)
Looks like you had a blast!

I swear, your MK pictures really make me wish we were there!!

What an awesome day!! Your ride pictures are so funny!! Good tip about the sunglasses lol. Yeah wet denim shorts are never too comfortable. Looking forward to hearing about the Hard Rock...love that place!

I just concentrate on a good pose for the ride pictures. See this is the classic lady GaGa shot or it might be the Glee loser picture. They are always at the biggest drop so I'm too worried about mmy "close-up" than the dropimage.jpg

You guys were rebels going on Ripsaw Falls twice...when we were there at the end of March, everyone coming off of that was drenched...we passed.

Back to our TR. It was Saturday night... we arrived at the Hard Rock with time to spare - we were freshly showered and it was starting to cool off a bit so it was nice to sit outside and wait on our friends. We checked in about 6 and we were told it would be about 20 minutes. I had told Boo earlier that morning that we'd be meeting up with her friend G and her family. She was beyond excited and the minute they walked up she spotted them and ran over. They had come right from IOA at park closing time so it was about 6:15. Our table was ready right at 6:20 so we were seated almost immediately when they arrived despite the huge crowd of people waiting outside and checking in at the front. We hadn't been to HRC on any of our previous trips although I have been to several in other cities. Boo was impressed with the decor and the younger boys (10 and 7, I think) were fascinated by the music videos playing on the tv screens. The music was loud but not too much to have a conversation. I introduced 2DT to our friends and we all had a nice chat while the kids sat at the other end of the table coloring and playing games on their phones. Boo and G were swapping pictures they'd taken that day and taking selfies (ussies?) to put on Instagram so they could make their friends back home jealous.

We ordered and after being so jealous of 2DT's steak sandwich at lunch, the only choice for me was a steak! I ordered the NY Strip medium rare and Boo ordered the kid's chicken tenders. L and 2DT both got some type of salad while J got a giant burger and their 3 kids all got kids meals as well. We got a few apps for the table - onion rings, nachos and the spinach artichoke dip with pita chips. I decided to have my dessert calories in liquid form and ordered a Miami Vice. For those who have never been on a Carnival Cruise, a Miami Vice is 1/2 strawberry daiquiri and 1/2 pina colada swirled together. They are sweet, delicious, very filling and my favorite frozen drink.

Drinks and apps arrived, quickly followed by our entrees (but not too quickly as the apps were gone in a flash!). Everything was absolutely wonderful - one of the best meals I've ever had at a Hard Rock Cafe. My steak was cooked perfectly and everyone else was very happy with their food. We've added the Hard Rock to our approved list of UOR restaurants and we'll definitely be back there. Sorry again no food porn or even a pic of the HRC - I was just having too much fun talking and laughing with friends to even think about taking my camera out of my bag! Looking back now I wish I'd snapped a few at least with my phone!

After dinner it was about 8 and we all walked slowly back to RPR. The kids wanted to swim. 2DT opted for iPad time in the room and J was going to just relax in their room. It turned out that our friends were only about 5 doors down from our room! L and I and the kids all grabbed our suits, met back at the elevators and headed to the pool. It was crowded because it was a Saturday night and the parks had closed early for grad night. They were showing a movie and many of the kids were in the water just floating on noodles and watching Rise of the Guardians. The pool at RPR is big and there are lots of nooks and crannies so it was a bit of work for L to keep an eye on her younger 2 as all we could see were their heads which looked exactly like all the other kids heads. Boo is always easy to find in a pool because she spends at least 1/2 of the time doing handstands so when I want to find her I just look for feet!

About 9:30 we had all had enough and we headed up to our room. The next day they were going to US and we were going to early entry at IOA then hopping back and forth based on what we felt like doing. We agreed to text each other and try to meet up for a few rides at US or for a pool break in the afternoon. It had been a great day and we were all looking forward to some sleep!

Next up our day at IOA then US then IOA then US!!!

A little late but I'm here and following along!

Your MK day seemed amazing!

I can't wait to go back to universal, the hotel looks great too!

Your trip down south also sounded so nice!

Loving your report!!

Great update...I love the HRC everywhere....how awesome that you got to meet some friends down there and spend some time with them! It's always tough to coordinate that kind of thing but amazing when you can make it happen!

Thanks and welcome!!! I've been a bit MIA since the last update, had a very busy weekend but I'm back at it tonight and hope to post our Day 9 shortly.

Yes, HRC used to be a favorite then I had a few mediocre meals at various locations and we sort of took the chain off our go to list but the Orlando one definitely will get a return visit! Boo was so excited to have some time with her friend G and they are such a nice family, it was just great to see them all.
