New Indiana Jones movie coming

Could be a fun movie if they continue the policy of ignoring Lucas's inputs. I enjoyed Crystal Skull somewhat, but there were just too many ridiculous scenes that required far too much suspension of disbelief and it took me out of the movie repeatedly. Like the fridge, the ants carrying away the bad guy ... and the THIRD time the protagonists are swept over a gigantic waterfall and nobody was even scratched let alone drowned. I sensed the heavy hand of Lucas's contempt for audiences ... as if millions of fans groaned in exasperation and were suddenly silenced ...

Great! I think I'm one of the very few who like Indiana Jones more than Star Wars. Hopefully it will be much better than the mess Crystal Skull was.

There are plenty of great Indy stories to tell ... My guess is they do the smart thing and just re-cast a younger Indy ala 'James Bond' and go back to telling stories during the classic 30's - 40's era. No need to use an aging Harrison Ford, as there's a number of great actors to fill Indy's shoes. Rumors of Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper have been around for a while now ... personally I say go for Nathan Fillion

I'm hoping they will cast an actor in his 20's and start with the story of how Indy met Marion in the 20's. Then do another movie every 3 years or so, so they bridge the gap between when the TV series ended and the movies began.

I got basically nothing from that article.

"Yes, we're going to make one. We don't know when. No, we don't have a script. No idea who will be featured. We really don't know if it will be young Indy or old Indy. But yes, we are going to make one!"

How's that for a commitment!

I read an article a few months back that Harrison Ford only agreed to be in the new Star Wars if they would make another Indiana Jones...and that the front runner to play Indy is Christopher Pratt. Supposedly they were looking for Shia Labeouf to take the lead but after Crystal Skulls got such horrible reviews (justifiably) that was nixed...

I'll see if I can find the article.

And for the record...I hope they make one soon! Gotta love a good Indy film. In fact, I'm going to watch one tonight!

Edit: The Last Crusade was the movie choice for this evening. :)

Edit 2: Who's better than John Williams?!

Am I the only one who would like them to circle back around to a plot revolving around the Ark of the Covenant getting stolen?

Those 'top men' have to let their guard down at some point!!

I'm not sure how you do an Indy without Spielberg... And I don't think he'd do one without a Lucas...and I don't think George is getting very many calls for input at this point.

It does make sense on one key level... Indy is basically the claim to fame do Kennedy and frank
Marshall...it's what made them Hollywood big names.

If they're able to replace Harrison Ford successfully (which is a big question mark at the moment) then we can see Disney milking this the way Sony/MGM/UA has with James Bond. It'll become it's own film genre.

Not sure if I'll be happy or sad to see that.

I would be *ecstatic* to see that. Like luisov above, I'm an Indy fan first. Indy is a great story, with lots of potential - and it doesn't need Lucas OR Spielberg. (I don't mind Spielberg coming along, but I digress...) Disney would be nuts to not "reclaim" this series, and I hope it does become their own Bond series. :sunny:

I love the "split" personality that is the character Indiana Jones. There's LOTS to play with there...

Now that I think about it this would be the most depressing thing to happen to a franchise since Han shooting first.

Might as well name the next film "Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Incas".

I see what you did there, nicely done!

What would be depressing? Continuing the franchise? Cutting out Lucas?

The casting of Indy's son in Crystal Skull (Shia LaBoeuf) was also terrible. One of the reviews I saw just now at imdb says it all ... "Shia LaBoeuf as Arthur Fonzarelli". LOL

It's not so much that I found it implausible that Marion might have ended up with a bit of street tough for a son, having raised him as a single mother (although I think in the 40s and 50s she would more likely have raised him as a goodie-two-shoes Mama's boy), it's mostly that the guy didn't look even one tiny bit like his supposed biological father. They must have cast him the same week they cast "young Obi-Wan".

Lucas had very good instincts and film savvy or he couldn't have dreamed up stuff like American Graffiti, the original Star Wars, or Raiders. He only got really bad when he started to be able to use his money to write the checks and hire/fire everyone else on the team.

Who knows, Lucas could have a couple more really excellent movie ideas in him ... just don't use him as a major investor 'cause you won't like the conditions.

The depressing part would be to milk the franchise, but I think we know Disney's intentions regardless. Besides, Lucas really didn't create Raiders. He just copied the film I mentioned in an earlier post. It was a good copy, but the point is cutting Lucas out of the equation or leaving him in makes no difference. Spielberg and Ford made those films.

Some things are so good that if you saturate the world time and time again it begins to loose its luster.

It's kinda like Jaws...one and done should have been the ticket. Instead they had to keep going until it got completely stupid. Jaws is still a classic, but it would have been king of the hill had they just stopped after the first. Countless people know of Gone With The Wind. How many of those devoted fondly recall the sequel?

Some things are just meant to be left alone. I didn't mind Crystal Skull much, but it seemed much more fitting to end it with the ride into the sunset after Last Crusade. Had they followed that formula, we would have the great memories of three and not the mediocre memories of four.

I agree that Lucas has some good film instincts, but his true talent is as a technician in charge of special effects and pulling the right talent together - and letting them do their job. If he's in charge of the whole shebang then it starts to fall apart.
