I'll do this too. I'm from Ontario, Canada and everyone says "pop" here. I go to Michigan frequently and it's "pop" there as well, but the further south I go, I'll ask about soft drinks in restaurants. I remember on the way to Orlando once, we stopped somewhere in West Virginia and when I asked what kind of pop they had, the waitress looked at me like I had three heads.

Same thing with cheese. In the US, it's called "American Cheddar" but here, cheddar is cheddar unless you're referring to white cheddar, sharp cheddar, etc. When I ordered at an a&w or something one time, the poor woman had a hard time understanding that I was asking for just plain cheddar. I didn't realize calling it "American Cheddar" was a thing.

Huh... I've lived in the United States my entire life, & I've never referred to cheddar cheese as "American Cheddar" or heard it referred to as such. It's just cheddar cheese.

I've never heard to it referred to as such either, but I do notice that some brands in the supermarket ARE labeled "American Cheddar."

Hm. interesting! I kept telling her I wanted cheddar cheese on my burger and she was like "you want what? do you mean American?" It was so confusing. I'm in a wheelchair and had my friend with me and the woman kept looking at her like "what is she going on about?" which is one of my pet peeves to begin with, but we got it figured out and I got cheese on my burger so it was a happy ending for everyone.

Hmm...

Was it a restaurant that offered different cheeses for their cheeseburgers?

I'm not familiar w/ A & W, since we don't have any in my area.

Many fast food restaurants don't offer anything but American cheese.

In any case, I'm glad you got some cheese for your burger! And I'm sorry the cashier wasn't very understanding or helpful!

It may have even been a subway now that I'm thinking about it, which would explain the confusion, but I was just so baffled that she was so confused by the word cheddar. It was years ago though, so things might be different now, but the looks she was giving my friend and I were priceless.

Oh yes those that speak to whoever you're with instead of speaking directly to you just because you're on wheels...same pet peeve. :sad2:

We call the fizzy sweet stuff ;) soda here, but a lot of folks around here call it pop.

In NY we just call it soda. I can't imagine going anywhere and ordering a "Coke" when I'm looking for a Mountain Dew, Sprite, or what-have-you. That's counter-productive.
You don't order a Coke if you want Mountain Dew.. You could be asked what kind of Coke do you want. You say Mountain Dew.

Thought of this thread last night when DD17's boyfriend was over for dinner.

me- Would you like soda or chocolate milk?
him - what kind of soda?
me - Coke or Dr. Pepper - he picked Coke

I use the generic 'soda', unless I'm referring to a particular brand.
I remember using 'tonic' when I was growing up in the Boston area

47 years an American & I've never heard of "American Cheddar". "American", or "American cheese" yes, but neither is a form of cheddar.

I've never heard of "American cheddar", either.
