Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Okay, I think I'm going to go for it...solo trip for the GSC! I'm already gearing up for the W&D half, so I figured, why not just do it? (tm Nike) Looking forward to this thread for tips and encouragement. :flower1: I see a few familiar faces already. Hi, Keels.

YAY!!!!! Hey!!!!!

I was debating on whether or not to do this race, since I haven't even paid my DD25 back yet for paying for our W&D registration, then found out yesterday that we are getting performance bonuses on the last check of the fiscal year, June 26. Early registration for AP is June 30th. Coincidence? I think not!

I have been told by several people who have done 5K's at WDW that there is no sweeper for any of the 5K's. I just want to have extra, extra confirmation of this. Ha. I used to be all about running and did races all the time. 7 knee surgeries later I am just not able to run very much. I am going to do the 5K in Feb 2016 and just want to know if I need to stress about the pace requirements. TIA! :)

I think they don't REALLY sweep, but they'll need the park cleared for opening and stuff. I think I've heard of people finishing in 1.5 hours.

It truly is a "fun run" - no timing chips on the bibs, so you never get an official time. Super casual. :)

Thank you! That sounds perfect for me. Whew. :)

Trying to decide whether I want to try to convince hubby to do GSC or only the half. We are hoping that the Castaway Challenge will return for Princess too and hope to do that.

Those of you who have done GSC, would you highly recommend it over just running the half or do you think you would have been okay with just doing the half?

I haven't done GSC yet, but I have done other Disney race challenges...

For me, now that I have gone the challenge route, it's hard for me to go back to doing individual races. I think there's a part of me that
I haven't done GSC yet, but I have done other Disney race challenges...this is what I can think of off the top of my head.

PROS
- more bling
- more race shirts
- more of the runDisney race experience

CONS
- more early-morning wake-ups
- more money spent --> race fees, more nights in a hotel, more time off from work
- likely less park time

For me, now that I have gone the challenge route, I think I'll have a hard time going back to individual Disney races. The pros greatly outweigh the cons, and there's a part of me that thinks, "well, I'm traveling there anyway...may as well do all the races!"

But it's different for everyone. :confused3

That's kinda what I was figuring... if I'm going to be there, I might as well go all out. It is hard to stomach the cost, but this will probably be a one-and-done (for Princess anyway). I better start convincing my husband! :P

Good luck with that! I managed to convince my husband to try a Disney 5K with me...I'm slowly working on getting him to agree to a 10K. Maybe some day! :)

Haha thanks! He's a runner too so he'll be on board with that, it's the financial aspect that I might have trouble with. But there's two months til registration, so I've got some time to work my magic!

Oh, I get that! There's sticker shock, for sure! :faint:

@Ariel484 makes a lot of great points. I think it really comes down to what motivates you!

If you really are interested in GSC and he's not - maybe you do GSC and he does the half? I will tell you - it sucks having to register so far in advance for these things. Not only do they go quickly, but buyer's remorse is strong with them. I'm still a little sad I'm only signed up for the DLH when I wished I would've done Dumbo. But, you know, we registered like back in January before I'd even really run a long race, so ...

That's a good point! That would definitely help keep the cost down. And BONUS - let's say you do GSC and he does the half. He'll be so jealous of your extra bling, it'll be easier to talk him into a challenge next time around! ;)
