How do you plan a trip when...

... you and your spouse have different priorities?
My number one priority is going during a time that will not be super crowded. I want to go either in September or the very first week of November.
My husband's number one priority is that we are there during the Christmas season; his second priority is missing the least amount of work possible, so he wants to go the week of Veteran's Day, which is also the week of a marathon I just found out.
We are at a stalemate. What can we do??

I only take dh every other trip :) that's how lol

Can you compromise by being there over Veterans Day... But not the weekend after? Like Saturday the 7th thru Wed the 11th? That might be a quieter weekend... The transition to Christmas would be happening, and he can go back to work Thursday and Friday, since Veterans Day is on a Wed. this year.

The week of Veteran's Day really isn't that bad, especially earlier in the week. I've taken many trips on or around Veteran's Day, especially when I was a kid. Not all of the holiday stuff will be up earlier in the week, but it shouldn't be terribly crowded and I don't know how much holiday stuff they'll actually be doing with the 60th stuff going on anyway. I totally understand where you're coming from though. How far away do you live? Could you do a trip without him in September and one with him in November?

Definitely can't do two trips, lol, we have been working our butts off to save up for this one! We have four kids, so it's expensive. He doesn't care about holiday entertainment, just the decorations and not missing out on It's A Small World or Jingle Cruise.
So would the beginning of the week + Veteran's Day be better than the second half of the week and weekend after?

Jingle Cruise wasn't up until the official start of Christmas last year. The reason the decorations go up early is for filming the Christmas parade, but the tree and rides are there for the official date. HMH will be running since it starts before Halloween. Assuming his salary pays for a portion of the trip, I'd go with missing fewer work days over lower crowds.

Edited to add: I was wrong. IASW Holiday was up on the 6th last year. In 2012 it wasn't up until the start. In 2013 Jingle Cruise didn't open until after the official start. I think it's a good bet that IASW will be open when the decorations go up but Jungle Cruise probably won't close for the overlay refurb until IASW opens.

They usually tape the Christmas day parade the weekend of Nov 7th. Something to think about with crowds.

What about the week after Thanksgiving? He won't get his second priority, but he'll get his first priority, and so will you. -first week or maybe the second week after Thanksgiving, since the Sunday after Thanksgiving is really crowded.

There probably won't be a Christmas parade this year according to a post I saw from Sherry the queen of holidays... And if they don't have to get the park ready in time for the parade... Who knows when it will be officially Christmas decorated.

I have to be honest and say that while it is beautiful at Christmas-time, I'm probably not returning during that time of year anytime soon because of how crowded it was. I am like you and prefer to visit in the "off season".

If we didn't have to worry about school vacation schedules and taking vacation time we'd do the first week of December. I never understood the holiday draw until our first Christmastime trip this past year - it really is magical- I loved the decor but especially the holiday overlays on HM, IASW and gasp, Jingle Cruise - I hate the normal ride but Jingle Cruise was a lot of fun. We ended up going the 4 days before Christmas as our company had a work shutdown and DD5 was on break. We got there at rope drop and did as much as we could until the parks got unwieldy (10:30am if you can believe it), rested at the hotel, then came back in late afternoon for more fun.

There really is no set of dates which meet all the criteria you mention - and the only one that gets you low crowds + full holiday experience is early December.

I don't see a lot of problems. Your husband seems to want to enjoy the holidays at Disney, but that doesn't have to mean huge crowds. I think the decorations go up before Thanksgiving. And marathon weekend isn't so bad. I do NOT foresee divorce court in your future! :-) These challenges CAN be overcome! Have fun planning!

Interesting. I love the Haunted Mansion unadulterated. Hate hmh. Love the Jungle Cruise.
