It's 2015 people still pay with CHECKS in stores!?

The problem with checks is

99% of the time the person writing the check does not pull out checkbook until all items are clicked by cashier-I see this TIME AND TIME again
THEN....the cashier needs FURTHER identification...ALWAYS takes more time than swiping card

This is almost always an older person....Bless their hearts :)

When I see a "younger" person(under 55) writing a check , I think.....when are you coming into the 21st century?
Even my sis who stubbornly clings to her antiquated Flip phone doesn't write checks....LOL

So in 2015 making snap judgments about someone else is acceptable if:
They are writing a check
They appear to be are older than 55
They appear to be younger than 55 but are (horrors!!!) writing a check
They own a flip phone.

Sigh. Life's too short. But I guess it passes the time in line for some to play guess the ages of the other folks ahead.... On the bright side, it's probably good that the judgy and impatient have a line hobby, bless their hearts. :)

Only place I use one is when I get my hair cut. Otherwise cash or CC. I do not have & will NOT use a debit card.

I pay my hair stylist with a check. She allows me to add the tip in which makes it easier.

I mail checks with my one time bills but don't use them in stores.

I saw a thirtyish person in the store and thought of this thread.

She waited until the purchases were all rung up and then started digging in her purse for her debit card. This was a large tote bag and apparently she didn't believe in wallets. So she was basically emptying that purse on the counter to find her card.

She finally found it and swiped it. Then she forgot her pin number. So more digging for the smart phone. She is apparently looking up the pin number on a password storage app (she does utilize technology,) so more waiting as she turns on the phone, brings up the app, then searches for the pin number.

Puts in the pin number and then tells the clerk "Oh I forgot, I wanted cash back and forgot to push the $40 button." So we go through the whole procedure again.

At this point I was wishing she would just write a check and be done with it.

We probably still have one of those upstairs somewhere too! I almost forgot about the beloved 8-track player, where it would click to change tracks right in the middle of a song! ;)

Oh, I have a cassette player built into my record player too, and still use that as well. :)

Records are back in style, but they are called "vinyl" now, lol.

Yep, like I said upthread, clueless CC/debit users are far more prevalent than slow check writers.

I'm 55 and I still write checks mainly for bills, but occasionally elsewhere. I do not like the idea of being dependent on the internet for bills. Too bad if you don't like it, OP, but here's an idea, get over it as it's not your business. It literally takes no longer to do a check at Costco than it does to run a CC. I hand over a blank check which they run through the register and then I sign it. I use my check card (credit union asks us to treat it like a credit card so we don't use it as a debit card) many, many places, but not at Costco. I mail checks for a lot of our bills also. One day I'll probably set up online payment, but right now I don't FEEL like it. Obviously people do still write checks or check printing companies would be going out of business left and right.

I'm not rude but saying you don't care if others are in line waiting is ruder to me. I always make sure I think about others as well.
But...it's really not the method of payment that causes delays. It's the customer. As in many situations, we can choose to be thoughtful to others, or we can choose to make it all about us. Being prepared with a payment method is helpful and time saving. :)

The only reason you had any extra wait in line was because you had a clerk who didn't know how to use the register properly. Many people have mentioned that 1. Costco is a common place for check writing and 2. They have registers that automatically fills out the check for the customer. So the only problem was an inexperienced clerk, not the payment method in question.

I'm not a check writer in stores, but even if I was, I wouldn't be concerned about holding up the line.

Others have posted how time-consuming some people are when they use debit or credit cards, but I noticed you haven't addressed those posts.

I'm responding to the person who said they didn't care if they made other people wait as they casually stroll through life write all the checks you want I even said in the OP I didn't even notice till the huffs and groans came out

I've waited longer in lines behind young mothers texting and talking on the phone. Not sure why that can't wait. But I rarely hurry now anyway so it doesn't matter.

Why hurry, most Americans end up at the same place anyway. Sitting on the couch watching and eating garbage at 8pm.

One thing you'll learn eventually, life isn't all about you. You will be inconvenienced by other people. It is a fact of life. The sooner you accept that, the less stressed you will be.

What are you talking about!? Do you not see me responding to the person who is saying exactly what your accusing me of!? Write all the checks you want please pay in penny's I don't care:

OK calm down right now you sound like you ARE stressing. FWIW you started the thread and put such emphasis on the word CHECKS !? sounds like you do care.

Did you know this little fact: Peter Luger Steakhouse does not accept any credit cards at either Brooklyn or Great Neck locations. Accepted forms of payment are the Peter Luger Card, US checks with ID, and US debit cards.

I found that kind of amusing.

I personally don't think about whether or not I'm holding up a line by writing a check for my purchases. I hate how Americans, in general, are in such a rush to get nowhere. I want to take my time strolling casually through life. I don't feel the need to give in to societal pressures.
Jana dee- THIS is the post she is talking about- THIS poster has the attitude

Applicable to any and all methods of payment (as well as what an individual's shopping cart may or may not contain):

"Stores put magazines in check-out lines so people can mind their own d**n business."
