Do You Purchase Trip Insurance?

I usually don't purchase trip insurance but did for our December, 2011 trip. We live where the weather could cause flights to be cancelled and December is flu season. We are going again this December and I am questioning if I should purchase trip insurance this time. My question is, do you purchase trip insurance and if you do, do you get it through Disney or have another company you like to use?

Not sure where the best board to discuss this topic is , but I am going to move it to the Resort Board.

In the past I only purchased it for our cruises, but decided to purchase it for our trip last January since we live in Chicago and the last few winters have been brutal. Well, it snowed a ton the day we were flying out and we were delayed 7 1/2 hours. The insurance would have kicked in at 8 hours. Too close for me. We purchased it again for this trip. This trip is a gift from my DMIL and 9 of us are going and it is costing her a lot of $$! From the time we booked and bought the trip insurance last July until now we have had 3 deaths in our family. Plus DH grandmother is 97 and not in the greatest health. So, we felt it would be a prudent idea since we've seen a lot of health problems in the family this year.

Have never purchased it and probably won't. And we usually travel end of August from New England---prime hurricane season! One year we were set to fly out on a Sunday morning--the exact time Hurricane Irene was set to hit our area! I knew the airport would be closed down, but not sure for how long. We called Southwest and were able to fly out the afternoon before instead. Then called Disney and they added an extra day to our stay. Super easy and nothing better than an extra day at Disney!

I have purchased it twice in the past from Disney when we were flying. It gave me peace of mind since you never know what can happen with flights. This June we're driving down and I'm debating if I need it.

I had coverage on one Card, but recently got Alaska card. They have better travel benefits, but no trip cancellation/interruption. So for this August trip I'm looking into getting the Interruption Insurance. I'm most worried about extra hotel nights if airport shuts down for a few days. I believe airlines rebook you at no charge for flights. Not bothering with cancellation because I think all you loose is your $200 deposit?
So far CAA has best price, and am able to get only Interruption. Some insurance makes you get the package, interruption/Cancellation.

Trip insurance comes with my credit card perks so as long as I book everything with my credit card I'm covered.

This may be something I need to look into and see if we have this perk with our credit cards.

How close to a Disney trip can the trip be cancelled where the penalty is just the $200? Is CAA like AAA? I have AAA and may need to see what interruption insruance is with them.

I get it through Disney. It's less than $80 and for me just knowing if something happens we are covered is one less thing to worry about.

Cancellations made 44 days to 2 days prior to arrival have a cancellation fee of $200 per package, but if reservations are cancelled 1 day prior to arrival through scheduled day of arrival, the full package price is non-refundable. You’ll also lose any nonrefundable elements, such as travel insurance and airfare. No-shows will not receive a refund.

Yes, CAA is the Canadian AAA!

Hmmm. If you're trip is delayed due to hurricane or tropical storm/airport closures and you were 3 or so days late arriving, would Disney penalize you? Trip wouldn't be cancelled, just delayed. So hard to figure out what coverage I would need.

In situations like this, as long as you let WDW know, they will work with you. I have no first hand experience, but do know people who have. And you're right, if you're delayed due to weather/flights and you contact WDW they won't penalize you.

Never had to worry about it with my Visa Infinate card, but new Alaska Mastercard doesn't have interruption - cancellation. But I'm flying with Alaska most of the time now. Love their direct flights! It's a rarity from west coast.
So maybe I just need to buy interruption? Ugh. Because if I have to stay 3 or more days extra at Poly due to a hurricane that's going to be $$$

We definitely get the trip insurance through Disney. On our 2010/2011 trip (christmas thru Jan 4th) our flight was cancelled and we had to pay an extra $500 for a different airline/flight to get to WDW 6 hours later than expected. We were reimbursed the $500 for the new flight and 2 of 3 meals for the day. Delta also reimbursed us for our flight since we had to change airlines. Without the insurance we would have been out around $1600. After that trip we have always gotten the trip insurance. We have yet to have to use it again but know we have it if we need it. Kind of a piece of mind thing for us now.

ALWAYS get trip insurance. Peace of Mind for us.. TOO many uncertainties..
We purchase Travelex insurance through DVC and for other trips Travelguard. Used Travelguard once for reimbursement and they were very timely on reimbursement. :goodvibes

I buy the insurance. Not so much for what happens to my money if I cancel the trip, or the flight gets cancelled the day of. I buy it in case of issues that develop while we're away. It's worth it to me.
