For a resort stay only (no parks) would you rather Dolphin/Swan or AK?

Both places would be standard rooms and we'd be there with our 11 year old for 3 nights only maybe doing a waterpark one day. Any sense of which resort has nicer pool facilities/things to do? We'll have just come off the Dream. Both resorts are basically same price (Wilderness Lodge as well, but I think I'd rather do AK).

Thanks!

Well, depends on how tempted you would be to go to the parks if at Dolphin/Swan. We've done both (resort only--2 to 3 days) and AKL resort was more relaxing to us since the parks weren't right there to tempt the kiddies LOL. Our kids really loved the splash area at Kidani, we loved the food at Sanaa/Jiko/Boma, and the animals were really nice to watch. Kids club right there for me and DH to have a nice dinner out sans kids one evening. There are different types of activities/action at D/S area, such as the Boardwalk, minigolf, etc., and you can see the fireworks. There are kids clubs at Dolphin and Beach Club which we've used too; DH really liked ESPN club. Either way you will have a great time!

PS as SPG members we were upgraded from standard to resort view no charge.

AKL/AKV for sure. You can sit out and watch the animals all day long. Both of the two pools at AKL/AKV are nice. But so is the Grotto at the Swan/Dolphin.

We do resort-only stays fairly often and stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. There's so much to do, what with the pools, animal viewing, resort activities... We love it!

Since there aren't parks involved then I would definitely say AKL or AKV. The resort is just a totally immersive experience to me. It also depends on if you still prefer to be closer to the action. But if that's not an issue then it would be a perfect time to take in all that the AKL resort has to offer.

SPG is Starwood Preferred Guest (or something similar to that). It's Starwood's frequent guest program. I love, love the Swan & Dolphin, but it would kill me to stay there and not walk into Epcot and DHS...especially Epcot for food and drinks. If I was doing resort only, I think I would pick AK.

I agree that it would be a horrible tease having epcot and DHS within walking distance. The boardwalk is nice, but not sure if it's enough. I've never stayed at AKL, but it seems like a better choice because of the isolation of it.

Remember, too, that you pay to park at the Swan and Dolphin.

Yes! I hate that.

Additionally, I think you are not technically allowed to attend outdoor campfires or movies if you are not staying onsite. If you will be there for several days, you could really enjoy some of what Disney has to offer by way of recreation and resort activities. Onsite Disney guests get to do so many cool things that aren't park-related. AKL is a fabulous resort and you could easily spend a great three days there without ever venturing out.

AKL hands down. So much to do there & see. Food Choices are good.

A few years ago, we did a non-park split stay between Dolphin and AKL! I thought we'd prefer Dolphin because there is so much to do around Crescent Lake. In the end, we enjoyed many things about our Dolphin stay - we were able to enjoy all the shopping and dining around Crescent Lake, the playground at Dolphin was great for our youngest and the price was great. But it had a convention feel with lots of convention-goers and a very party atmosphere at the pool. And then there was the running joke amongst guests every time we passed by - the underwear that stayed on the walking path outside Dolphin for two full days!

We far preferred our time at AKL. With the back-to-back stays, we really saw a difference in overall vibe when we moved over to AKL. Much more upbeat CMs, and more of a family atmosphere. The balcony outside our room was peaceful, the theming was outstanding, everything was super clean, the pools were fabulous (used both the Kidani pool and the AKL pool - nice benefit for AKL guests!) and the lobby is beautiful (and smells great!) Dining options were fantastic - especially Sanaa and Jiko. It was a really relaxing stay and nice to not be right at the gates of a park.

I know you mentioned that you would prefer WL over AKL, but WL would also be great for a non-park stay. In addition to pools, shopping and dining, WL has a beach and a ton of activities at the marina. We've walked the path over to Fort Wilderness and that offers even more - including Hoop Dee Doo and Chip/Dale's campfire. We've spent lots of resort time at WL and really love taking the boat to CR and resort hopping around the monorail - shopping, dining, exploring, etc. That might get you a little too close to MK, but even if you take the monorail part out of the equation, there is just so much to do at WL and Ft. Wilderness!

I would stay at AKL. It just feels like a more 'stand alone' resort. I think that if I were at the Swan/Dolphin I would feel the pull of Epcot too strongly to be satisfied without going to the park.

AKL has great dining, nice pools, awesome animal watching and comfortable rooms - all in a fantastically themed resort.

We did a pre-cruise, non-park stay at AKV a few years ago and it was fantastic! We've also stayed at the Dolphin and it was nice, but the theming does not compare to AKL. The Dolphin's perk is really the proximity to EP/DHS.

AKL hands down. It's so darn beautiful there!!! and the dining is amazing!!! The animals, the pool......

AKL. Great restaurant choices, nice rooms, nice big pool area. It just feels more like an escape than Dolphin/Swan. Dolphin has nice rooms, but I kind of feel like I'm at any other hotel...

We are booked to do 3 nights, no parks at AKL in June. :yay: We picked it because we would never stay there if we were going to the parks. Plus, we are leaving the kids at home this time and I've always wanted to eat at Sanaa, Jiko and Boma, but we wouldn't take the kids to eat there. We splurged on doing Savannah view. We will have time to drink our coffee in the room because we aren't rushing to the parks. Hope you have a fabulous vacation!

We love to stay at BC and BWI because of its location - proximity to Epcot, HS, and food options. We were considering staying at AKL this December instead of our usual selections of BC, BWI or GF but decided not to because of the isolated location of AKL. We both decided that, if we were not planning on spending much time at the parks, then AKL is definitely the place to be. There's some of our favourite restaurants, the animals, resort activities, etc. and we'd still be able to take Disney transportation to other places if we wanted to have more dining options or just to go to DTD. I also think that AKL is more child/family friendly than the Swan and Dolphin which always feel more like convention hotels to me (though I've never stayed there, only eaten and toured through) and are less likely to be of interest to an 11-year old. So my vote is also for AKL.
