Allegiant Air anyone?

Hi! We are flying Allegiant for our Orlando trip in July. There is news of possible strikes and we are worried that we could be left high and dry. Anyone else booked with Allegiant? Can we do anything but watch and wait?

I am recalling about 10-15 years ago when a smaller, low cost airline (JetBlue, maybe) closed down abruptly. A friend of mine had tickets for a trip the upcoming weekend and had no notice, nothing...then had no plane tickets. This scares me because even if we were to rebook now, let alone right before, the prices would be so much higher.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Travel insurance. That way if something does happen, you could possibly recoup that money lost in airfare... Also, I'd be looking for different airfare anyway. I've read and heard that Allegiant is not the greatest and most customer friendly.

Hmmm, good idea. Wonder if I can add it on to an already booked trip, especially given the situation now. A friend of mine flew Allegiant and was pleased and had no problems. However, I was unpleasantly surprised post-booking when I had to pay for my seat (!) and all bags including carryons. It's a done deal now but those fees ate up all of the discounts. I doubt I would use it again especially for a family those seat and bag fees add up.

Well, just because it's a done deal doesn't mean that plane will take off when you need it to, should there be a strike. It's gonna be a stretch and out of your budget more than likely, but I'd be looking for another airline to get you there. You got caught up in extra fees for everything and it ate up the discount, but if the plane doesn't leave, Allegiant's looming strike (if there is one) will leave you out the cost of the entire vacation. So it might be wise to cut loose those seats or cancel them and get back what you can (if possible) and go with another airline.

Nice thread...wish I WOULD have read it before booking! Live and learn. But the strike thing is a whole different deal.

Again, if there's anything you can do to be proactive in securing another flight(s), I'd do it now. There's obviously a feeling of being left hanging, but at this point, you do still have time. Don't let Allegiant control your destiny of reaching your destination. If there's an extra sacrifice that can be made somewhere or something, I'd do it. The last thing you want is to see CANCELLED on the board next to your flight.

We have flew with Allegiant many times even with the fees it's come out way cheaper. We also have never had any problems either other than a long wait on the runway once.
I don't know what happens if they strike but I hope it doesn't. Just thought I'd let you know not everyone thinks they are horrible.

That would have been DirectAir. I was one of those that had purchased tickets for our vacation and we were left struggling to find cheap flight to Orlando because of it. Lucky I had travel insurance! First time I ever got it and sure glad I did. Never go without now!

Jetblue is quite a big airline still.

I've flown with allegiant several times and are going again in a few days. They are certainly "bare bones" but got us where we are going. Once out of Las Vegas we had a terrible delay on the tarmac which was awful, but it may have been the airport's fault. OUr last trip to orlando was pleasant enough.

Yes it was direct air. We actually flew Allegiant that year from Niagara Falls, and Direct Air flew from there as well. We had a few people on our flight home on March Break that got stuck down there.

We -my then preteen daughter, her friend, and I- traveled on Allegiant Air several years ago because the prices looked so good. By the time I added the charges for luggage and for choosing our seats, the flights cost about the same as Southwest. At that time, Allegiant flew into Sanford and not MCO. The airport agents and flight attendants were the rudest I have ever encountered. Note in the first sentence I said several years ago. That's because I would not fly with them again.

We love flying allegiant! It's more legroom than United and Delta, and cheaper for us. United and Delta are normally $430 and up from the same originating airport, where Allegiant is often $80-$150 cheaper per person after all the fees. Plus it's a direct flight to Sanford, so no changing planes in Chicago O'Hare or Minneapolis with a three hour layover. Sanford was uncrowned and small, and very easy for grandma to pick us up and drop us off.

I don't know anything about the strike! Hope it doesn't happen!

For us, Allegiant is much, much cheaper. Tickets are usually 200-300 per person. We flew allegiant for 100 per person. After fees. I paid for one bag betweeen both of us, and we didn't pick our seats. We care more about saving money than where I sit for a 1.5 hour flight. For us it was the difference between flying and driving so we went with Allegiant. We've flown with them 3-4 times and have always been satisfied.

If it was the same cost as southwest or jetblue I would go with them. But for us the savings are quite significant.

Thank you everyone, it is nice to hear some problem-free stories. My friend that flew Allegiant to Orlando and recommended it is pretty detailed, so I was surprised that she didn't mention the fees, but her experience was fine. A direct flight is nice, and I guess we don't know enough to care between Sanford and Orlando airports. With fees we turned out to be just a bit lower than Southwest.

So far I am finding that adding on insurance this long after booking is an expensive proposition, and airline cancellations are not spelled out as covered, it's case by case. Who would give me coverage for Allegiant now? I received a semi satisfactory answer from my call to Allegiant. Allegiant said that during their last potential strike, when a few flights were cancelled, they worked to put their customers on other flights and in other cases did full refunds. It all depends on the timing and what happens with each flight. Think I am going to wing it. We can drive, worst case, this is actually our first year flying after years of making the drive. I would do that rather than lose tons of $$$ on a last minute airline ticket if the worst case happens and we have no flight at the last minute.
