Renting a car after June 8th?

Do you need to do this only if you have points/driving convictions or also if your license is fully 'clean'?

It reads as though its everyone. Another article on the Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/apr/25/dvla-driving-licence-paperless-car-hire
Should be easy enough from UK with internet access but we are dropping one car and collecting another mid holiday, hope we can get a connection on our travels to get another code.

Not sure how many companies will ask for it, personally I have never been asked for the paper part.

My husband only has the old paper driving licence (issued prior to photo cards being introduced in 1998), will this along with the new code & his passport be accepted? (His paper driving licence & passport were accepted for car hire during our last US trip in 2010 & in Europe since then).

Hopefully more info will be released but can't see it being any different for the old paper DL, all the info is on there, not sure he will even need a code.

The new style is worth its weight in gold for me for ID purposes, this past trip we drove thru 8 different States, some now require ID for every alcoholic purchase whatever age, even if you are 80 or 90 year old. Plus many credit card purchases wanted ID. Its far easier than using a passport.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up Wayne.

I wonder if the rental companies will actually put this into practice or will it be like the counterpart licences which they are supposed to ask for but never actually do?

Think I answered my own question after fully reading the article. Seems there is going to be companies that probably wont take them and some that will, just like the counterparts.

Best thing to do will be to take both your soon to be obsolete counterpart and also the code, just to be on the safe side.

I think you are right. I don't think rental companies care about points, they just want to know you have a licence. They have never checked my paper part on over 50 rentals so doubt they will ask for the code, but I will take both to be sure.

Wayne, following your post my husband & l both replaced our old paper DL with the new photocard one. They arrived within a few days. :thumbsup2
I won't even be driving in the U.S. but the photocard DL will be so handy for ID, prefer not to be carrying my passport about especially to parks when going on water rides!

For renting in the US this shouldn't makr any odds. Over here, absolute fricking headache. They're placing a lot of responsibility on the customer and i can see a lot of renters being refused a vehicle as a result, and a lot of others just saying "sod that, too much work". We've all provided feedback and every single person i have spoken to in my company (Hertz) that are on the rental desks have said the same thing: it ain't gonna work the way the dvla want it to. And we've all told the dvla the same. Give it a couple of weeks of massive customer complaints into the bvrla and dvla and it'll be changed quickly enough!

I have never even taken my paper counterpart with me and have always been fine. I will take it when we go in a few weeks though (along with the code) as it will just be typical that I will need it now I have said it!

Hi
As from now you will have to get a code from the DVLA to access the former paper part of your license as it is now no longer valid.
This code will only last for 72 hours.
We were reading an article in the paper so rang up the car rental to see if it is needed for the U.S. According to them we may need it.
Surprised that the car hire company have not informed us of this before we go.
You will need to give this code to the car hire company if requested...not all company's will ask for this.

I'm wondering about this too, as we go in Oct 2016. Last year I took both parts of my licence but they only looked at the photo card one and my passport. Is there a definite answer on this?

I don't think there IS a definitive answer but I do know, that after 13 years of hiring cars in the US we have never had to show the paper counterpart for the driving licence. Therefore, I very much doubt whether you will be asked to show it or asked for an access code when renting in Orlando (Florida) or even the rest of the US. In fact, I doubt if they will even know our licence arrangements have changed. However, you can always obtain the access code just in case or you can phone DVLA on 0300 790 6801 and leave permission for an organisation to view your licence record (we will have to do this as we are not renting a car until 10 days after we leave the UK).

stubb, I have merged your thread with one I started a few week ago. Not that it matters that much but if we get new info its easier to update 1 thread than multiple threads on the same issue.
