Roxymama's 5k to Marathon, Time to Collect Another Castle

My beloved Blackhawks have a playoff game tonight and Thur. and I knew it would be impossible to get my booty to the gym during the game. So I went last night instead. (see attached pic of my "Earn Your Feathers" Hawks shirt!) Same workout as this weekend with the two repetitions of 1.5min jog/1.5min walk, 3min jog/3min walk.
I only got 2.11 miles on the treadmill. But the workout was only 28 min this time instead of 30-31 min like it has been. It seemed so walk heavy that I tried to push my jog speed for the 9 total minutes that I was running.
Jog 1: 5.5 speed
Jog 2: 5.8 speed
Jog 3: 6.0 speed
Jog 4: 5.6 speed (my legs were getting tired and I didn't want to bust my face open. Being overly cautious is basically my life.)

I was noticing at the lower speeds my stomach would keep bumping the front of the treadmill so I thought, maybe I can go faster. This was my test of that. And I did not die nor feel like I was way out of control.

Wed is next and that will be same workout as above. Maybe I'll try to walk faster too. Then I move onto ones that involve 5 min of running. Exciting stuff ;)

On a side-note: Watching all these people pushing themselves to try harder races is super inspiring. I have no idea if I will be brave enough to try for anything over 5k this year. But we shall see. Maybe in 2016...Never say never I guess :)
So how do you all keep your goals without looking to far ahead to new goals? Or is doing that actually helpful to make this current goal seem easier?

Rock star! You're really crushing your training!!

I know I'm probably the WORST person to be giving advice on this, but ...

In my opinion (barring injury of some sort) You've DEFINITELY got the 5K distance in the bag at this point. Races are such funny things - the adrenaline that they bring not only pushes you to go faster, but ALSO further.

You will hit a mental plateau at some point - and it may possibly be as soon as you do your first 5K. Between now and January, I believe you have it in you to do the 10K as well.

I did my first 10K in January - and I was nervous as all get out in the days leading up to it. But you know what? You put in the work, you reap the rewards. I cleared my first 5K of that 10K in record time, and then I magically hit my stride and put in my best times to date in that 10K. It was such a rush. Plus, the 10K distance is great.

You're OBVIOUSLY putting in ALL of the work right now! I don't think it's too much to shoot for a 10K in January.

Thanks Keels! I am going to talk to my family this week and I may just have to take you up on the offer to run it with you.

I really appreciate the pep talks too! Now off to put all my nervous energy into watching playoff hockey.

Seriously, though. I don't want to pressure you - but you're doing SO great! Just know that goals always change. Bars always get higher. And the unreachable ALWAYS becomes reachable when you try.

Keep it up, girl!

I love the C25K app! It's been a while since I had been running and I started up with it and I thought it was sooo slow, but I wasn't feeling overly motivated to really push running either. I found I am running so much faster as a result of slowing down and working up in spurts instead of just trying to jog the straight 30mins. I've never been a fast runner, but that and some Tim Ferris stuff I read really made a difference in my speed.

As for whether you should do a 10k, the one thing I learned from doing the half marathon a few years back is the first 5k are the hardest. Once you're capable of running 5k comfortably then it's just a matter of building up distance. Nothing is as hard as training to run those first 30-40 minutes straight. Sounds like you're pretty much already good to go for a 5k. A 10k would be a perfect challenge.

I am wondering if I should try take the day off to sign up for the race. I know the marathon is really popular. You think it will fill up that fast?

Hi @boxlessthoughts !!! I heard that the Dopey and the k's fill fastest. I'm taking the day off because I work where someone can take me away from desk at any moment. So if you are set at a computer at noon you should be ok.

You should join us on the Disney Marathon thread under Events and Competitions,

Full disclosure: this is one of my fave people ever in real life and her posting on Facebook about marathon weekend was the first spark to thinking about trying just one 5k :)

I'm going to go google Tim Ferris now!

I did my treadmill workout last night and I kind of pooped out after. I didn't really push my speed because I was content in keeping my breath and exertion minimal. Basically, I was tired last night. But I did 2.03 in 28 min. I know I can do better next workout. Either Friday or sat. I'm thinking sat so I can go outside.

Side observation: when I work out at 8:30 or 9pm EVERY channel at the gym is a crime show. And you can't change the channels. Last night I was treated to women being assaulted on three tvs. Made me want to be ever vigilant walking to my car. Can't we all just watch puppies and rainbows?

Second side note: I can't stop googling sparkly running skirts. Should I wear one to my first big 5k in May. It is called the candy run...hmmmm

Hello again!

I totally agree with @Keels and @boxlessthoughts : you are working really hard, and you'll be ready for the 10k before you know. Long before January 8, 2016! Believe it.

And as my running trainer always says: whoever runs 5k, runs 7k then runs 10k!

And this is how I decided to do the half along with the 5 an 10k in the WDW marathon. To be honest, he almost convinced me on doing the Dopey... :rotfl2:

I won't be able to take April 28 off...but I'll have my lunch glued to the computer at work. And won't give up until I get all my races! :surfweb:

Hi All! I finished my outside run this morning and whew am I feeling the burn. I mean HoooBoy was that a doozy. But I did it!

Personal best distance and overall pace.
2.71 miles in 31 minutes
1.09 miles walked at 14:11 pace
1.62 miles ran at 9:53 pace

Not my fastest run pace but I kind of knew that would happen with these new 5 min run intervals. When my brain was expecting a final 5 min walk and the little C25k app lady said "now jog" I was so mopey about it. But then my iTunes Radio (which has adds now and then) had some ad for who knows what and all I heard was "I'm a tin can but one day I'll be a stadium"
I was like "wait what?" But then I was like "you go tin can!!!" So I sucked it up and ran my final 5 min.

For the first time I ran out of real estate so to speak. I got to my house and still had 1:30 left of my cool down so I just did Laps up and down my driveway.

So in closing: I just want to thank that little tin can who wanted to be a stadium. Hahaha...I think I'm delirious. Time to hydrate again!

And now a series of random questions.

1) Do you all run on the street or the sidewalks in your neighborhoods? I see people doing both. Just wondering what is best. I've been doing sidewalks, but they are a bit old and crackly. The streets have lots of cars parked on them.

2) has anyone bought a sparkly running skirt? Any recs on sites with good ones? My May race is called the candy run and the medals look like big piles of pink, green and blue jelly beans. My "matchy matchy-ness" makes me want to wear something fun. But I don't want to be the super dressed up girl huffing and puffing in the back of the pack either. Should I just say " who cares" and wear sparkles? Will the sparkles give me power?

3) why isn't it Tuesday yet? I'm so anxious to just get signed up for the marathon weekend already!

Haha! I also wanna be a stadium!

#wearealltincans. :cool1:

I would say "sparkle away, girl!"
pixiedust:

I bet it will give u lots of power!

And I am uber excited for Tuesday!!!

Ok, so I talked with my family and I've decided to just do the 5k with my father-in-law this year. Because we are only going to be there for such a short amount of time, and it is a family vacation for my toddler too, two days of running is just going to be a lot for us. And it's a lot more money (that I want to put towards an epic princess castle breakfast.)
BUT BUT BUT
I am putting an 8k or 10k (or call me crazy a 15k/10miler) on my bucket list for the Fall in Chicago area if my body is ready for it. Something where I can just try to run a personal best and something to train for when the 5k thing gets easy (if it ever does, haha)
BUT BUT BUT
I really really want my end game to be a 1/2 marathon at Disneyworld or land in my future. I am not putting a year on it. We plan to go skiing in 2017 as our big family vacation. But mama slipping away to a Princess half or a Disneyland half or a Wine & Dine 1/2 at some point in 2017 or 2018 doesn't sound so bad.

So I guess I just don't want anyone to be disappointed in me, as this is what is best for my current trip. And my cookie intake at Christmas time. It's too bad these things sell out so fast before I really know my ability. I will FOR SURE be cheering you all on all weekend and my friend boxlessthoughts in her Disney marathon debut too. I will be trying to find Keels and PixieHeart pre-5k race for hugs and high-fives and I just need to figure out how to make the most annoying and awesome signs for the marathon!

Oh and tomorrow is my treadmill day so expect lots of exciting updates tomorrow. Like what speed I do all my intervals at...exciting stuff :)

No one here is disappointed in you!! You are doing so awesome with your training, your RunDisney time will come! The races are expensive as are the trips....but worth it as we all know, but when kids are young a mom's life is not always her own (One day that will change).

Can't wait to get your treadmill update! Keep your chin up, you are doing so great!

I really hope you get a spot at 5k tomorrow!
Hope to meet you there too, if I also get a spot :rotfl:

Good luck! :thumbsup2

1. I tend to run on the sidewalks (if there are sidewalks - some blocks in my neighborhood don't have them). I really, really don't like running in the street. It makes me nervous - I even get nervous riding my bike in the street by cars!

2. I bought a skirt from Sparkle Athletic for my 10K in January. I liked it OK enough - it was really simple, no pockets or anything. I actually ended up finding the pattern for one and I am working on sewing another one myself - this time with a pouch or something in the waistband.

3. See below ...

I got my 5k spot. Wheeeeewww!!! That's all for now.

I'm about to go see Cinderella the movie. And it's treadmill night.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So glad you got it!!!
I hope we can all meet for a few minutes at the 5K...I really like reading your journals and sharing experiences!
yay!

So last night had its ups and downs...literally. I hemmed and hawed over revealing my kind of hilarious but also embarrassing story here and my husband said everyone would think it was funny and be supportive.
I did go to the gym...yay me!
But then I managed to somehow drop my water bottle, step on it, and do some kind of commando fall & roll on the carpet landing like a turtle on my back behind the row of treadmills and elipticals. Smoooooth. I "think" only maybe three people total noticed. Either that or everyone else was too polite and were pretending they did not see. Thank the lord it did not happen in front of anyone. Maybe this is why I hide in the back rows of the gym.
One short and super beefy muscle guy came over to see if I was alright. I just laughed and made a joke. Seemed like I have a pretty good case of "road burn" on my elbow and some bruises on my left side of my leg and arm. I am very Irish so I get bruises when it's a windy day.
So at this point I had two options...Run out the door and never look back (which at least I could say I ran that day) OR
Text my husband to recall the insanity that just happened, hop onto my treadmill, pop my headphones back in and pretend like nothing happened. Thankfully I chose the latter.

I somehow managed to score my best distance on the treadmill. 2.76 miles in 31 minutes. Best avg. pace...getting down into the 11's which is good since there is still walking intervals built into that pace. I honestly think because I was so focused on just getting my workout over so I could go sulk away back into my car without looking anyone in the eye...I managed to run really well.

So this morning I have a bruised ego. And I'm half laughing at myself and half feeling a bit ouchy. Maybe I need to add "walking while drinking from a water bottle" to my training program. Seriously. Did I ever mention the time I practically poured a whole cup of water down my front on a very cold March day during my first 5k? Well that's another story for another time.

I feel cathartic getting this out in the open. Now let's hope no one was videotaping me when it happened.

I'm so sorry this happened to you but I know I've done things about as graceful....of course in a gym with people around. Oh the horror! And how does this stuff happen when the super skinny (and very in-shape) chick or very buff guy close by?!?

But on a more positive note-great on your time! You are really doing well with your training! I am really enjoying my runs too. I feel better and I'm sleeping better. And the stories on these boards are very entertaining and make me feel so much better for getting off of my duff and doing these runs.

Thanks for sharing...your husband was right!
