Al Forno - Boardwalk - Major Disappointment

We tried the new Italian restaurant Al Forno's at the Boardwalk this evening and had a very disappointing experience.

We checked in 15 minutes before our reservation. The restaurant looked about half full, but still we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. We were then escorted to a table crammed against two walls ... why do they always put the tables for two in shoved into corners? Are we not allowed to sit in the middle of a restaurant? We asked to be moved and we were seated, again, up against a wall, but at least it was next to a window...

The menu was disappointing, but we decided to try a standard italian classic .. chicken parm. the chicken was thin and over fried, so it was dry. There was a little cheese melted over the top and then a little sauce. The pasta served with the chicken was overcooked and the sauce was very spicy. We've had better Chicken parm at the Olive Garden for a lot less money!

When our meals were served we asked our waitress for some more ice tea, as our glasses were empty. We never saw our ice tear, or our waitress. When our plates were removed by another waitress she asked if we'd like some more tea, we told her we had already requested, and instead of following up she just walked way. Next thing we know our waitress was presenting our check .. so we paid and left not feeling too great about spending $50+ dollars for two plates of Chicken parm and 2 ice tea's. (We used tables in wonderland too)

We did express our opinion about the food and wait staff to the manager before we left, we got the usual standard comment that they appreciated our feed back and would talk to the wait staff.

So.. we really miss Kouzinna .. we had great meals there in the past and were very sad when we heard it was closing.

We will not return ... there are too many other dining venues a Disney that put out a much better meal.

That is a real shame. I just do not understand the lack of service with the waitstaff, they have one job to do and to fail at that there is no excuse. I have seen other reviews that that the food is lacking there. I wonder how long they will stay open.

we are staying at BWV in a few weeks and had thought of switching our Mama Melrose dinner to Trattoria.... we will stick with what we have, the reviews have been really sad for this new place. Thanks!!

I'm sorry to hear about your experience at Trattoria al Forno . We dined there this past Friday and had the best meal of our trip. The food and service were excellent. My wife had Semolina Tagliatelle alla Carbonara - with Guanciale while I had Sauteed Shrimp - with lemon, caper and anchovy butter with polenta. We both loved our entrees. This was a vast improvement of Cat Cora's Kouzzina. I have to agree with you about party of twos always getting the small tables. Most of the time there against walls or some other out of the way place. When we dined at California Grill this past December we were evan place at one of these small tables. That was always the nice thing about CG there were no small tables. We have even taken it upon ourselves to ask for larger tables sometimes now.

Coming from my family restaurant experience. unfortunately it's all about real estate. a restaurant only has so much square footage. more tables of course means more revenue. lot's of places will have round tables for larger parties so they of course need to go in open space. LOL which means the 'two-fers" are squeezed "hither and yon".

but more importantly, sorry about the disappointing meal. I was thinking of trying this one since we are staying at the boardwalk this summer but honestly I never go to new restaurants. they tend to have issues until they get the kinks worked out.

Bummer

Have absolutely no desire to eat here. We're anxiously awaiting the Boathouse and STK! We rarely eat Italian on vacation unless we're someplace known for their Italian food but our go to place at WDW is Il Mulino.

We were also very disappointed when we ate here. Felt the service was very poor and the menu was nothing spectacular by any means. Felt I got more flavor going to Carrabas or Olive Garden. If you want an amazing italian dinner I recommend going to Il Mulino at the Dolphin/Swan hotel.

Oh no!! I am so sorry for you bad meal. I was so looking forward to eating here in September. Now, I am second guessing our reservation. Thank you for sharing.

That's a shame. When we went we had an absolutely amazing waitress. We had a group of about 12 of us and she was super attentive and on the ball with everyone despite the large group, and a number of allergies. Our food was very good too. But I guess sometimes you just have a bad experience, especially where service is concerned it can totally ruin the meal.

I've read great reviews for breakfast. We have little interest in the dinner/lunch menu but crossing my fingers for a good breakfast.

I wouldn't have paid the full price, especially the gratuity. Always talk to a manager before you settle the check if you are unhappy. Talking to the after the bill has been paid does often mean you get the response you did.

Just wondering why you didn't check out the menu beforehand ... Maybe I'm in the minority, but I rarely eat at a restaurant without looking at the menu first.

This is the problem in any eating establishment. You can have a table for 2 where they could tip superbly well, but yet because they're a table of 2, they'll get stiffed and ignored by the servers because that bill will only get so big (playing percentages for tips). As to where a group of 12+, the server is going to do their best to get every last little thing right and be hanging nearby the entire time. Bad service will still equal a base tip of 18% or whatever it is, but most times, it winds up probably being a lot higher than 18% because of the excellent service. More people with better service means a bigger, fatter tip.

Basically what I'm saying is... when you go in, spy around and see what tables your server is working. If they're working a large group that has the automatic gratuity, and you're only a table of 2, your experience will probably be less than stellar from the get-go.

Thanks for your review! I was disappointed to see that of all types of restaurants, an Italian one took Kouzzina's place. I would've really liked to see something different there, almost anything that there are not 5 more of on property would've done. I wasn't interested in trying it & I'm glad I read this review so that even on a whim, I can spend my money on Italian food that I already know is great & a few minutes away by foot.

We had a nice breakfast there last week. I had the scrambled eggs with tomatoes, cheese and basil. My Mom had mickey waffles w/marscapone cheese and fruit and my niece had the apple cobbler pancakes. We all really enjoyed it and our waitress was very nice. I do admit we were planning on going to the Captain's Grille but due to a thunderstorm the boats stopped running and it was pouring and we were right there so off we went. I was glad we did and would recommend it for breakfast.

Thank you for this information. I just changed our ADR to Il Mulino for our Monday arrival. :thanks:

We are looking forward to breakfast there. The dinner menu did not appeal to us and we have no desire to eat there for dinner. Sorry you weren't able to check it before you went.

Thank you for your review, and so sorry to hear about the meal.

I've seen another review with photos of this place, and the chicken parm also looked to me like nothing worth getting in the photo! I had no desire to eat there, and your review convinced me!
