Can you get a PI after accepting the DCP?

Hi everybody!

I was just offered a spot in the DCP for Fall 2015 (woo!). However, I am still in progress on a couple of PIs. Does anybody know if it's possible to be offered a PI after accepting an offer to the DCP? And if so, is it okay to back out of the DCP to take the PI instead?

My dream is to be a ride engineer, so I really have my eye on a couple of the engineering/technology PIs. I applied to DCP as a way to improve my application to PIs for next year---but if I could skip right to the PI, I would!

Thanks for any info you have :)

My son accepted the Fall Advantage CP first. Then he was offered a PI for the summer. So he is doing the PI for the summer and then doing the CP for the fall. But he is still waiting on some other PIs that he interviewed for.

Yes, you can be offered and accept a PI offer after having already accepted your CP offer. However, it will take some time for them to refund your program assessment fees. It's usually 2-3 weeks after what would have been the start to your CP. You will also not be able to partake in CP housing if you are on a PI, so keep that in mind as well. There is usually a limited amount of company sponsored housing available for PIs, but it's not guaranteed. If you are offered a PI and accept it, make sure to tell your recruiter on the phone that you have already accepted a CP and would like to accept the PI instead. (They might already know but its better to tell them to make sure.) Congrats on getting accepted to the CP. You can have a ton of fun in this experience, but you'll ultimately get out of it what you put in to it.
