Marathon Weekend 2016

I'm so excited. My husband is going to do the 10K ... and my mom ... my MOM is going to do the 5k with me!!

My Mom (bless her heart!) has never run before. She wanted to "put her sneakers on and go run" with me when we were in NYC for Christmas this year, and I went without her. This will be her first race ever! I'm so excited, on so many levels.

But seriously...I'm kinda considering the 10k too (because big shiny medal...seriously)...But only like slightly. Not sure I have the time as a working mom to a toddler to ever run a full hour multiple times a week without completely crashing and burning out. But I haven't tried either yet. And then there's the fact that same toddler will be with us on vacation and I'd be taking away some happy park going time when waits are the shortest for her....hmmmmmm.

honestly to work up to a 10k you wouldn't have to run as much as you might be thinking you don't even have to run 6 miles before you actually do it in your 10k ....honestly in my non expert opinion if you can run 4-5 without to much trouble you can certainly do 6.2 :D

@roxymama -- I'm with this!! I was so nervous to run my first 10K (back in January) because I'd barely run 5Ks ... and I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the distance!

I felt like I just started getting into my stride at the end of the 5K. And you'll be surprised at how much you want to keep going in a race - so the 10K is an awesome addition.

My longest run before my first 10K was 4 miles. Just FYI.

Oh that's great! My Dad and Sister are running with me, I was trying to convince my Mam to do the 10k but no joy yet!

OK, cool. That's kind of what I was thinking - at least for the first two-thirds of the training program. I'd probably transition it back to normal on the final few weeks so my running days during training will line up with how Dopey breaks down.
Up until this point, I've done all my long training runs (and my half) solo by myself. I mean, my husband has run at the same time, but he's faster than me so it's not like we were pacing each other or anything - just riding in the car together to and from the trail. I guess, mentally I'm in the place where it's really just me and my race :confused3... I'm going to be running this thing "by myself" - I know, I know ... I'll be with thousands of other runners, but in the end it's really just me.
I think I made my mind up yesterday morning officially. We were in Dallas to do a charity walk for our best friends' daughter via March of Dimes (she was born premature - 27 weeks!! - but is in perfect health at 8 years old!). The walk was a 5 mile course out by White Rock Lake in Dallas. We got there early because I wanted to get a run in, so I ended up running the whole 5 before the walk started and then went back out and walked the 5 mile course again. The run kinda stunk, because mentally I just haven't been into the whole running thing since I finished my first half - but after about mile 2, all I could think about was Dopey. "You'll never finish Dopey if you can't even do this stupid 5 mile run!" and things like that. I finished the last two miles with the best negative split that I've had during my training (we're talking almost a 2 minute improvement each mile). So, I think that's probably what sealed the deal for me.
Well done on your run! I've done the same recently with the negative splits, thinking about Dopey definitely gives me a boost when I'm struggling!

:drinking:@roxymama @Keels I'm totally in for a beer after the 10k!

You'll have to bring your own or wait a few hours. The 10k is over and done with well before Epcot opens for the day. One option would be to have someone hand you one as you run down the boardwalk or past BC/YC. That's how I get mine during the full. You could do the same for the 10k.

I have to say ... I've hit a bit of a plateau lately around 4.5 miles, and I've been worried that I won't be able to make it to the 10K distance (yes, I know January is pretty far away ... but I also know that there will be a point where my body doesn't allow me to go any further and I don't know what it is). Knowing that people have done 10K after only doing 4-5 miles before makes me feel better ... because now I know that even if I don't make it much further in my training, I still should be able to do the race.
Of course, I'm hoping to do the Disneyland Half in 2016 ... so I'm still trying to focus on getting past the 5 mile mark, but we'll see what my body lets me do. I have to get through January first, then I can focus on September.

You all make it real hard to talk myself out of things! I will talk with my father-in-law who is my 5k run buddy for the weekend. Since my whole family and in-laws will all be at a villa I want to make sure that we all kind of are on the same page. But tempted is an understatement right now.

My at home run buddy also just sent me a link to a "Hot Chocolate 5k/15k" race in November in Chicago and I got so excited to see the big chocolate bar medals until I realized they are only for the 15k finishers. Dangit with all these shiny medals!!

The thing about the 10K at WDW is that the first half is a little boring (parking lots, highways)...but the second half is pretty awesome. Epcot, Epcot Resort Area, back to Epcot. That should be enough to help pull you through the last couple of miles! Love the 10K course. :)

Now begins the great hotel debate. I wasn't planning on staying at a hotel - just driving in every morning from my parents house (about 10 minutes away). But now, I'm debating at least three nights at a hotel.

Where is everyone staying?

Haven't decided yet. We are staying at CBR in Sept, and at the Grand Floridian next April, so it has to be something other than those two. I would prefer OKW, but we are also considering Poly and BWI.

Our January trip will be our "long" vacation for 2016. We will be in Florida from 12/30-1/19. About 10 days of that in WDW, but also going to Cocoa Beach and on a cruise (the cruise will come after the races).

Haven't decided yet might go for my first stay in a deluxe.

I'm a newbie runner and this was exactly my story last month (plateaus are SO frustrating). I took a two+ (almost three) week break from running, and focused on cross-training (weights & swimming) instead. My runs are slowly improving again. Also, I bet that the excitement from registration next Tuesday will give you an extra spring in your step (if you haven't already registered)! ::yes::

Keels, are you planning on driving to the races anyway or would you take buses? I always read that you'd have to be on the buses so much earlier than if you were to drive. Since you have family that close by, it might be worth the cost savings anyways .. (I'm very budget-minded). Plus, more money for beer during/after Dopey! :thumbsup2

I'm calling Disney later today for Pop Century prices since the website doesn't have January up yet.

I have to admit...after seeing runDisney's last Instagram posting I'm almost signing in for the Dopey...look at all those medals!!!
I sure feel like Mutley right now: medal, medal, medal! :rotfl2:

When do they release pictures of the 2016 medals? Is it well past when registration begins?
