Making Character Dining Reservation Tips

are the balloons latex? or maylar? my wife is super allergic to latex and this could be a deal breaker

They were regular balloons like you'd blow up yourself. So I'm guessing latex. They're definitely not Mylar.

Anemone, if you don't mind my asking, what day/time did you go? I've read that MM mornings it opens earlier and if you go during that hour there's a better range of characters. We were planning on doing this on a non-MM. I wasn't sure how true the MM thing was.

I was there at 9.30 on a magic morning day, Saturday March 28th. :)

So, my actual questions:
1. Which one is more enjoyable for a rambunctious 6 year old?
I personally like both meals but he would probably love the dance parties with Mickey and the other characters at surfs up.

2. Is this breakfast going to completely take over our whole morning?
It should take 1-2 hours
3. Do you recommend we do the breakfast on our first day in Disneyland or our second day (we're doing 2 days in DL, one day in CA, and we aren't getting park hoppers).
if you do surfs up I would recommend you do it on a non park day if you have one so you can be in the parks as much as possible.
4. How quick on the draw do I need to be tomorrow making reservations?
you have time. It doesn't fill up that fast.
5. Is there any preferred seating or secret tip or suggestion I can ask for that is lesser known that might make the experience even more enjoyable? Something neat that I don't know about?
When being seated I like to be in the middle of the room. When they out you in the back or a corner I felt that we did not get as much character interaction. When we were at Minnie's the last time we went we were in a corner and the back and some of the characters couldn't even fit to come see us so we had about 6 characters that skipped us and that was really dissapointing.

Has anyone mentioned the breakfast at Storytellers? We've done Minnie and Friends and were considering Storytellers for our upcoming trip this time around.

We're doing Storytellers this trip. I've read the food is better than at Minnie's, though it appears to be similar offerings. We've done Minnie's twice and enjoyed it, we decided to do Storytellers because they should have some lesser seen characters like Meeko.

Storytellers will have the rare characters that are much harder to find in the park. The bears from "Brother Bear," the critters from Pocahontas, and of course Chip and Dale. I would love to do that breakfast someday, but my son was terribly disappointed last time we were at DL in 2013 because he wanted to meet Mickey more than any other character, and we missed him. Soooo this is a do-over, and I'm gonna go one further. Instead of just a quick signature and pic, he's gonna have breakfast with the mouse ;)

We were at Surf's Up last Friday. We made a 10:50 reservation and used it as lunch/break from our early entry DCA day. It was fantastic as always. I think it was the last reservation time. Food was hot and fresh (and so much better than Minnie's IMO). We had mimosas (extra charge - but not an option at Minnie's - although Storyteller's will also serve them). It wasn't crowded and our kids had a crazy amount of time with Pluto, Stitch and Mickey. Once no more guests were coming in, Mickey left his spot and came and hung out with us, too. We have a great pic of the 4 kids with the 3 characters - so fun!

Tons of great info on this thread! It's making me rethink our plans, but that's fine. Once we are there and see what DS really likes, I suspect they will change again :)

I do have some questions too.
In general, which characters usually show up at which place? Right now, our son's favorite is Goofy, and I am hoping that we can meet him at a less expensive venue than Goofy's Kitchen.
I am also wondering whether DS will even eat anything. He generally eats a lot when he sees other kids eating, but I am wondering if the characters will be too distracting. Have any of you noticed what this does to your kids? Our son didn't cry with Santa or the Easter Bunny (he acted more like they were coming to see him than the other way around), but I don't know what to expect when he sees the characters. Oh forgot to mention - he will be 2.
And as far as vouchers go, where can we find out how much the meals are, so we can know whether it would be worthwhile to get a voucher?

At 2 my daughter was more interested in the food than the characters. LOL! We have a funny video of her stuffing her face and Tigger making fun of her. Mickey can only be found at his own meal and Goofy at his. Minnie is at several of the meals. They can all also be found in Toon Town in or around their houses and at the beginning of Main Street.

My family loves Storytellers. Kids love the animal characters, DH and I love the ambience, and we all love the food choices! Overall it feels less frenetic than the other character dining. We have been to all of them except Plaza Inn. Storytellers feels like more of an escape.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to this meal. You should try the Plaza sometime, early morning is best.

We've done all the character meals. For your situation I recommend either Surf's Up for M&M dance fun or Storyteller's for a fun bear jamboree feel with country, boy friendly fun (they do songs and a conga line). Plus you can check out the Grand Californian which is worth seeing in and of itself. I prefer the breakfast food as well as the atmosphere at Storyteller's overall. Plus you'll get the most out of your vouchers - I could be wrong but I think the Minnie's breakfast is less than what you paid? We get a discount with our passes though so I could be wrong. I like the recommendation of doing either hotel breakfast on one of your non park days. Plus can't you valet at the Grand if you're eating at a restaurant? This would probably go for any of the hotels. So don't rule Goofy's Kitchen out! It's fun too and you can check the DL hotel out. It and Surf's Up at PP will be most Disney. Storyteller's will be something different but equally special and appeal to your boy. :)

Agreed!
