I always wonder if it is smart to purchase flight insurance. Does it usually cover any illness that could happen in case the flight had to be cancelled. I have small children and wonder if one of them became sick before the trip, would it be covered, if we had to cancel our flight? If a stomach virus went thru the house, would it cover if we had to cancel?

I believe that most acceptable reasons for flight cancellations are for illnesses that are more severe than a stomach bug. You would need to read the contract info on the insurance site.

Read all policy descriptions and exclusions carefully, often the ones you buy on the airline websites don't have extensive coverage. Typically, with any insurance, the medical condition has to be severe enough to prevent you from traveling. Not just a doctor's note, they send full detailed paperwork to be filled out by the doctor and the hospital.

That said, if you are booking with Disney Travel Company, or a TA that will use Disney Travel Company, the Disney insurance is a flat rate of $77.50 per adult, under age 18 are covered for free, and this ins. WILL cover any flights that you book yourself for your WDW trip, unlike many other travel suppliers whose ins. will only cover what is purchased through them only.
Disney uses Travelex, who I find is very fair in covering claims, but you still need all the relevant paperwork and claim forms.

You need to read the policy you are interested in to see what is covered.

Most of time when I read those policies I can't figure out what is covered. You almost need to be a lawyer to understand most of the contracts. Which is one of the major reasons I never buy the insurance.

I just read a post on Facebook that illustrates reasons for travel insurance other than cancellation. A woman was hit by a scooter while walking in MK and had to go to the hospital. Not only does she have medical bills from the hospital, she lost 2 days of her vacation. The driver of the scooter had a child riding in front, the poster is trying to get information from the incident report to seek action against the person.

Not always. I usually buy Travelguard, and their policies are easy to understand. They also provide excellent customer service and are available via phone to answer questions.

I bought a policy through an airline website when I booked a flight for my friend. They emailed me the policy. It had an exclusion for pre-existing conditions. I had bought it because I thought my friend might have to cancel due to a pre-existing condition. So I immediately called and cancelled it.

Why why why would she do that? It was an accident. Surely she has medical insurance to cover the emergency treatment?

I know you don't know why, but still, why?

Because the woman should not have had her child or grandchild standing on the front of it blocking her view, they may have also been touching the steering wheel. It was a rental scooter and most likely the contract said no children riding on it. It was an accident due to recklessness, and just like if you had an auto accident, the person at fault should pay. If this woman has homeowners, it may pay.

She has medical insurance but will have deductibles and copays to pay. She actually ended up with the scooter on top of her. I would copy the description of the accident but it was pulled from the facebook group because of course the discussion went down hill regarding the safety of scooters.
