Marathon Weekend 2016

See, boys and girls, this is the kind of thing that happens during drunk texting. ;)

You won't be disappointed, and you'll have lots of people here to support you along the way in your training and on race day. :thumbsup2

Also, you know this is all your fault, right???

I wasn't even drunk! But yes, I should definitely serve as a cautionary tale.

I'm going to go with the Higdon plan, but I'd like to invert the days so my long runs are done during the week, not the weekend. I don't work so I have plenty of time during the week to run and I'd rather not take away large amounts of time from the weekends when my husband isn't working.

Thoughts on that?

Nothing wrong with that at all. His plan, like all plans, is done on a 7-day schedule. You can easily shift the first day of the week from Monday to Thursday so you can do your long runs on Tuesday and/or Wednesday. The only drawback to this is that it might be tough to find people to do your long runs with in the middle of the week. Some people like running alone, others like going with a group, so if you're the latter, shifting away from the weekends might be mentally challenging for you.

Yes, I do. :rolleyes1

What is the WISH meetup? Sorry still pretty new to Disboards.

On Friday afternoon of marathon weekend, usually at 4pm, people from WISH (i.e. this board) get together to meet, chat, talk about the races, and take a group photo.

OK, cool. That's kind of what I was thinking - at least for the first two-thirds of the training program. I'd probably transition it back to normal on the final few weeks so my running days during training will line up with how Dopey breaks down.

Up until this point, I've done all my long training runs (and my half) solo by myself. I mean, my husband has run at the same time, but he's faster than me so it's not like we were pacing each other or anything - just riding in the car together to and from the trail. I guess, mentally I'm in the place where it's really just me and my race :confused3... I'm going to be running this thing "by myself" - I know, I know ... I'll be with thousands of other runners, but in the end it's really just me.

I think I made my mind up yesterday morning officially. We were in Dallas to do a charity walk for our best friends' daughter via March of Dimes (she was born premature - 27 weeks!! - but is in perfect health at 8 years old!). The walk was a 5 mile course out by White Rock Lake in Dallas. We got there early because I wanted to get a run in, so I ended up running the whole 5 before the walk started and then went back out and walked the 5 mile course again. The run kinda stunk, because mentally I just haven't been into the whole running thing since I finished my first half - but after about mile 2, all I could think about was Dopey. "You'll never finish Dopey if you can't even do this stupid 5 mile run!" and things like that. I finished the last two miles with the best negative split that I've had during my training (we're talking almost a 2 minute improvement each mile). So, I think that's probably what sealed the deal for me.

I love Pop Century! I haven't done it for a race yet, but may end up there for this one (my first choice is AoA, but I may switch to Pop if the price is much better). If you're used to luxury hotels, it'll be a culture shock, but it's a good hotel for the price, definitely enough room for one person, and we've had good bus service there (again, not for races, but for the park).
As someone else said ... you can also hop on the AOA bus if it comes first (the two hotels are connected by a bridge and it's very walkable - we took the Pop bus a few times on our last AoA stay), which is always nice.

Four of the five RD races that I have ran in I have stayed in POP. It is a nice resort. My preferences are I do not need all of the extra stuff. Also agree with using the AoA buses instead of POP if the lines are crazy long.

Well, good for you Keels! You will do great!

I've being to Pop Century in 2011 and loved it too (specially the 6pm hustle!). Maybe it's time to go back! Unless the free dining is really released April 23...than I'll probably try a moderate...or just upgrade to regular dining. I've being dreaming about that California Grill dirty martini! :P

I would recommend going with a Disney Resort. Especially is you are doing a solo trip. The transportation is super convenient and you will be surrounded by runners, so lots of people to meet.!

That's what I hope for!
I really feel safer being inside WDW Resort, and the DTS is a big perk as well!

Is anyone putting a Dis meet up together? What is this "WISH" meet up?

I'm prob going to be in OKW but that's for 4 of us, Pop Century is lovely and you have the added bonus of being able to hop on the AoA bus back after events if it has a shorter queue!

Oh, I didn't think of that! It would be really nice to explore AoA! Thanks for reminding me of that! :disrocks:

Oh, I hope we meet there then (at the Pop or across the bridge! Haha).
I sure hope they have busses to the ESPN WWS for the health & fitness expo!

we are looking at AoA for are stay would love to meet up with everyone at Pop...wich I recommend as well havnt done it for a race weekend as this is my first one but we usually stay there for our regular trips and love it

Thanks. Figured it was something like that. Appreciate the info. Sure hoping to be there to meet some of you all.

Well, the 5k starts half an hour later than the other three, so there's not four days of 330am to begin with. You get an extra 30 minutes the first night. Then, you can really sleep to 345 and still make it to the start, so now we're looking at one day of 415 and three days of 345. Better, right? Do it! Do it! :) :)

Unless your wife volunteers to work at the 5k and you still have to get up at 3:30 to go with her to Epcot :-)

WISH stands for "We're Inspired to Stay Healthy." This Events/Competition board is a subset of WISH, which is itself a subset of Dis. On Friday afternoon at Pop, usually at 4pm, people get together for pictures, race chat, and a chance to put faces with a names for an hour or so. You'll see a few dozen people in very bright green shirts and jackets like the ones shown below. Can't miss them. :)

I've decided to go for the Happy!

This is the thing where you drink a giant beer in Epcot after running the 5k. They give you an extra medal for that right?

But seriously...I'm kinda considering the 10k too (because big shiny medal...seriously)...But only like slightly. Not sure I have the time as a working mom to a toddler to ever run a full hour multiple times a week without completely crashing and burning out. But I haven't tried either yet. And then there's the fact that same toddler will be with us on vacation and I'd be taking away some happy park going time when waits are the shortest for her....hmmmmmm.

Maybe I come back and do a Princess weekend or Tink or some such all by myself for a longer distance in 2016.
