I know that we will be charged at the end of the cruise for certain tips.

I think I over looked Palo, we are doing brunch and dinner, So how do we tip here? Cash is best ? or sign for tip?

Room service again Cash or sign for tip.

Also We have always come across a cast member that has added some much to our trip or went above and beyond what is Disney standard for something extra special. We have always just tipped in cash, this is still okay. Right?

Palo at the end of the meal they give you a charge slip for the service fee and you add the tip then.
Cash isn't the normal thing, the ship is cashless, but if you want to do it its up to you, but 99% of people charge it to your stateroom account.

For special CMs give them a 'gift' direct say youth counsellors, or you can go to guest services, some roles may not accept cash, but often if you offer a couple of times they accept.

room service give cash. if you prefer to sign for it make sure to let them know when you phone in the order as more often than not there is no receipt to sign unless you have asked.
if you want to do something for childrens councillors i would suggest you bring on candy or magazines as they are not supposed to be taking money and can get into trouble by doing so. they do appreciate a treat of other forms though such as the candy or magazines i have mentioned.
palo is your choice however it is easier if you do sign for it and not give them cash. either way they will be happy.
enjoy your cruise.

We tip cash in Palo. I really do not think it makes a difference (IMO). I have heard so many different opinions of which is better to tip in cash or sign for tips. I can never keep it straight to I just tip in cash at Palo and room service. I've often heard that cash tips to Palo servers is better which is contradictory to above post so my guess is that whatever you do is fine.

I also always tip cash for room service deliveries.

the only issue with cash tips is that all but the officers share cabins therefore they are encouraged not to keep large sums of money in their rooms. this means that they need to take the monies to the pursers office to be deposited into their account just as they would at a bank. with the minimum amount of off time they have it is an unnecessary stop, plus the purser is only open certain hours.
so yes, they will take it either way however you are doing them a favor by signing for it.
this information comes from my friend who was an employee of dcl. others may disagree. take from it what you will.

I understand the process and that is why I said there are so many different opinions over the years. I have spoken with many, many CM throughout our cruises and more often than not they said they prefer cash (when the topic was discussed). So, some prefer cash, while others prefer tips charged. No right or wrong answer.

When I have spoken to them it seems they all wanted it charged.

  • Their not allowed to carry too much money, -could be accused of something.
  • The charge system means they do not need to bank it in the ship.
  • They sent the majority of it home anyway so direct from their wages.
  • They are assessed on tips anyway so if any tax to be paid cash would still be assumed to have been paid in fact if its charged its clear how much the tips are, if the are stiffed, with low cash tips they could be liable for higher tax.
  • Charge is recorded and cant be lost, like money.
  • They only need small amounts to buy things in port, so say 5% in cash is handy but most things they can get.
In the end the ship is intended to be a 'cash free' environment as handling cash causes extra work and costs. Electronic banking is cheaper.

My niece worked the Wonder for 3 contracts and her best friend worked Palo, I asked this exact question. She got us our reservation and told us the severs prefer cash tip. Now I realize that was only the Palo crew at the time of her Wonder contracts. But I have also learned it is ok to tell my server I would like to leave them a gratuity and would they prefer cash or on the room charge.

For the end of cruise envelopes for stateroom host, server, etc, am I not supposed to put cash for the additional tip that I would like to leave? That is what we did on our 1st cruise and I was planning to do next week also.

You may add cash to the envelope (along with the tip coupon), if you wish. Or you can go to Guest Services earlier to have additional amounts added to your gratuities. Whatever is easier for you. We always put additional cash in the envelope.

Our favorite head sever was promoted to a non tipped position. Unfortunately we didn't bring enough cash last sailing and we wanted to tip him. We went to guest services to see if we could add money into his account or have a tip coupon for him and we were told absolutely not. They pointed to the blank envelopes and said we could only tip him in cash.
