Hello Fellow campers,

We are planning a trip to the Fort in July, but would like to stop at a campground near the beach for a few days before we arrive. We are having no luck at any of the state parks in South Carolina, Georgia or Florida! We will be driving from the Atlanta area, and I found a place called Rivers End Campground in Tybee Island Georgia.

It says its only 1/2 mile walk to the beach, which is fine with us at this point. Has anyone ever stayed there before, and if so is it nice? I get very leery of mom and pop campgrounds, as we always stay at the Fort or State parks.

Thanks in advance for any help or even some other suggestions along the coast!

State parks usually fill up 11 or 12 months ahead of time in warm weather months. http://www.rvparkreviews.com is a great site where you can get great info on both private and public campgrounds. I've never stayed at the park you mentioned, but there are plenty of reviews out there on it.

Look at Fort McAllister in Richmond Hill, GA. Great state park on the Ogeechee River near Savannah.

I haven't stayed there but checked it out in person a couple years ago as we were considering it. It is close to the beach but is not a super nice campground. We tent camp though. If I was in an RV I would probably stay there if I wanted to be close to the beach.

Our favorite is Skidaway island SP little further down. It is GORGEOUS and cheap. There isn't a beach, but you can walk to the water. Tybee is about 20 minutes away if you still want to swim in the ocean and Savannah is very close too.

i agree with chickp, we have stayed one night and left the next day, moved to skidaway, skidaway much more pleasant, also we found the beach on tybee not so clean, they do not remove stuff washed up onto the beach as they would over on emerald isle, have you tried st. augustine? not directly on the beach but close enough-good luck
