I didn't see the trailer, I chose not to after reading the article Orreed shared with me on the YA thread.
Of course it's going to be awful. Horrible names, IMO, are not only awful but are one of the first clues that the character is badly or chees-ily characterized. And trust me, these are some cringe-worthy names, especially Mal, Evie and Lonnie. The only decent name is Jane, the fairy godmother's relative.
And the costumes! Disregarding how awful they look as a human being, as a costumer's perspective, they just look so uncomfortable, so out-of-place, so over-the-top, and ultimately too much like modern versions of the real characters' outfits. It's one thing to have touches and influences, another thing to overdo it. The guys' suits aren't that bad, it's the girls' dresses - no one dresses like that! Even in elaborate ball gown type of dresses, every part has a purpose. This has come from basically since humans have clothes, so fairytale times too, and you know what those people did? They didn't waste fabric! Fabric took ages to make. You had to take the cotton from the plant or the wool from the sheep or the silk from the silkworm and then you had to actually BY HAND make it into a more thread-y, accessible form (you also had to make the thread to sew with), and then you had to sew or weave the whatever you were making by hand unless you were lucky enough to have a weave to assist you, all without a pattern for a very long time. Standardized sizes, you know, S M L XL etc, weren't even in existence until the Civil War started and people needed to make soldier uniforms quickly. So those little frills and stuff with the fabric on the girls' dresses that have nothing to do with how the fabric moves or how the dress is worn - it just really bothers me.
I know the Camp of Disney thread s on a writing low because there's no real conflict going on because they're at Disney World, but all of the (Place) Of Disney RPs so far I am CERTAIN have better characterization, naming and plot than Descendants does. That's sad, Disney - you're getting out-done by a bunch of teenagers.
I don't even think Dionysus could save this and he's the Greek patron god of theatre! (I like mythology, plus I'm a theatre geek, don't judge me)
