Marathon Weekend 2016

Both the DW and myself are planning to run the half in Jan 16 as our first half marathons. Does anyone have an idea which hotels will be the host ones? We are starting to budget the trip now - so we're hoping that there's maybe a moderate that might have some race discounts.

Also, any thoughts on the best method to train long distance? I normally run 10ks and DW does 5's but we've started planning to amp up the distance. She's thinking of trying the Galloway run 3 or 4 mins and then walk 1 to see how it works for her.

I ran my first half on the 14th - and I used this plan to get me ready:

Yes, it's a very aggressive plan, but I only had a short period of time to train. I wish I had taken the cross-training portion more seriously, in retrospect. I'm doing more cross-training now and after about 10 days, I can already tell a difference in my stamina on my runs!

As far as the "schedule" goes, I'm following the Galloway plan but I'm ultimately ditching the concept of intervals. My times and runs went better, further and faster when I wasn't doing intervals than they are now that I'm trying intervals.

Thanks for the advice, Keels! 5 miles was my longest distance at the end of January and I was running 4 miles without issues in February. Suddenly in March, I feel sluggish and can't even run 2 miles without gasping for breath (at the same or even slower pace). No idea what's going on with my crazy body/mind. For the last few runs, I tried doing intervals, but I felt even more tired. Maybe I'll go back to running nonstop like in the past and add in swimming as more cross-training (I already lift free weights twice a week).

I feel like when I went with the intervals, it made me feel like I had more of an excuse to walk when I really probably didn't need to.

I'm starting the DLH Half program for time improvement on April 29, so what I'm doing right now is Week 1 of that each week with cardio/weights/swimming/cycling on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then I repeat that every week until the start of the DLH Half program. I'm hoping that will help me improve my conditioning and endurance so I can pick up a little speed.

during marathon weekend all on property hotels are host hotels so once the race discount is announced you should have your pick assuming they have availability

as far as intervals go I've never used them, my body is used to running now and I know if I tried to switch to that method I would hate it, if you are able to run a 10k you shouldn't have much trouble moving up to the half as long as you use a good training plan that ramps up the distance slowly so your body gets used to it, the dw may have a harder time but its not out of the realm of possibility given how much time you have between now and the race. you will just have to experiment and find out what works for you guys, everyones body is different and responds in different ways

Do the resorts offer a race discount? When does that usually happen? i have not yet booked anything, but would like to soon. Can you trade in for a better rate once you book something if the rates get better at a later date?

A lot of questions, any thoughts? Thanks!

The discount is usually announced in the fall. We've always made our reservations in the spring and then asked for a rate adjustment once the discounts are available.

You can't keep telling everyone how nice it is, though, or else the traffic will start to get bad. :)
I had the same thought just as I posted, lol! My lips are sealed from her eon out :)

Agree with both of you. In the last 3 WDW Marathon Weekends I've run, I've always taken a car and its my preferred mode of transportation. I stay off Disney property and have NEVER experienced a problem *knocks on wood* I wake up at 3:50 out the door by 4:15 and in the parking lot by 4:45.
I like to get there early, so I'm out the door within 10 mins of whenever race buses start running, but ditto - never had a problem.

As far as the new PoT policy, does anyone know if you can keep re-submitting new times during the open window or it is just a one-time submission?
Yep, you can submit and submit and submit - only the last one you enter will be used. Bonus: it tells you what estimated finish time they'll be using each time you submit, so if you have, say, a 10K and half you could use and want to know which is better, you can try each and go with the faster estimated finish time.

All of them! Every WDW resort is a host for Marathon Weekend.

I used Galloway's plans when I first started distance training - I think they do a good job of preparing someone to finish the race without being in agony. But I've found that I do better with a modified Hal Higdon plan (just Google Higdon training) now: I feel like the longer mid-week runs, plus speed work, plus back-to-back days took me from "just" finishing to being able to tackle time goals. I've also found that I absolutely don't need to take my training runs as long as Galloway suggests - I prefer to top out at 10-11 miles for half training. But everyone's different, so play with a couple and see what feels good!

Hey everyone, I posted in the Dopey thread too, new to the forum and really excited about Dopey 2016!

All this talk of how quickly the races have been selling out has me super nervous, I've to sign up 3 of us for Dopey, can you do all three together or would we be better to try individually on seperate computers?

Thanks for all the info/help PrincessV! Much appreciated

You have to do it individually - I would encourage y'all to try to sign yourself up individually on separate computers, and be online ready to go 10 minutes before registration opens.

Another option - if Dopey is super important to you, around AP/DVC Early Registration, most of the travel providers will open up their bib sales. You will have to buy park tickets and a requisite hotel stay to guarantee your bib, but you can book everybody at one AND guarantee you are in the race before registration opens. They also do payment plans, which helps take away some of the sting of the registration fee right away.

Hope this helps!

I know the full takes months to sell out but if I want to register for it during early passholder registration April 14th how long will the passholder slots sell out or will they at all, and if they don't will they just close the early registration so you have to wait until April 28th.I don't know if I can get off work that day and probably won't be able to be in front of my computer at noon,so do you think I could sign up at 6-7pm that day?

It's not the same event -- but for the Disneyland Half, early registration for the half lasted until the next day at about Noon. Open registration also lasted almost a full day for the half marathon.

I think the reason they do early registration two weeks in advance is to give people "time". I honestly can't imagine the full selling out as quickly as some of the halfs and challenges have.

Even if they close the AP/DVC early registration before you can sign up, I wouldn't stress too much about it. I highly doubt the full will sell out quickly during normal registration. Dopey, the 10k, and the 5k will be sold out in minutes or hours, the half will sell out in days, and Goofy and the full will sell out in weeks or months. Since you're just looking to sign up for the full, you'll be able to do that without any problem on the 28th or after.

That's good to know. A group of us (5-8) is looking to run various races in 2016, but we're all looking at the half and full (and one Goofy), not the 5K, 10K, or Dopey. Sounds like we shouldn't have any issues getting into the races we want.

Act quickly on the half,it can go quickly, maybe not as fast as the small races or Dopey but it will go quick.

I am betting even with the larger field for the half, it will sell out in about 30 minutes. After the Wine and Dine nobody will take any chances. I got in the W&D using the AP link with my cell with no problems at 12:10. When I got back on the boards later I was not surprised to it sold out.

I've been looking around for the backdoor link and haven't had any luck just yet, but I'll post it as soon I can!

I'm 100% in for the full, but my husband is thinking about doing the 10K (he's not a fan of the half distance, but feels like he should do something since we'll be there).

We were actually at EPCOT for the finish of the full in 2014 and it was just so awesome. We actually talked about it last night, how he thought back to seeing the crowds and all the cheering and how much support there was at that race and that's why he decided to run some of these events along with me.

So, I'm guessing I'll do the 10K as well if he does. Anyone think this is a bad idea?

im running my first full that weekend as well and will also be running the 5k with the DW who will be doing the 5K and 10k, I think you should be ok as long as you don't push yourself to hard during the 10k
