New Downtown Disney news

I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know when it's expected to be completed?

Thanks rteetz. Does anyone know when in 2016? Just wondering if they are looking at being finished early or later in the year.

Because its a retail facility - expect a phased opening until completion.

You won't see a "ribbon cutting"

They have started
To open the first phase of stores one at a time...I would expect that to continue. Time is money as most things are on third party lease agreements

Yeah-- walked through it again last week--- lots of new walking areas, new buildings that look great, but still I have no interest in any of the new stores. It's a shame. The parking garage is awesome-- They have a sign at the entrance telling you how many spaces are available on each level, and at each row there is a sign telling you how many spaces are available in that row, and above each space there is a light that is on if the space is empty. Made it really easy. Still nothing I want to do there. I will probably try some of the new restaurants and hopefully they will have nice lounges, but to travel there from the resort, eat at a restaurant, and travel back to the resort--- that is a little much travel when I can get meals elsewhere.

I'm with you, Dave...

As it stands right now - I will be going for pucks and maybe a half hour for the kids in either the toy store or world of Disney...

That's all I've done for along time.

Days of Christmas...15-20 years ago...was maybe the greatest retail store ever. I spent hours in there. But like the rest of the property - they got rid of anything not mass produced and of the cheapest quality and it's 1/2 empty now.

That is the worst thing about the Iger regime (along with tasteless price increases)...letting the Chinese have all the fun.

I am intrigued for new food options...but alot of the appeal of the new development will be if they can bring anything unique there.

As of now - no. Sanuk, sunglass hut? An apple store?

Yawn

And a gluten free vegan bakery?
How dare you... It's walt Disney world...which used to be like a real life wonka factory. I don't want to "kick back" without transfat...

You can put as much icing as you want on cardboard...still cardboard.

I digress...

My oldest daughter was about 19 when PI closed. Today she talked about how much she couldn't wait to do the PI clubs, and once she became of age, they were gone. The closest thing I think they have to PI is World Showcase and Boardwalk, because you can wonder around, order various drinks, sample various foods, and see entertainment. In my opinion, the best thing they could do to complete AK would be to develop a walking loop, so you never need to turn around, add kiosks for the areas like F&W, and put in a walking /biking trail to AKL from the top of the new land to the middle observation and campfire area of Jambo. They could even put some kiosks and shops along the trail, like boardwalk is set up. That would turn that park and resort into a highly desired location in my book. Watch the cost of AKV points soar. Just dreaming i guess.

I understand how you feel but I am really happy that they have a gluten free bakery! It may taste like cardboard to some, but to those with a wheat allergy, it still tastes like a treat! It's terrible to go on vacation and have no options for one of your children to eat cake too!

I completely understand...

My disclaimer is that my stupidity is - usually - completely tongue in cheek ;)

I feel the same way as your daughter.

My girl and I have been WDW addicts since 2013. We are very into nightlife. Pleasure Island sounds like it used to be a blast for people that enjoy nightlife. I feel the only thing WDW is missing is a good dance club in DTD or just in general (Atlantic Dance Hall is meh).

I still love walking around DTD and enjoying all the entertainment while buzzing, but it could be even better!

I feel the same way!! :sad2: It used to be my favorite store!!! Couldn't wait to go there! I loved when Radko made their ornaments!! I would put money aside just to buy my ornaments every year!! I would spend at least $100-$300 every year when I came! Now all they have is that mass produced resin junk!!! And...it is soooo overpriced!!! They hardly sell any blown glass anymore other than a few Mickey heads! They used to have really great character ornaments at reasonable prices! $20 and under. I don't think I have bought one thing in that store for years! Don't people use real ornaments anymore? I hate plastic!!!

Totally...completely...100% agree...

Especially about how ridiculously crappy it is...

The Radkos...I mean... They werent cheap anyway...the entire supply chain was making a buck or two...

And I had no problem paying for them.
Gone forever... They'll never be back.

Why? Because I was giving them profit...but not ENOUGH profit. That's ridiculous and represents how they've ruined their own merch.

Not to mention it's now mandatory that it has to be made in a sweatshop next to SDL...

You know...keep it "Inhouse"...luckily...you won't be able to see it from the park...because you can't see anything in a Chinese city.

And what's with the "simba wrapped in a blanket" plushes in the Christmas store?

I have to bother to shut my eyes when I walk past them everywhere else....I have to do it there too?

They think they're gonna wear me down, huh? ;)

I found a couple of nice things in there last time we went (we're nutcracker collectors), but honestly I was underwhelmed as well. A lot of the stuff they had is stuff I can find in any pop-up mall store in November. (My husband loved it, but he is...intense about Christmas.)

I couldn't agree more!! I still cruise through there but don't stay very long anymore!! We used to start out there and then my family would leave me there to shop and take my time. I literally would spend a couple of hours!:laughing: (I know!...I'm a bit over the top with my Christmas, as well!) Now I spend like 15 minutes and don't see anything I want!

Radko have always been fairly expensive but I didn't mind paying the price for those unique pieces!! Now those junkie plastic things cost as much as some of my Radko pieces!:scared1: I guess I will just have to treasure the pieces I have or buy them on the secondary market for 4 or 5 times the retail prices!!:sad2: And I hate to admit this...but I have!:scared::tongue:

Oh my gosh, you guys have it exactly right! I used to love shopping at DD and also at the parks because there were so many unusual or unique items everywhere. Now it's all the same crap - mass produced and often sloppy looking (the faces on some of the ornaments are horrific IMO) and they sell it all online as well (I liked shopping for things that I couldn't get anywhere else) I still manage to find something here or there but it's a much more difficult task. I remember when I used to see so many things and couldn't get them all at one time. As for Disney ornaments, I buy the Hallmark ones almost exclusively as their quality is SO much better. It's sad that they do a better job than Disney.
