Buying on a cruise ship.....

I was recently on the Disney Wonder, sitting on the edge of the pool while my daughter swam. A mom, sitting next to me appeared anxious, wanting to chat. We engaged in cruise conversation - the sun, warmth, things to do, shows, dinner, and then she asked the BIG question. "Do you know anything about this Disney Vacation Club?"

I replied that I owned at OKW and had been an owner since 2009. She then started sharing and asking questions. She had just agreed to spend $40,000 on a Disney-direct Grand Floridian contract - and had NO idea what she bought. She said she did it because she could return that day and cancel it - but the deal - a year of points was only available in the session. Honestly, she really didn't know what points were. She was nervous, curious, and surprised to learn of a resale market, lower prices, and options.

I suggested she go cancel that purchase and return home, read about DVC, and do a lot of research. I still wonder to this day how it worked out for her.

My guess is that most of new direct buyers don't fully know what they bought. Disney's image is so solid that buyers assume that Disney would only sell a product that is magical and pro buyer.

Some of the owners that we have talked to over the years rally make us say huh? Some people prefer to live in the dark and really get upset when you try to tell them the truth.

I hope she reads up. $40k is a decent chunk of change to not know what you bought!!

We bought resale in 2011 when my son was 15mo old. My older sister, a good friend, and brothers wife's parent were all dvc members although they bought direct in 2009 and 2000, respectively. The good friend bought 800pts - BLT and akl- for his wedding at the grand Floridian. He's good with money (and has a lot) so I figured this is a decent investment.

Before buying, we stayed on property for a few days, direct through Disney. It wasn't cheap. We decided that, given the people whom we know who are happy as dvc members, the cost savings over time over paying for a hotel room, plus the cost savings in the resale market, we would end up happy.

4 yrs later we bought another dvc property resale ;)

I have owned both and even with the down side of not being able to use re-sale points towards cruises (Disney Collection). You still save a lot more money in re-sale. $40,000 Do you how many re-sale points you can buy for that???

but the deal - a year of points was only available in the session

The painful part is that that isn't true. There is no deal, not anymore, that is better on a ship than on land. I assume they touted how awesome they were for giving that year's points blah blah. Yeah, they have to LOL. If you're buying a Feb use year in March (for example), it's part of what you're supposed to get. Terrific sales ploy, that it's special, but it's not special.

If we cruise on Disney again I think I'll print out the current on land offers from dvcnews.com to have to show just in case I get into such a conversation.

Kuddos to DVC marketing as you can sell ice to an eskimo on a cruise. Everything is ideal and perfect...you just want more & more.
