Debt Dumpers - 2015

I am joining in on the debt dumping for this year as well. I haven't had time to read through all of this thread, but I was wondering how close together are people closing out cards that they no longer need? I have about 6-8 smaller store cards that I've paid off over the last few months and I want to close them forever. Most of them I just opened for some type of discount, but I decided to just get down to one Visa card and use it for airline miles. I don't want to ding my credit too much-do you think closing one per month is too much? Like close one the first of every month until they are all gone or is that too close together?

:welcome: Glad you have decided to join our thread!! I agree with closing one a month isn't going to do much to your credit score. You should have no problem at all getting your car, etc. also, some stores will close your cards due to inactivity if it's been more than a year - so you could look into that. I did the same thing you did with the store cc - when I did it it was at Christmas time many years ago and those extra discounts were a seller to me!! We also have a 2014 and 2013 thread if you get time to go back and read them that may be of help. And remember - feel free to use this thread to vent too!! Lol

I always put DH's change from his pockets into a jar that I find when I do laundry & roll it it prior to vacations. I honestly think I didn't do it on our cruise in Oct, I just took out lots of quarters for toll roads. Well today it was so full, I couldn't put more in, so I rolled it tonight! $120.50 :dancer:!!! Woohoo! Plus I got $100 for my bday on Friday. I plan to put both in our savings this week due to the hit we took on paying taxes, I need to get the emergency fund stocked again.

That is a great amount in change!!! Happy belated birthday!!!

I thought about that but with all the fraud going on these days, I thought I might be better off getting rid of them sooner rather than later. Plus it will be less for me to try to manage (some cards I forgot that I even had because I haven't used them in years). Also, it will keep me from the temptation to use the cards again. I just didn't want to ding up my credit because I may need a car within a year or two.

Do what works for you, whichever way makes you comfortable. I don't worry much about fraud because of all the alerts I have set and it's easy to dispute a charge we didn't authorize.
In fact we were waiting at a bus stop at Saratoga Springs to go to Epcot last year when I got a text alert about a charge that was fraudulent. The weirdest thing is that it's an old account but the card has never ever been swiped. We accepted an offer years ago for a balance transfer at 2.99% until it's paid off.
We never used it for purchases so who knows how someone got the #. I called them and they dropped it off our bill. Easy peasy.
We all have different worries though. :goodvibes

I was just coming on here to ask the exact same question. I am hoping to get a new to me vehicle later this year or next spring so I was wondering about closing out cards once I have them paid off. Don't want to ding my credit but also don't want the fact that I have multiple cards to affect my ability to get an auto loan. What I have done so far with cards that I don't want to use anymore (even though I'm still working on paying them off) is to cut them into tiny pieces and throw them away! It's been very effective, lol.

That's a good idea. We had to buy a car earlier this month and they said that we had a lot of cards but they were all paid on time or not active so we didn't have any problems getting a loan. I'm hoping that our other car holds out for a couple more years, but I'm preparing myself that I might have to break down and buy another one soon. It's all so complicated, but I think I just want to close them to know that I am done with them permanently. I seriously didn't realize how many dumb little store cards I had until I sat down and made a list.

Hi All! :wave2: How's everyone doing?:flower3:
We're still chugging along. I'm working on the larger balances now so it feels so slow-going. In reality though it's better than I expected. We paid off our last card on 2/28 and this next card should be gone by 6/4 if all goes according to plan. 10 more weeks. The one after that will take till late November. Sometimes I feel like I spend way too much time reading over The Plan. :badpc:

In a few weeks we'll get our termite treatment done so that will be a huge weight off of me. Also the fold down attic stairs that need replacing were only half of what I had budgeted for so that's a plus. The metal hinge/spring device is bent so badly it's a miracle the spring hasn't snapped and put someone's eye out.

We're taking a little break on Easter. We'll be going to WDW for 3 nts then a quickie 4-nt cruise. No park visits or shore excursions, keeping costs down where ever we can. We just need some time to relax. We do have some old non-exp. water park visits remaining if it's warm enough but really I'm happy just to be there. :cloud9::sail:

Just keep swimming.... :fish:

You are doing a great job!! I agree, once you start to tackle the large cc it seems to take longer but once you get a thousand down and see the new amount you start to get more excited!! Enjoy your Easter vacation!!

Hi everyone, few updates; My husband ended up telling his mom the plan because she kept talking about coming to visit next year about this time of year for our over 1,000 mile husky dog race (Iditarod) and I told him he better break the news gently. It's pretty much assured that he will either get his bosses old job, or at the very least, when his old job opens up (if the guy who is in it now moves up) his former one. We also told our daughter, and she thanked us for letting her know.

Last night I just happen to be perusing a job site with the same organization I'm with now (University of Alaska) and lo and behold there is an admin assistant position, same thing I'm doing now! (well not exactly the same, but similar) and it would be a 10 month position, right now I have an 11 month position with July off. I am applying for it for sure! There is a lot of competition in the area for good jobs like that, I've also applied there before and not got positions, but I am going for it for sure anyway. What do I have to lose? At least I'm already in the system now!! It sounds like a very busy job, but mine here is too, so what the heck. It's only like 5 minutes from our house too! My husband is encouraging me to apply. It's 34% less than what I'm making here, but it's still a very good salary for that area. Oh and it's only 32 hours/wk, which is fine with me as well. The only thing that I don't like is that I think it may be a late afternoon/evening job, I'm used to day shift, but I could get used to it. I'm more of a morning person, but I'm sure I could adapt. They will start looking at applications while I'm on our trip, so ideally when we return, they would want to interview me. We are spending Friday the 17th & Saturday the 18th there (our home), then we head back here on Sunday the 19th (next month) and back to work Monday the 20th. If they wanted me to start working there in say like May, I could give my two weeks notice here, and head back there, work for a bit, and I have a feeling the two months off are June & July, so I could come back here and work for June, then head back in July like I was going to. I have it all worked out, they just need to hire me! LOL!

We got another offer in the mail for a 0% offer, this time from American Express. It's for 15 months, so I'm not sure if it's feasible to do this or not, but it's certainly better than the 12 month offer Discover was giving us. I just got a printout in the mail that I had requested of my credit history. I need to look over it better, I think we still have some cards open that I really don't want to keep, but I don't want to ding our score either. Eventually I want to get rid of some. I know there is a fine line because of the debt ratio thing. We are going to want to open a "new" car loan in the next 4-5 months when we move (see how confidant I sound?) so I need our credit report to be clear.

As much as I hate to pay the shipping, we will probably send our truck from here over there just so we won't have to get 2 car loans. This one is older, but in decent shape, and has low miles. It has a big camper shell on the back that I will want removed when we move. It creates poor visibility. My husband wanted it initially thinking we may use it here for camping, but so far we haven't. It's just the shell, not an actual camper. The payments are low, and we owe about $8900 on it. It will be paid off in the next 3 years. At that point, I would like to get a smaller vehicle for me, I don't like driving big trucks. I'm short, it's hard for me to get up into, etc. It's good enough for me to use in the meantime. Either that, or we can sell it to our son, who has been driving our old 2002 Ford Ranger. Who knows how much longer that will last. I told my husband we should sell the side by side now, that is the payment I am most wanting to get rid of. In a small town, he is afraid someone will wonder why we are selling it, he's paranoid and doesn't want anyone here finding out we are thinking of moving, but I told him it's bound to happen especially if I have to get references from my boss & other coworkers for my potential new job. I sure hope I get to the interview stage! The competition is fierce there. It's so much easier to find good jobs here!!

Yay for FRIDAYS!! I'm so glad it's Friday. I've been working my fingers to the bone this week, and trying to wrap things up before we leave on our trip. We leave on Tuesday the 7th. Very excited about that, both of us are anxious to get out of the cold & into the sun!! What a temperature change though! It's 0 degrees right now, and it will be in the 80's in Vegas. CRAZY!! This weekend I plan on pre-packing (sandals and shorts! whoo hoo!) applying for the job, start to weed out some things I don't want to haul back with us, laundry, and general cleaning.

Also, I almost forgot this important bit of news. We just got notice from our exisiting mortgage lender, Bank of America, that our loan is going to be serviced by a new company, Carrington Mortgage as of April. Have you heard of them? I never had. I called them, and they were very nice, and said we have 60 days to pay our April mortgage. I quickly called BOA & cancelled our auto pay, we pay twice a month, and apparently we are paid up for March, so that is good news. Also, our insurance & property taxes are paid up until August. (included in the monthly morgage). If you have any experience with Carrington~good or bad, please share? The one thing I don't like is that they are on EST time, that is 4 hours ahead of us. It's not that I call all the time, but I liked that BOA had my local time zone. Hopefully it will be a smooth transition, and no hiccups along the way. We are constantly getting refinance offers in the mail, probably because we qualify for that streamline one. I don't really want to start at 30 years again! I also don't want to pay more closing costs. If anyone has any thoughts on this, please share!

Here's wishing everyone continues to do good with debt paydown, to lead a happier and healthier lifestyle! HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Ok everyone, I need your help! I'm getting really nervous about this mortgage servicing switch. Here's what I found about Carrington so far:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/finance/carrington-mortgage-services.html

YIKES!!! I'm terrified that they will mess up our good credit! We have paid on time every month for years! I wonder if I should try to go through another company? We don't have tons of cash to put down on a new mortgage, but maybe because of our streamline, it wouldn't be so bad? Something's got to give!! I really don't want to have any surprises (in a bad way) with this new company. Please tell me if you've had any experience with them? I am hoping that the complaints are random and not the norm. I'm not good with reading this kind of thing, I think the worst.

THats awesome about the job posting back home! I wish you luck!

Is where you live a very remote area with no access to the mainland & that's why you can't drive your stuff back home?

I have never heard of this bank, I'm sorry. Our initial mortgage had something similar happen, but it was just bought out by another local bank, so there were no real changes other than location. Plus the new bank was a tiny bit closer to our home

As far as the current cc we are working on, I haven't transferred it over to Discover yet, but am probably going to do that today. I did end up asking for the Disney rewards to be redeemed, so they will be coming in the mail. I will save it for our eventual Disney trip for our daughter's graduation, which we hope will be after she graduates from college.

Just an FYI...the rewards points come on a card which will probably expire 12/31/16(double check that). If you aren't going to use them before the expiration date, you can use it at the Disney Store to get a gift card of equal value.

I've never heard of them but I've been passed off to 3 different mortgage companies in the past 8 years - and didn't know anything about most of them and then some I found out had crazy lawsuits put against them and had to pay back millions. I've had American home mortgage, countrywide, then American home and now I've got ocwen. I am always very nervous when I get a new one. You could give them a try but if your not happy maybe look into refinancing with another bank

I've never heard of this bank but I have to admit, these complaints sound awful. Sometimes I take complaints with a grain of salt, perhaps they contributed to their problems somehow, but so many people had never had late payments until they got dumped to this company.:sad2: Over the last 20+ years and owning 2 properties, we have had our mortgage transferred a few times without issues. Of course this was back before the days of online payments. With our last home and this one, regardless of who we originally got a mortgage with, we were somehow dumped on to Chase Mortgage. I've never had any problems with them. Whatever date I schedule a payment for, it's credited that day that I chose and within 2 days it's out of our bank account. Nothing ever feels sneaky, underhanded or like they're trying to trick us. I can easily make principal only payments online or escrow only payments too.

They make refinancing really easy. We've done it with them twice while being their mortgage customers so I don't know if that makes a difference but basically all we had to pay up front was a couple hundred $ for the appraisal. There were minimal closing costs and they rolled it all into our loan amount. Probably isn't the smartest way since it did suck out some equity but we didn't have a lot of $ available and interest rates kept dropping. Our last refi lowered our monthly payment by $260. :worship:

Don't feel like you have to start up another 30 year commitment. Why not try a 15 year? We did a while ago and it really wasn't much more per month. We adjusted pretty easily and I can't imagine ever having a 30 yr mortgage unless we were in our 20s which for us was a looong time ago. Really, I would have liked to get a 10 year mortgage this last time (early 2013) but it would have been a bit too tight for comfort for us.

Good luck with the job! I hope this all works out for you. This is so much change to deal with in all very stressful areas of life: home, work & maintaining good credit. Best wishes to you.

THats awesome about the job posting back home! I wish you luck!

Is where you live a very remote area with no access to the mainland & that's why you can't drive your stuff back home?

Yes we do live in a remote area where we can only fly out. Hence, the higher wages. As far as the job that I'm applying for, I'm sure there will be STIFF competition, I know from experience. It's a very fast growing area, the job has great benefits and I wouldn't have to commute to Anchorage. I'm still going to apply regardless! Why not? If it doesn't work out, no worries. I am keeping an open mind!

I have never heard of this bank, I'm sorry. Our initial mortgage had something similar happen, but it was just bought out by another local bank, so there were no real changes other than location. Plus the new bank was a tiny bit closer to our home

I had never heard of it before either, and all of a sudden now all those people in that link saying they got bought out by BOA, Chase Mortgage, etc.

I will check on that when it comes in, thanks! I'm heading on a trip (not to Disney) soon and I know I can get to a Disney outlet, I may just take the card!

We had this happen to us once before, actually, I forgot about it but this jogged my memory. Our loan used to be Countrywide, then BOA. Now this would be the 3rd change. I think we are going to give it a try, hopefully we won't regret it.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure that we could do a 15 yr with the type of loan we have, especially if we did a streamline. I will look into it though! It's a hard time because I hate for our credit report to take a hit from reviews from other companies since we may have to take out another car loan within a few months.

I agree, lots of changes to deal with, that's probably why I'm having trouble sleeping now! haha! All in good time. This isn't the first time we've moved, hopefully the last for a while, until we start our nomadic RV lifestyle!

What is a streamline?

What is a streamline?

  • FHA Streamline loans, designed for people who already have FHA mortgages. FHA Streamline loans have reduced paperwork, simple requirements for eligibility, and a list of features which makes FHA Streamline financing very attractive for borrowers.
FHA Streamline loans are very attractive because they don't require a credit check or income verification. If you have an FHA mortgage, you've already passed these qualification checks-you've already proven you are a good credit risk for an FHA-guaranteed loan. Because of this, you don't need to calculate a debt-to-income ratio for the new FHA Streamline loan, but it's always a good idea to have a second look at your finances for your own information.

Under FHA Streamline, you can choose not to have your home re-appraised--the original appraisal is used to calculate your loan amount. The caveat? Your new loan can't exceed the original amount you borrowed to purchase the home. You do have the option to get your property reappraised and qualify for a higher amount if the value of the property has increased. Be sure you know which you want to do before committing to the application process to make things as hassle-free as possible.

FHA Streamline loans don't require a meeting with your loan officer--you may be able to apply by phone or complete some paperwork over the Internet if your lender permits. The bank may require your actual, handwritten signature on some documents-be prepared to complete and mail in some forms before the process is officially declared finished.

We've already refi'd a few times with a conventional mortgage but does the FHA get you a better rate? Personally, I'd rather disclose my income sources and undergo a credit check if it will get us a better rate. We have nothing to hide.

We got 3% for 15 yrs at our last refi. I couldn't pass it up and I can't imagine rates will ever drop low enough to make us want to refi again. Of course stranger things have happened so I never say never.

We also didn't have to meet with the loan officer. Chase just sends a notary to our home to witness us sign all the papers in duplicate, one for us, one for them. We then have 3 days to read it over and can withdraw our signatures any time until the end of the 3rd day.
This is what they did the last 2x.
