I'm considering getting a tattoo and would like to see pics of folks who have gotten Tattoos that are Disney themed. Also, do you think it's best to get a henna tattoo first, just to see what it will look like before getting a permanent one? I'm retired so it doesn't matter where I put it on my body. Looking for ideas. All suggestions welcome! Love to see photos!

I don't have a Disney tattoo, but #2 on this page just blows my mind. If I were to get one this is one that I would love!

hi, I have 4 large tattoos, not Disney related though. Each of my tattoos have a story , personal meaning and represent a particular time in my life.

The advice I always give to people thinking about their first tattoo

1. The design
Pick a design that means something to you. Draw it out and think carefully about the colours and text. Small tattoos look cute in the first few years, but your body changes and skin and ink move, so what may look cute in year 1 could end up a blob in year 10.

2. Your body.
This is more relevant for 20 something girls but is something everyone no matter what age or gender should think about. Belly or hip tattoos look great when you are 21 and have a washboard stomach, but then what happens when a few years later you get pregnant and your skin stretches or you have to have a c section. Ok so you might not be a 20 something girl with a washboard stomach but really look at how your body changes, how your skin stretches, if you have lost or put on weight and how that has effected certain parts of your body.

3. Most definitely experiment with henna tattoos. It will give you an idea of how your design will look, how you feel about having this drawing on your body.

4. ok, you said you are retired but still you need to look at your lifestyle and the society around you. I cover mine for work, but I also cover them out of work. Yes we think society is more open minded and some places are, but where I live, having tattoos is still seen as a negative thing.

5. Research tattoo artists. Some specialise in portraits, some are general artists etc. Check their previous work portfolios, and if possible get a personal recommendation. If you see someone with a tattoo which you like ask them about it. Us tattoo people love talking about our body art :)

6. Ask the tattoo artist about how they work. Some use transfers, some work freehand.

7. Ask about after care procedures. Every tattoo artist has their own preference for healing creams and aftercare and everyone will tell you different. Just stick to the aftercare recommended by YOUR tattoo artist

Thanks, great web page! Lots of ideas. Maybe you should get the one you like? Why not?

I'd love to...But I couldn't afford to get it done to the standard I would like at the moment. That would be my main piece of advice actually, remember that when you get a tattoo you are commissioning a one-off piece of art. That's worth paying for! Working in retail I've seen so many awful cheap tattoos on members of the public!

I knew I wanted a tattoo for about 4 years before I actually got my first one. I started off by getting henna tattoos. For about 4 years in the summer I would get a henna tattoo on my arm, when I now have a real one. They would last between 10 days and 3 weeks, depending on the quality of the henna.

I knew I was ready for the real thing when I was trying to make the henna ones last and last but redrawing them myself with pens :)

Another question people ask is about the pain. It depends on how high your pain threshold is and also the location on your body. Tattoos on bony areas, like the ribs, or foot or elbow or back hurt more than fleshy areas like arms.

Ok the next bit I'm going to hide, for those who are a bit squeemish.

How A Tattoo Is Done

Basically a tattoo needle is like a fountain pen. The tattoo artist fills it with ink and then the ink is inserted into the skin dot by tiny dot in a very fast smooth action, exactly like a sewing machine needle. As the skin is being pierced by the needle, there is blood which the tattoo artist wipes away as they work. The liquid ink is inserted into the muscle tissue. The top layer of skin is basically an open wound, which scars over and dies. When this scabs away, there is fresh new skin. The liquid ink has to set which usually takes about 14 days. Day one feels like very bad sunburn, which as it heals gets really itchy.

Getting a tattoo is a really odd experience. You feel pain but at the same time a huge rush of endorphins.

Wow, super good advice! This is exactly the information I need to start looking around. You mentioned a bunch of things I hadn't thought of. Thank you so much for taking the time to outline all these considerations....very much appreciated.

Good point. I want a good quality tattoo. I am going to have to look around for a good artist, that's going to be challenging up here in the North Country! Not many choices. I may have to travel a bit. Start saving up for yours! Thanks for the really good advice.

@ThistleMae you are welcome. Feel free to ask me anything about tattoos, its a big decision and you want to do it right. Its amazing the huge amount of bad designs out there, all because people didn't research properly :)

these are both of my disney tattos. the top one i got for losing 70 lbs, its my hidden mickey on my right ankle. the reason its so red around the mickey is because that is black light ink. now that its healed you cannot see that red, and only see the glow around the mickey when its under black light or UV light.

the second tattoo is actually my first tattoo, i had it redone. the symbol means friendship and that is pixie dust and hidden mickeys in the pixie dust. i met my best friend on a disney cruise 12 years ago, im the godmother to her children and was the maid of honor in her wedding. she lives in vegas, orginially lived in cali until last year, and i have always been in ohio and we take turns visiting each other and even have gone to disney with our families together. we have matching tattoos showing how much disney effects us since it brought us together. this tattoo also has UV/black like in it around the symbol and mickeys and in the pixie dust.

before i got my tattoos i had them drawn out and looked at them both for a year and made sure i still wanted them as much as i did when i first drew them out. i still dont regret any of my tattoos and i love them both so much and have had my first one about 5 years now and my second one ive had about a year and a half.

Much obliged! As I go through my research, I'd love to have your advice. I'm thinking I want something on my hand and up my lower arm. That seems to be the best area as far as aging goes but....I have noticed that ink can get blurry as time passes and you can't make out the designs any more. Have you see this?

I had no idea there was such a thing as "black light" tattoos! That's awesome! I love that your tattoos have special meaning for you. I have to think on that a lot more. Thanks for the photo's.

I like your idea of drawing them out and sitting with them for some time. Thanks.

I had considered getting the classic black Mickey Head (like the one a poster showed up above) on my left shoulder, but my husband said, "If you brand yourself with the Mouse I'm leaving you." I think he was kidding. I THINK.

I'm now considering getting my daughter's name in Elvish.

Those tattoos are awesome! I have a full calf sleeve that's almost finished "SciFi / fantasy themed" but I had my artist put a 'hidden Mickey' in the tattoo :) Already planning my next one, Star Wars themed so it's disney too ;)
