Wishing the campsites had tents!

Like they do at San Diego Zoo's Roar and Snore.

We come from NZ and there it's not possible to bring our camping gear with us but I really think this would be a fun place to stay and experience for the girls.

Any thoughts on why they don't have an option (obviously more expensive then a bare site)?

from allears.........Can you rent camping gear at FW?

Yes. The official policy for Fort Wilderness is that rental tents and cots are only available to groups of 20 or more using Creekside Meadow, the primitive camping area. However, official policy and practice seem to differ. Individuals have rented equipment before and I've called FW myself and been told they do rent equipment to individuals if they have it available and a group hasn't already made arrangements to rent it. Tents are $30 per night, cots are $4 per night, so it's not cheap.

There's a place by me that does this, glamping, and it is sooooooo cool. Tent comes with beds and all the bedding, beautiful. We have an RV but that would be the best idea especially for Disney, would love other family to experience camping that way.

Tents are $30 per night,

I've often thought for days over around 4 that it would be cheaper to just buy a tent and ship it to FW. At the end of your trip "donate" it to another family or just leave it at the site packed up. I guess it would go into lost and found. After that I think they sell any lost and found items of value and donate the proceeds.

Or you could totally swing by one of the Targets or Walmarts using uber and buy your gear for maybe $150. It wouldn't be the top of the line, but would be do able for a week and less than renting and probably shipping.

I think REI also rents gear, but yet again it would probably be cheaper to just buy discount store stuff and donate it.

Doesn't anybody have a business doing this yet? Maybe I should consider starting it?

Of course they do for RVs but I think tents wouldn't hold up.

I don't know...we camped at a festival and someone had a business where she would set up your campsite for you and you rented it for the weekend. I think it was around $20-40 a day, depending on the tent size.

I'm just a camping gear junkie, that's what this is really all about! It would be super fun to have an excuse to equip other people, and I would enjoy helping them camp.

I know stuff is cheaper in the US but I don't think I could equip us for camping for $150, here our tent alone would be $1000 plus the camp cots (for 4 people plus a pack n play) the sleeping bags, the lights.
I'm really picturing more of a glamping thing like above and thinking there must be plenty of people who wouldn't normally camp but if you remove putting up the tent etc they could have an awesome experience

Oh yeah, I totally hear that. Some of the camps my kids go to in the summer have those set up, not quite as nice but called platform tents over here.

But here's a breakdown if you want, because I am a weirdo who loves to buy camp gear. :-)

This is all from Walmart.
Ozark Trail 10 person 3 room tent: $139
Air mattresses for four (2 twin, 1 queen): $60
Sleeping bags: $60
Lights: $40
Stove: $40

So, I was wrong, it would be more like $300, but still. Depending on how long you stayed, it still might be a decent price for the experience.

And I love my job, but I would also love setting up camps for people! It is one of my favorite things to do.

1) I would recommend the renting of a "pop up" RV.
2) Pretty close to "tent" camping.
3) And, it would be set-uo and taken-down for you.
4) Several companies around Orlando do this.

Wow stuff is way cheaper over there, here a single sleeping bag wold be over $100!

It may be cheaper. Here is a link to a lovely $500 sleeping bag. That same site does also have a number of bags for under $100.

It kind of depends on what you need/want. WalMarts are great for cheapest possible. Sometimes "cheapest" means price. Sometimes it's quality. Usually a little of both. ::yes::

We were there last week in Loop 2000 and there were a couple of sites with Disney rented tents on them. At first we thought our neighbors had abandoned all their gear and Disney was getting rid of it, but the nice gentlemen taking them down told me they were Disney property. They are nice tents, tall, and with sturdy looking canvas. The same tents were used by a couple of groups in the primitive area but we noticed them sprinkled throughout the loop in use by people that weren't part of the groups (not there at the same time).

What kind of tent are buying we are talking about something like this.

Yep exactly. I have a North Face tent myself that my family takes, but if I needed one for a week or two, I think the cheapo from WM would work fine. We had an ozark trail canopy for years. It was a pain to put up, but kept the rain off our meals just like a pricey brand.

The exchange rate is some of this. The conversion today is NZD 1:0.76 USD. That means a $500 NZD tent would be $379 USD. It still make it an expensive tent, but I think we are talking REI vs WalMart quality.

But, absolutely, the $150 tent should last a week or two... Maybe even a month or two. :yay:

We use cheaper properly designed tents as our regular tents.

One from Walmart, one that was a promo gift my BIL got from I think Winnebago. Both have been used years and have never leaked.
