How have your experiences with a very late resort arrival been?

I had a miserable time getting there one year due to a snowstorm. Our flight was cancelled and the one they re-booked us on was cancelled, but we did finally leave very late in the day. I just called the hotel and let them know what was going on and that we would be a very late arrival. They put a note in the computer and we had a wonderful room waiting when we got there. The airline also lost our bags and the front desk cast members were amazing in notifying us when they arrived and had them waiting in our room. I think it's just a great staff member and little luck sometimes.

We have only arrived late once. It was a Thursday this past dec....the 11th I believe. We were staying club level at the yc and this was our experience:

1. Long wait for me
2. Many resorts stopped at along the way and I believe we were last
3. They were waiting for us at arrival and took us up to the check in.
4. We were given drinks upon arrival as was our five year old
5. There were several cms who were really going out of their way to entertain our son and make sure everything was pleasant
6. I had booked lagoon/water view cl room and requested a room close to the lounge. Our room was no where near the lounge. Hands down furthest from the lounge of all our stays at any club level or concierge stay anywhere.
7. We were called almost instantly and our luggage was brought up, nice because we wanted to go to bed.

We're not landing at MCO until 11:45 PM and this is making me a little nervous. How is the Magical Express at that time? We were told it ran all night long.

Well, now I'm nervous about getting in late to POR. (I wanted an earlier flight, but BF wanted to leave after work and we took the cheapest at 7:30PM). I know there's the fax requests but it sounds like if they accommodate those requests, they might just end up giving it to another person who gets in earlier. I know you can check in super early though online - if you check in online and are given your room number, will they not reassign?

You can check in online at 60 days out. You won't get your room number until you room is ready on arrival day.

Actually, POR is a participant in direct-to-room (aka "streamlined") check-in where they WILL text you your room number when its ready and you can skip going to the front desk all together. It's my understanding that they can't change your room out once they text it to you. BUT they do tend to text you your room number after they've confirmed you're actually en route - when you check into DME at the airport or when you pass through parking lot security if you're driving. They hold this info back until you are on the way so they have the leeway to move rooms around in case you end up being a no show. So unfortunately this probably wouldn't help much either.

Magical Express is 24/7 so you'll have no problem there. You will need to visit baggage claim and get your own luggage though, as Magical Express does not collect and deliver luggage for flights arriving after 10pm. I would also expect to be sitting on the bus for a bit waiting for more people to trickle in and fill up the bus. We arrived during a very slow time at the airport and sat for about 35 minutes on the bus before we finally left with the bus 3/4 full.

Our last trip we had a flight delay and ended up arriving about 1am. We were at the Poly and I figured there was no way we would get our room request that I had done during online check in. I had asked for one of the buildings near the main pool with a pool side view, 3rd floor. We got EXACTLY what I requested. It was so nice after that long, rotten time getting there to find that our perfect room was ready and waiting for us!

So when will they send it if your doing a split stay, once you've checked out? If so, I would think going down and actually doing it in person would show in the system faster than express checkout.

We had 2 experiences when we traveled with family groups with multiple rooms when our assigned room was changed between when the first room checked in early in the day and when we checked in later in the day. When the first room checked in they inquired about the other rooms in our group, and while they (of course) could not be told the exact room numbers were told the buildings (this was POR). Then, we checked in probably8 hrs later and were put in a different building which was also alligator bayou instead of one of the mansion buildings where the other 3 rooms in our group were. My assumption is that people checking in before us were unhappy with their rooms, so since we had not checked in yet they gave them our preassigned room (despite being linked to 3 other rooms). They were able to get us a room in the same building as our family, so we probably bumped someone else! This same scenario happened on 2 different trips. I have no experience with working at a front desk of a hotel, but I do always wonder why people are so adamant that their blocked out room will definitely be there when they check in super late. I feel rather confident that unless you have some special situation, if there is an irate or even irritated guest standing at the front desk wanting a different room, and the room you are "assigned" to is still empty, they will give that current guest the room and move your assigned one. It just makes sense. I would expect it, and honestly if I were checking in early and had requests I would be pretty ticked off to find out that there were tons of rooms that met my requests empty that would work, but they were being held for someone coming in after me. As long as they are the same room category, I would expect to be able to get the room. FIrst come first serve. This is why we always stayed offsite the first night and checked in very early in the AM when I was young and we drove (well, plus my parents were cheap!). We made it clear we didn't want a room that was necessarily ready early, we wanted a room that met our requests. Most of the time we were successful with most of the requests, and we did have quite a few (most often at POR, back before online check in, tons of bookable views, preferred rooms, etc). I also have had many experiences when I checked into a Disney hotel and did not have my requests met with the initial room assignment, but after a varied amount of back and forth was able to get a room that met my requests. Sometimes it simply took me asking, other times they had to check with the room assigner or supervisor and it was quite an ordeal, and once we did move in the morning from what we found out was classified as an obstructed view. Only one time out of 40 trips were we just flat our not able to have any of our requests met. I would like to say we decided we liked the location we got better, and always requested it in the future, but that was definitely not the case. However, it was still a great trip. I guess that was a long winded way for me to say that, while it is not from a bad personal experience, I do think you have a good chance of getting less that desirable room when you check in super late! Also, sorry about the run on paragraph. For some reason the computer will not let me start a new paragraph, and I do not want to start this over again!

Good question. I don't do split stays so I haven't paid much mind to the posts on this topic. I would suspect you're right in that checking out at the front desk would show up quicker than express.

Your chances of getting a good room are higher earlier in the day. Late arrivals have a higher percentage of poorly located rooms, IME. We have been going since 1971, often multiple times per year and almost always late arrivals (after 9 pm). WE often have to change rooms the next morning if we have room requests that are important to us. If the resort is full, there are very few rooms not occupied by the time that we arrive. The CM on the desk can't move you to a better room if there isn't one available. (Yes, they will move people that are standing there into your preassigned room - but not always. They have done this for and to me. They have also refused to put me in a room that I knew was vacant because it was being held for someone arriving later.) As a result, we sometimes opt for a value resort for arrival night and move in the morning. If you are likely to have to move anyway you might as well save a few $$$ in the process.

We did a little bit of a split stay last week with one night at POR, then moving to BLT for the remainder of our trip. On the morning we moved, I got a text a little after 8am saying my room at BLT was not quite ready yet. Had noted early arrival time via online check-in, since we would be transferring from within WDW. Still did not get the room ready text until about 4:15pm.

Since we're moving to a Universal hotel after 3 days, and since we got a pretty good rate on our BWI room, we don't want to stay somewhere else the first night, otherwise we'd just stay at the MCO Hyatt again. Staying at 3 different hotels on a 6 night vacation just isn't my cup of tea. Plus, as soon as we get up we want to head over to DHS for SWW, so dealing with switching resorts will burn valuable time.

On our first ever trip to Disneyworld in 2010, we arrived at midnight at POR. We requested a room close to a pool and bus stop. Both requests were met and the CM was very nice. We had a Garden Grocer order and they brought that out and drove us to our room in one of the golf carts.

We arrived late twice---once at the Poly and once at AKL. The people at AKL were great. Incredibly friendly CMs had us in our CL room with birthday buttons with no problem at all. At the Poly, it was a different story. We arrived after midnight because our flight had been delayed and our car service did not show up at MCO. We waited an hour before giving up and hiring a cab. We arrived late and tired. We did not get our room request---OK, it's only a request, I get it----but the CM was snarky and said we should have expected not to get it since we arrived so late. It wasn't exactly a magical welcome after such a long trip.

I just had a thought. If we will be transferring from POR to WL, standard room, maybe we would have a better chance of getting an upgrade if we check in later since there are so few standard rooms and they sometimes over book them.

Or you could be moved to a different resort. Or just given a not so great room. I wouldn't delay checking in in the hopes of snagging an upgrade.
