Recently got a WestJet Credit Card, the one with the $99 companion flight. Wondering how this works? Are you able to use the WestJet dollars towards your own flight when redeeming the $99 companion flight? Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You have one year to use your $99 flight, and you have to be on the flight with your companion. You can use your westjet $ for your flight and the $99 flight if you have enough, and only pay the taxes on both flights. I have done this myself quite a few times. I love it!

do you have to call to book flights?

You have to call to use your $99 companion flight. If you are just using WJ $ you can do it online. :)

thanks ... hoping this will help cut cost, as it is expensive to fly from toronto ... have debated flying from buffalo but with only two flying the savings aren't as good

I absolutely love my WestJet MasterCard and have used the $99 companion fare annually since its inception. I like to book the Plus fares, since the chance is the greatest that they will go down in price after purchasing and there is no change fee to switch it to a cheaper Econo ticket. I second the poster who confirmed that you have to call in, and yes, you can absolutely use your WJ$ towards the cost of all except taxes and fees!

I decided yesterday to dump my Scotia Visa in favour of this one,,applied and accepted.
They said two weeks but I am betting I get it sooner.
I paid $70.00 USD to Air Canada this past March just for one checked bag so having one free checked bag (WJ) is great.
I also found out that No Frills and Costco and Canadian Tire accept Mastercard , they don't accept Visa, three places I like to shop.
I am close to Toronto Airport so it makes sense for me to fly out of YYZ or Hamilton( YHM).
The Campanion fee makes it easier to take a friend or Grandaughter.
Best Wishes

Unless this is very recent, Canadian Tire accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express both online and in store. Their store credit card is a Mastercard.

Costco accepts at least Visa and Mastercard online. But for credit cards, only Mastercard in store (used to be AMEX but that contract ended and they have adopted MC now).

Thank you for the link to the RBC WestJet card page.

Can you use teh $99 companion for a Plus fare ?

Yes, you can, I've done it multiple times already :). The only catch is that both fares have to be the same, so you couldn't have one fare at Econo at the other Plus, for example.

I just did this for the first time, and used WestJet dollars to pay for both the non-tax portion of my flight and the companion ticket. It was fine, but there were a couple of caveats that I don't think have been mentioned here:
  • Any additional tickets (beyond the cardholder/companion pair) have to be booked as a separate reservation. In my case, I am travelling alone with my two kids. My oldest is 9. They were able to book my younger child as my companion, and my 9yo on her own reservation, with a note cross-linking her reservation to mine so that they would know she was travelling under my responsibility. I got the sense that if I had two younger children (ie. too young to travel as an unaccompanied minor), this might have been a problem. Of course at check-in I will have to manage two separate reservations and make sure our seats are together, which is a minor inconvenience, but not a huge deal.
  • Due to using WJ dollars, each ticket had to be processed as a separate payment (even the two tickets booked on the same reservation).
  • The whole process was pretty slow. Apparently processing the WestJet dollars slows things down, plus then you have to give your credit card information multiple times, and they have to do the two reservations, etc. Again, it was fine - just don't do it when you're in a hurry. On the upside, since we all had WestJet Rewards numbers I only had to give the numbers and we didn't have to go through the whole name/address/phone number routine.
Aside from the slightly painful phone call, I am really pleased. I've only had the card since October, and paid just over $500 out-of-pocket (mostly taxes and fees) for what would have otherwise been a $1300 reservation. Not bad.
