How many night does everyone cook at their site?

Since we go for 2 weeks we do not plan to cook in the whole time. It is usually 3 families, but even if it was just myself, my GF and her kids it would be similar. Breakfast is usually in, but there is always at least one trip to trails end. Most of the time cold breakfast, every now and then I make a hot breakfast as some have seen here. Lunch is either brown bagged or picked up in the parks, and dinners are usually 50% of the time cooked in. I prefer tested crock pot meals as they are easiest to prepare. But that does not mean I wont grill up some burgers or steaks on some nights.

It is more expensive the way we do meals, but it also allows us to enjoy the trip and our time in the parks. But we do budget for this so we have the money to handle it.

We usually eat one to two meals at our site when we are at FW. Partly because I am totally cheap but partly because we enjoy the time at our site and enjoy relaxing a bit there. We almost always eat at Trails End for one dinner either near the beginning or end of our stay. The food is good and it is relatively inexpensive considering it is on property. We try to have our menu planned in advance and try really hard to not over pack. It is always a pain in the neck to have to bring back a tone of extra food and like I said I'm cheap so I don't throw anything out! :donald:

When we go down, we cook at the site maybe 4 -5 nights out of 10. I make breakfast every morning, pack a small bag for snacks then the kids eat popcorn while in the parks. One DD would buy a ham leg ( it's a turkey leg, but taste like ham ) and share with our other DD. If we get hungry around lunch time, we would get counter service, then the dinners would be off site somewhere.

Trying to figure out how to keep frozen stuff "frozen" for the trip down! We have a popup so would it be best to fill a cooler of ice put food in and in the popup,it's 12hr drive for us? We do have a fridge/freezer for after we get there.

I have used dry ice before for a trip back home from Fl. We purchased 2 lbs. in Melbourne, drove to Destin Fl. for 2 days and then went home 24 hr. drive. When we arrived home everything was still froze solid and we left the dry ice in the cooler and it lasted another 2 days. If you go the dry ice route, make sure you are just using it for your frozen foods. The place I bought mine said I had better take my beer bottles out of the cooler.

We usually bring a cooler empty and stop at a supermarket before we get to FW to get ice and all the frozen goods we need. the ice will keep everything cold enough until you get the camper up and the freezer cooled down.

We cooked several times at the camp site during the last couple of trips to FW. The first time we went in 2012, my dad demonstrated the lost art of charcoal grilling. We enjoyed that experience so much it made it back on the menus for the next trip in 2014. The last time we were there in November, we cooked out probably 4 or 5 times. It was nice to be at the picnic table, talking about the day's events and what to do about tomorrow.
