Is the food really THAT bad?

My husband and I are big Disney fans and have gone on 4 trips in the last 6 years and I was planning a fifth for next year. We've always found the food to be quite good with the exception of one or two meals. I've been reading so many recent comments on the boards about how food is bad compared to people's last trip and that there's no magic anymore. Food is very important to my husband while on a holiday. It's making me nervous to book another trip. Is it really THAT bad?

Not all the reviews are like that. Not sure which ones you are reading.

There is still magic.

Overall my last few trips have been pretty decent food wise & for the most part I've been happy.

We always overall have excellent food at WDW!! There is still magic everywhere, but nothing is perfect, even at WDW. Consistent hits for us have been Yak & Yeti, Sanna, Yachtsman, Ohana to name a few.

I've always had good food too but a lot of people have been saying it's gone downhill in the last year and I haven't been there since.

My husband and I both thought the food was great on our last trip. I'm not too sure about all the bad reviews.

Granted, we haven't been within the past year but food can be hit and miss anywhere. I think people need to be in the mindset of the type of food being served; if it's a quick service or mass produced type of food ... expect that kind and judge the food to other mass produced food and not compare to a fancy, custom cooked meal.

I feel like the food has improved. for us, for a while, they were eh but we have been enjoying our meals much more in the past two years.

We are not foodies we like bar food/chain restaurants ie Chili's, Moe's, Ruby Tuesdays, Five Guys. With that being said the food at Disney is tolerable. It is what it is. If we went to a restaurant outside of the Disney bubble and we were served this food, we wouldn't go back. There are some exceptions ie Via Napoli or Wolf Gang Pucks. I don't think the food quality is declining, it has been this way for the last 10 years we have been going.

Yes, it was, in our limited experience. This was our third trip, last in 2010, and we had previously enjoyed the food. The quick service places now are awful. Everything is premade, frozen / boxed and reheated. 90% of the time I would say the quick service food was awful, the other 10% I would call fair but not good. It wasn't expectations either. I would have been happy with a subway style fresh sandwhich, but nothing like that exists. I get the feeling it's all mass made at a central facility, packaged and trucked in. If you plan on eating quick service I would consider getting groceries and bringing a sandwhich.

Out table service inside disney was limited to akerhaus. The food was good, but we were really rushed through. The waiter wanted our drink and food orders before we had even had a chance to pick up the menus. He stood there while we were sitting, book open, what would you like. It was odd. And the food is a little eclectic, being Norway and all.

If you have a car, we found a great little place when we went for a drive. It's called Dexters, it's in windmere (an upscale little community, nice area. My son was in heaven after spotting a couple of porches lol). That was easily our best (and cheapest) meal all week lol.

We have many very good dining experiences at WDW, and a couple not so good. With that being said it is very hard to listen to other people's reviews, people that have a not so good experience are more likely to leave a negative review rather than people having a good experience leaving a positive one. Have a wonderful trip no worries

My 16 year old DS loves Ohana, and despite all of the mixed reviews it has been getting lately it was one of our favorite meals on our last trip!!!

I would say that most (not all) of the cs restaurants are very typical of most fast food places found outside of WDW; not very good. I'm not a big fan of fast food. I just don't get into pieces parts chicken nuggets, frozen pizza, and frozen beef patties. As for most of the ts restaurants; I have had many very good meals at them and a few not so good. Overall, I would say it is decent. I think the biggest complaint I read here on the DIS is from those who say, "for the price I pay for the food at Disney I expect it to be on par with the top restaurants at home for the same money". The truth is, any tourist destination is ALWAYS going to have inflated costs and Disney is no exception. I'm not saying this because I drink the Disney Kool-Aid, but I'm saying this from experience. Go to Cedar Point, Six Flags, Atlantis Resort (Nassau) a professional sporting event, it is not cheap at all. Do I think there is room for improvement? Yes. But do I think it is aweful? No.

For the price I pay I expect it to be at least as good as Chili's or someplace like that. I expect a tourist markup, but lately it's been 'mark up with cutback' not a good combo. I have pretty much quit eating at most of the Disney locations.

It isn't THAT bad. Is the food as good as I remember it being 20 years ago? No. But, I have found that people like to be whiney and snobbish on some food reviews. To be honest, every restaurant people rave about, is meh to me. The restaurants I love? Get bad reviews here. My main issues with Disney restaurants tend to be because of service, however. The only restaurants that I disklike with a passion are the CS at HS, Flame Tree BBQ, and WCC. I have several others I didn't care for, but would give another try. My opinions though are different from the next and don't amount to a hill of beans. My best advice is: 1. Read menus 2. Stay away from reviews and 3. Don't allow food to control your wonderful vacation! :)

I wouldn't let the negative reviews worry you. At times you'll notice a string of bad reviews. Yes, we've had meals that missed the mark. You have that traveling anywhere but overall we've continued to have wonderful meals over the course of the past 10 years traveling to WDW. The meals we had on our trip this past June were the best we've had. I think the key is looking a menus fro the various restaurants and see what appeals to you and be willing to try new things.

^This^.

We have lowered our expectations for Signature meals and no longer come away disappointed.

. . . We've always found the food to be quite good . . . so many recent comments on the boards about how food is bad . . . Is it really THAT bad?

1) There are a couple of places that I would consider as serving "bad" food.
2) Most are "good", and just a few are "very good".
3) Remember,
. . . this is a huge people-draw and must accommodate many different tastes and appetites
. . . the food is designed to appeal to the masses, and thus, is not as tasty or unique as most off-site eateries
. . . the DDP has a defined reimbursement to the eateries, and eateries must keep a lid on expenses in order to make acceptable profits
. . . constrained reimbursements for a whole year makes eateries prepare cheaper food to allow for forthcoming vendor price increases
4) In other words,
. . . the dining quality is diminishing
. . . the dining is not generally "bad", just leaning more toward "mediocre

NOTE: Forgetting the excuse of many that high prices are acceptable "because it is Disney", in most cases, the food quality does not warrant the high food prices.

I have a hard time with the reviews. I try to think of the food separately From the price, which wouldn't make sense to some. In saying "is this food good?" I think I personally can be a little more objective than when answering "is this dining experience worth the $$". I know we're paying a big markup, so I'm just trying to evaluate the food itself.

I want my food to be hot, tasty, well-presented, and plentiful. I found that to still be true on my recent trip. At home, with our kids, I don't eat at many fancy restaurants (mostly chains or a casual mom& pop place). My Disney entrees were juicy not dry, buffets were clean and refilled, presentation was good (food not slopped on a plate), veggies were not overcooked, cold salads were cold and crisp. I'm sure a foodie would criticize lack of creativity or "zing" but I don't expect anything fancy out of mashed potatoes at a place whose menu is clearly home style food. I love Boma and found it very unique to other disney dining, but I've never been to Africa, so maybe it is bland by comparison as some reviewers say. This trip we enjoyed dinners at Coral Reef, CRT, Boma, Chef Mickey, Akershus breakfast, BOG lunch. CS at Sunshine seasons, ABC commissary, Gasparilla Grill at Grand Floridian, pop food court, Pizzafari at AK (fine, but my most boring meal of the trip).

This is not to be critical of other people's reviews, just saying if your style and expectations match mine I think you'll still be happy with the food. (Now, obviously I think it's worth my vacation dollars to go to these places, but that's a whole other discussion in my mind!)

I guess I'll just say that if I ever go back to WDW, after my recent weekend trip I'll be dining off-site.

Also: some people are more into food than others. I'm a foodie. This doesn't make me 'whiny or snobbish'. It means I get excited about food and I've eaten at a lot of restaurants, and I can tell the difference between good/bad ingredients and preparation. I'm just as happy eating a really good but CHEAP meal as I am eating a really good expensive meal.

Corollary: I don't care that much about photography. I have an inexpensive Nikon that is almost but not quite a 'one shot'. I know there are people here with multi-thousand dollar cameras and GoPros and whatever. I don't consider them 'snobbish' because they would consider my little Nikon inferior. They just have a greater interest in, and knowledge of, photography than I do.
