First Solo Trip Oct 23-Nov 6, 2015 (Yes, 2 weeks!)

I booked my first WDW solo trip ever and it will be for 2 weeks (Oct 23 - Nov 6, 2015). I've been thinking about going back to WDW since I came back from my last trip in Dec 2014. That trip was together with my wife who isn't a big Disney fan. Last time we went before that Dec 2014 trip was in 1997.
I've been dying to go back since that day but knew the odds were low. My wife just doesn't get why WDW is so magical and for her it's just another theme park :confused3 In fact she doesn’t even call it theme park but amusement park. I hate it when she does that because it is so much more than that.

It's difficult for us to go on vacation together because we have a few dogs and because they mean the world to us we are not too keen on letting other people take care of them. Normally we go on vacation in Austria and take the dogs with us. We do some hiking in the mountains together with the dogs which we and they greatly enjoy. My wife also enjoys going to dog shows and is often weekends away for this. I think it’s great that she enjoys this hobby of her so I support her and encourage her to keep doing this. She appreciates this and knows that I love going to WDW so that’s why she agreed to go to WDW together. We went in Dec 2014 and stayed at Port Orleans Riverside. AK wasn’t open yet last time we went so we decided we would need 2 weeks to see all 4 parks. It would be a once in a lifetime experience and probably the last time we went so we had to see it all.

I think it’s great that my wife supports me and does something that really isn’t her thing though I must say I asked her to ”please do not destroy my experience” because I know she can become naggy. I did everything to make it as enjoyable as possible for her. She loves zoos so we spent 4 days in AK. I booked the Wild Africa Trek which was great. We originally would do quick service only but I upgraded to the regular dining plan and made a lot of great ADRs. I did pay the dining plan upgrade and the Wild Africa Trek out of my own pocket. She also loves the Xmas atmosphere so that’s why we went in Dec and did MVMCP as well. What I’m trying to say is that we both tried to do our best for the other party to make the vacation as enjoyable as possible. My wife doing a trip that really isn’t her thing and me trying for example to pace things down by having table service instead of quick service. But the thing is that you inevitably have to compromise somewhere. My wife said – and I’m sure she means it – that she had a great vacation. So mission accomplished because I had a great vacation as well besides …

We didn’t do it all. We were there for 2 weeks and we didn’t see everything. This would be once in a lifetime and I didn’t see it all. So I constantly have this feeling that I have some unfinished business to do in WDW. We skipped some attractions because my wife didn’t want to do them because the attractions were not for us as she calls it (for kids). Some of the attractions we didn’t do:
Afternoon Parade, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Country Bear Jamboree, Enchanted Tales with Belle, Liberty Square Riverboat, Mad Tea Party, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Tomorrowland Speedway, PeopleMover, Tom Sawyer Island, Magic of Disney Animation, Toy Story Midway Mania, Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, Voyage of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast-Live on Stage, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo – The Musical.

Another thing is that I think the MK is the most magical after dark. Doing the rides when it’s dark makes for a whole other experience. Well, after an AK day we went to MK because we had Fastpasses for MSEP and Wishes. It was on a saturday and EMH until 03.00 am. After Wishes my wife thought that I wanted to leave the park. Leaving the park? Not that I wanted to stay until 03.00 am but I wanted to do some rides. So we did Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain. I love Splash Mountain but my wife was afraid to get wet. Granted it was 11.00 pm in Dec but it was a warm day and we were still walking in our T-shirts. So eventually we did ride it and got wet and she was not amused. Splash Mountain is my favourite ride but it just isn’t so much fun to do it with someone that doesn’t enjoy it. Sometimes I’m jealous if I see how much fun other couples are having.

The moral of this story (or rant) is: If you do WDW then do it with someone who loves it just as much as you or else do it alone!

2 Weeks is a long time to be on your own and I’m sure that sometimes I will feel lonely. I’m also a kind of shy and introverted person but after reading all the stories on the forum I’m sure I’ll manage. I only have to decide if I’m going to do quick service or table service. I read that for most people eating solo is one of the hardest things to do.

If you have some tips or encouraging words for my upcoming trip then please let me know :goodvibes

I totally understand! I have been wanting to go back since I was just there in November so I booked my own stay for November 5-14th at POFQ. It is so hard to get others on board, so I actually am looking forward to doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. I do have a friend going around the same time so we will be meeting up. When I went with my sister, BIL, mom and stepdad in November, we had a great trip BUT I had the most amazing times when I went off on my own and did my own thing. So I said what the heck, my sisters having a baby soon so they aren't going back this year so I will just go. I booked my airfare 2 nights ago- $126 roundtrip, non-stop flights! SCORE! 10 days will be my longest trip to Disney World! I cannot wait!

You will have an amazing time! I have never heard anything bad about solo trips. Those are the trips people appreciate the most because they had no one else to please but themselves! Enjoy it! :thumbsup2

Thank you tinkerbella16 :)

Congrats on the great airfare price. I see that when you start your trip my vacation has just ended. Oh, wait. Did I mention that last week I bought an Annual Pass voucher? I'm planning another 2 weeks in 2016 probably in Sept/Oct. Buying an AP is the cheapest ticket option and it's great that you can do 2 trips in one year this way.

Yeah, I'm on a mission and nobody's gonna stop me now pirate:

Hi John!

I have gone to Disney solo a few times--mostly because I come for the races, so I don't get to pick the dates, and the dates of the races tend to be times when I can't take my kids out of school, so my husband stays home with them.

For dining, I usually will sit at the bar, if the restaurant has one. Generally there have been other "solo" people there, or the bar tender, or even people in a couple or group that are willing to talk to a stranger. :)
Typically, I will eat outside the parks for this--if I am inside the parks I tend to eat at a counter service. I did go to the wine bar in the Italy section of Epcot. They seated me at a couch (by myself) and I ordered a flight of wine and a light meat dish. The waiter was very nice and I didn't feel awkward at all.

Another place I like to dine solo is Raglan Road in Downtown Disney. I sit at the bar and watch the Irish dancers. It's great! :thumbsup2

I hope you have a fabulous trip!

Hey John:

Good for you for taking that SOLO leap. Yes, its too bad when people don't get our Disney magic obsession. My obsession is leading me to go SOLO from Oct 28 to Nov 4th - so i will be there while you are there. I will be looking for someone to share a meal or attraction / parade with from time to time. My dates are not definite yet (not booked - wont book until June probably) - but if so perhaps we can meet up. I have clicked on to FOLLOW your posts if you don't mind.

In any event... have a great time!

How exciting! I'm lucky that my husband and children love Disney just like I do (my oldest daughter, especially) - but, still, I'm looking forward to my solo trip in September!!

Hey LadyDiznee:

That would be great. It's nice to be able to do things on your own but it's also nice to be able to talk to someone besides CM's and waitresses from time to time. Eating solo will be my biggest challenge so sharing a meal sounds like a lot of fun :) Is there any restaurant you have always wanted to try but never did because the people in your party didn't like it?

I will follow your posts too and hope your dates don't change :) I see your last trip was 15 years ago. Mine was 17 years ago before my trip in 2014. You will have such a blast.

Wow, this is a great thread to come to when planning a solo trip....lots of ideas. It's great John...that you and LadyDiznee may share a meal or two. I am planning a solo trip next year, this year (November) I'm bringing a friend who has never been! We are both in our 60's. He's great fun and will try anything....so it should be a magical trip. I look forward to reading all of the posts in here. When I was there in 2013, I brought my granddaughter and her boyfriend. I spend most days on my own except for dinners. It was great to catch up at dinner time and just talk about our day! That will be the hardest part for me....so I love the different suggestions for dining. Sitting at the bar is definitely one way to go. I also think I will reserve at my favorite resorts, even when solo. I can bring my ipad, sit, relax and figure out my evening or next day plans on my calendar. In 2013, I talked with a woman in the pool, everyday. She and I both got up early, so she shared her experiences with me. It was nice. There are people everywhere, excited to chat in lines....afterall we all have to wait! I loved the freedom I had during the day. I never felt alone. But...I do wonder if I am there totally by myself whether there will be a missing element! It's just too hard to plan around other people's job, interests and family. I'm glad you and your wife have figured it out. Your relationship will be stronger for it. Have a Blast! See Everything! And go back again. You're a kid at heart, like the rest of us here. :jester:

Hey John D:

Actually there a quite a number of restaurants that I will want to try that I have never been to. My former husband and I only did our fine dining only once at California Grill / Contemporary (for our anniversary) and we would do our Character breakfast at every year at the Garden Grill - Epcot - even though we werent fond of the food. This trip I really want to do Ohana... not so much because I want to try the restaurant but because i am a Lilo and Stitch fan and the Ohana character breakfast is the only place I am guaranteed to see them.

Let's keep in touch and I will check through my Birnbaum book this weekend to see which restaurants are my favorite choices. Give my a lists of your faves and I'll give yo a list of mine and we can compromise a meet. Moreover... don't know if you do parades but I definitely DO. I'd love a partner for one of the parades.

I know that Crystal Palace has a character breakfast and I've never eaten at Crystal Palace before. Perhaps we can do a breakfast there one morning. We are following each other - so lets stay in touch. In the meantime before October I'm certain we may even find at least one more person who is bound to be going Solo on our dates! I'll message you with my restaurant list shortly!

Peace and Blessings!

Hey LadyDiznee :)

The only time I did TS was last year and I used wdwinfo.com a lot to do research. There are so many options that it's not easy to make a choice. Please be aware that for the really popular ones like Be Our Guest, California Grill, Cinderella's Royal Table, to name but a few, you have to make dining reservations 180 days in advance. So you might be too late for the really popular ones if you are booking your stay in June. I can start making ADRs April 26th so if we select a restaurant then perhaps it would be wise to let me make the reservation. They can always be cancelled free of charge anyway.

I have some favorite restaurants and there are some on my wishlist as well. California Grill for example is on my wishlist. I did Garden Grill too but that's because I love Chip & Dale. I never did Ohana or Crystal Palace but it would be nice to try one of them. I have never visited the Polonesian before so it would be nice to eat over there. I'll message you a list with my faves shortly.

I do love parades. I love MSEP and I definitely want to see the afternoon parade this year. Missed that one last year. I also loved the Chrismas Parade. I plan to visit MNSSHP as well and see the Boo-To-You parade.

We'll keep in touch :)

Hey Thistlemae. I love your post. Reading the postings on this forum actually convinced me to do a solo trip as I have only read positive things about solo trips. I think we all need someone to share our experiences with from time to time. You can have fun on your own but it's nice to be able to talk about the fun you had as well :) And we all share the same passion.

Great John. Thanks for the info.
I will indeed start booking some of them. I made up a partial list.
Ive done Calif Grill and loved it - so thats sstill on the list, and Crystal Palace. I am not a fan of GARDEN GRILLs food but I too love chip and dale. The service was great and the character greetings were great. So since it's been 15 years I am not opposed to doing GARDEN GRILL again... because its also an easy location - along with Crystal palace.

There are also some other things I want to make sure I try that arent sit down places.... Like Dole Whip at Aloha Isles, Cronut at Epcots Refreshment Port near Canada and the cinnamon roll at Gastons.

Everyone keeps talking about Raglan Road at DTD so i will want to try that as well.

Yep, let's keep in touch. You are right with regard to the Restaurants... i need to get them booked... I can always cancel! We can even plan out parades or fireworks in advance. I will message you sometime between today and Sunday. I work a lot at my computer when at home and cant say for sure EXACTLY when i will make contact with you. I am at work right now and while I do have down time I dont care if I rush one of these posts but I dont want to RUSH any of m personal interactions.

Disney Blessings!

Ohana breakfast is fantastic! Its so relaxing, the food comes to you, so all you do is sit and wait for characters to come by. The view is very nice and the restaurant is so pretty during the day. The food at ohana is wonderful and its all you can eat so you can stuff yourself silly! Crystal Palace was pretty good thou. I especially love the breakfast. Nice variety, great food, at a reasonable price (considering its a character buffet anyway!).

Cali Grill is wonderful. Great food, beautiful ambiance and view!
