Off site campground

Well we really wanted to take a two week vacation at the Fort in our camper at then end of July/Early August, but I still can't commit to making reservations yet (probably at least another month away) but I've been checking the site to keep an eye on what's open. I haven't gotten anything in the last couple of weeks so I'm sure I'm out of luck and it's all booked up.

Our other option is to camp off site (as of now they still have spots at least at the KOA). I ran the numbers and it actually saves us a nice chunk of change, and one camp ground even offers to buy tickets to the world. I was wondering if anyone has stayed at the Orlando KOA or Tropical Palms and what was the experience like.

We have stayed at Tropical Palms and it's ok, it's not Disney, but a cheaper alternative. Easy drive to Disney, but in your price factor now add the parking fee per day also, unless you hold a AP. I would plan to spend the whole day at the park as now you do not have the ease of going back to the camper as quick for a meal or break, just things to also consider. Have fun and good luck with your plans.

Yeah I factored the parking in and know I'd be paying for some extra meals in the park now, I still think it would be a little cheaper than staying at the fort if we ate a lot in the parks. we just really wanted to stay at the fort for the extra perks, going back and forth being the biggest. also on days off I really wanted to enjoy the fort itself.

Many people have also said to just keep checking and piecing together Fort reservations until you get they days to want as people are always canceling/changing etc. At any rate, once you get to a point you can commit, it may be possible to put together a week for your stay. Maybe you could stay one week on and one off property if that is all you could put together at Fort. Anyway, good luck and have fun planning whatever you do!

Thanks I'll keep trying that as well. I've been trying to go day to day, to see if there's even one night so I can have a starting point, but the website is just so cumbersome and takes forever.

I will give you some second hand information: We camped in VA Beach at the KOA a few years ago. I got friendly with one of the staff/campers works half the year in VA Beach and half the year at the KOA near WDW (she said Kissimmee). She said that the KOA in Florida is the nicest KOA she has ever been to (and VA Beach was very nice).

An older couple at our church here in Texas (my kids have adopted them as grandparents lol) use to work at the KOA in Kissimmee. They are retired now, but worked for KOAs all over the country. She told me that the Kissimmee KOA is the best one. Just based on what she told me, that's where we would stay if we couldn't get a site at Ft Wilderness. :)

When are you trying to go? I just typed in 7/25-8/8 and all site types come up.

I agree that staying off site is cheaper. I've stayed at Tropical Palms before. It is a site, but not the Fort. I think the Fort is worth the difference, but if the price difference means going to WDW vs not, stay off site and enjoy the trip.

If you really want the Fort, the search I have pulled up shows Preferred sites for $98 and Premium for $104. That's a big chunk of $$$ over 2 weeks, but still under $3000 for the 3 of us with 10 day tickets with park hopper and water parks.

Thanks, if we can't book the fort looks like I may do the KOA

I keep trying anywhere from 7/12 through the first week or so in August. I get the packages to show up but when I click on a site type is says there's no available spots

Just tried the same dates you did and I finally got something...not sure what the deal was before...Thanks for the help, I'm going to try and adjust dates from there.

I would guess there is some weekend date between 7/12 and 7/25 that was booked. I know many others have done what you are doing. Book the biggest chunk available and try to add on. Seems like it usually works. Good luck!

We stayed at the Kissimmee KOA last April prior to going to the fort as we wanted to go to Universal. When you look at the pictures, it makes you wonder. But, Point Blank, It's Great! Already plan on going back to the KOA again as we will now make Universal part of our "Florida" trip from Western New York.

Well I was finally able to pull the trigger on booking our vacation and I did get a two week reservation at the Fort!! Can't wait until July 12!!
