HI, EVERYONE!

I'M NEW TO THIS.. SO, I'M CONFUSED ABOUT HOW RENTING POINTS WORK? I UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT BUT NOT HOW MANY POINTS ARE NEEDED PER NIGHT? MY FAMILY OF 5 (INCLUDING MYSELF) ARE PLANNING OUR FIRST FAMILY VACATION (edited by moderator to remove location and dates) IT WILL BE A 2-WEEK HOLIDAY AND I'M HAPPY TO HAVE COME ACROSS DVC RENTAL ON TRIPADVISOR AND GOOGLE. HOW FAR AHEAD WOULD I NEED TO PLAN WHEN RENTING POINTS? SHOULD I START MAKING RESERVATIONS NOW? AS THIS IS OUR FIRST FAMILY VACAY, NERVES ARE HIGH AND MY DH AND I ARE HOPING TO SAVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I'VE READ ONLINE THAT YOU'D NEED TO PLAN 10 OR MORE MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME...BUT IM NOT SURE WHAT MY NEXT STEP WOULD BE LOL. OBVIOUSLY, I'M A LITTLE MORE CONFUSED THAN I WOULD LIKE TO BE. THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!

You can find DVC points charts online or go to davidsrentals. He has a calculator on his site where you pick your room type and enter your dates and it will calculate the points and cost. December is a popular time. You should request a rental ASAP.

Thank you! I will be looking into that and will start reserving points asap

Our first time renting points was for our 30th anniversary trip to Aulani last year. One of the upsides is that they did not charge us the $35/night parking fee because we were staying on points.
We booked about 6 1/2 months out for a September stay. (I would assume that is slow season?) We did not get our first choice of week/room view, so went back and forth for a few days until we got the room view we wanted but changed the week. So have a backup time/room view to make getting the reservation a success.
Aulani is absolutely gorgeous!! Enjoy your stay.

Definitely act now - December is a popular time and owners can start booking at 11 months out. Also, in my experience, two week's worth of points is quite a bit. It's not uncommon for people to do a "split stay" spending part of the time in a villa on rented points and the remainder of the time on a cash reservation, or renting points for a different room type/category. I've found it hard to remain in the same room solely on rented points for that long of a time, so be prepared for that as well. Good luck!

one of the most important things to know about renting DVC pts is that if you need to cancel, you will likely NOT be able to get a refund.

it can be a great deal if your plans are solid but if health issues or job issues crop up, you might be out the entire amount for the DVC stay.

so be careful...

but david's website does a great job of explaining how it works.
