DL Budget Tips - Western Canada

What campsites will you be staying at?

We're not entirely positive yet. Most likely state sites if we can get them. The booking window is similar to BC, except you can book for the entire year starting on a certain date (I believe it is in February). Hopefully it won't be as stressful as booking through the BC camping website is.

The nice thing is there are lots of state sites along the coast of California that are close to the ocean. Just have to do some research before booking.

Those cookies are called Thin Addictives. They are incredible and wrapped in groups of 3 or so. Great to throw in your backpack.

I'd also check online for coupons: McDonald's, Earl of Sandwich, etc.

Did I mention Pizza Press which is across from the main entrance to DL on Harbour Blvd. It's incredible pizza. $10 for a medium and its awesome.

Also, check out Mouseplanet Disneyland Update which comes out every Monday. Check at the bottom for closures. Looks like Matterhorn, Splash and the Railroad will be closed down when you are there.. There will be a lot of closures as they are getting ready for the 60th Anniversary in spring.

Howdy,

I see that there are AAA discounts at certain restaurants (like Plaza Inn), will they accept BCAA as well for any of these discounts?

A bunch of us went to Disneyland with this tour package... http://www.supervacation.ca/en/content/uswest/dis09we.pdf
  • In addition to Disneyland, you hit Vegas, Universal, and San Francisco.
  • Opportunity for a side trip to Grand Canyon West Rim.
  • hotel/motel and transportation included. Great for a budget traveller.
  • meals are at Chinese Buffets, malls, and McD's
  • driver pulls over every few hours for bathroom breaks
  • great opportunity for kids to see the West Coast on a road trip
  • I prefer the trip in December when the weather is cooler. Don't need to take the kids out of school. Must book by early November to secure spots for this popular time

That looks like a good way to see all those places but I would NOT take kids on that tour, at least not young ones. In a car on a road trip is challenging enough, don't think I'd want to subject strangers to my rowdy youngin's LOL

Those buses are 1/4 full of kids for Xmas. As you are not driving.... it's very easy for your to reach for your youngin's for some quality parenting time.

Is that tour just offered at Christmas time? Or all year round? I read the flier you posted but I don't remember if it had any dates on it....

There is year round trips. However the trips are run around long weekends. I like the Xmas trip because kids don't need to be pulled from school and it's not so hot in the Grand Canyon.

The flyer lists Xmas and the March Spring Break as tour dates. I expect an update soon for Easter and Victoria Day.

There tours are extremely popular with the Chinese and the bus is 90% Chinese. The guides are bilingual. However the quality of the English varies. For me.... I can tolerate the poor English skills for the money I was saving for flights, gas, and hotels. I mentioned the bus option because of the thread title "budget". No airline tickets, no fuel surcharges.

It's not something that we would ever consider doing (group tours aren't for us), but I can think of several people this tour might be good for so thanks for the info, I will pass it along ;-)

I understand the tour itinery may not be for everyone... once the bus pulls into town (Vegas, Los Angelos, and San Fran). You actually have a choice with staying on the tour or just walk away to do your own thing for a half day or full day. If you look at the flyer, the admission prices are EXCLUDED. This allows the riders to meet family friends or do other things (shopping?), while the main group enjoys the guide around town. Very flexible.

I'll also add... Asians are famous for taking pictures. I assure you that the stops are great photographer opportunities.

I will say the only complaint I've heard these these bus tours is the number of hours on the road. However, I like road trips to see the country and there's bathroom stops every few hours to stretch your legs.

fyi.... I was looking at site and noticed they have summer dates announced.... every Saturday!

When choosing which day to go... ask which day "Tom" is working. He was an excellent bilingual guide when I went 6 years ago.

Again, I would not do the trip in the summer because the canyon is so hot. Xmas break is my preferred time to go.

Time to bump this up!

Does anyone know of a place near DLR that will deliver groceries to your hotel? A California version of Garden Grocer? DD and I have a mother/daughter trip planned for the end of July. We'll be at the Tropicana for 4 nights, and we'll only have carry-on luggage. We want to have water and soda as well as breakfast and a few snack items in the room, since the room will have a fridge and microwave.

Or is there somewhere in walking distance where we can load up on these items when we arrive?

Thank you! As long as they don't have a problem with a Canadian billing address or credit card, looks like that will solve our problem right there! Scratch one more thing off my list of things to do.

I use my Mastercard with a Canadian billing address.
