Bypass front desk - go straight to your room upon arrival

I think it would be cool if WDW allowed guests to select their own room like when you cruise. Once you select the room category it could give you a map of rooms to choose from just like DCL does. They provide a building with rooms available and we pick one based on the location we like.

That would be hard to manage. Assigning rooms in a hotel is like Tetris. On a cruise, everyone gets on and off at the same time so availability is the same across the board. For a hotel, they'd need a sophisticated software that can manage incoming and outgoing reservations and room categories so it could even generate an availability map of sorts. There's a lot of moving parts with guests in a hotel which is often why requests can be hard to fulfill.

You won't get a text UNTIL your room is ready.

Not necessarily true. They will still send you a text or email when you arrive even if your room is not ready. It will tell you that your room is not ready yet and you will be notified when it is. Then when it is ready they will notify you again with the room number.

Received this slightly ambiguous email from Disney. I arrive next Friday.

I say 'ambiguous' because it's like "Congrats, you've completed your online check in", but later it tells me how to ensure I've completed my online checkin. It also says I "may be able to skip the front desk". I guess we'll see how it all plays out.

Just wondering how you get your parking pass if you have your own car.

I'm wondering if you still have to "Check in" at the desk to get your Dining plan going?
And what about your parking pass?

I saw that already....I've never stayed onsite. So what does this mean? some people need parking passes and some don't? Your band is your pass?

I guess your band is your pass. I figure I'll just show up and see what happens:confused3

Has anyone who has tried this new process had issues with MBs? We did standard online check-in in November and had to have our CC re-linked to the MB for charging because it didn't take during online check-in. I'd hate to head straight to the park upon arrival only to find out the MB isn't ready for room charging or even worse, an issue with reading tix or dining plans.

... You can choose your specific room on the cruise lines? Is this new? I sailed in 2013 and I don't recall being able to pick out my cabin specifically, but then again, husband was taking care of the cruise at that point. But that's awesome!

You've been able to select your own cabin on all cruises I've ever done since 2009. If you book a "guarantee" stateroom such as an "ocean view guarantee", you can't choose ahead of time. They assign these out of the leftover rooms from that category after others have chosen, which is why they are cheaper. Cruise lines allow you to choose your own stateroom because everyone embarks and disembarks on the same days. That's why it's near impossible for hotels to do this.

I got an email from Disney yesterday and I'm looking forward to giving this a try on Saturday. We will check out our MBs in the store at BC before heading out to Epcot if our room isn't ready when we arrive.

Real world report: I had completed all the online check-in requirements well in advance, got the email congratulating me on same. Arrived at AKL around 2:30pm Friday, never received an email or text. The CL concierge asked if I had received anything because our room was ready. I hadn't. They shrugged it off. (No big deal, I would have liked to participate in the program because I like technology and automation, but the physical check-in meant we had a chance to sit down in the concierge lounge and chat while they got our stuff ready.)

It's my understanding that in MDE you can do standard online check-in OR the bypass front desk check-in (not sure what they call it), but it's seperate and distinct. It sounds like you did standard online check-in?

The only option is to leave a text number or email address, or neither I suppose. There's nothing mentioned about any bypassing the desk. I just looked at mine for POR. Maybe different resorts have different options. I actually noticed that the options changed from when I could first do online checkin to what they say now.

Thanks for the update. I suspect this will probably continue to be the case for the near future. Which notification option did you choose for online checkin, email or text? I am wondering if one if more reliable than the other.

Pretty sure I did text. My phone number was definitely correct. (I doublechecked everything quite a few times as I was excited to try out the service.)

I thought I had read others posting on the boards, maybe this thread, that they didn't recieve a text either. I wonder if that is worse than email. We don't get texts, so I had to pick email. I'll update this thread after we go in ~2 weeks.

I know it's not been rolled out to all resorts yet, although POR and AKL have had it in place for a few weeks now. Maybe they're still working out the kinks - wouldn't be the first time for Disney that they've had kinks to work out

I know. Hilton properties allow me to do this as part of their online check in process (although you can't do online check in until 36 hours out, as opposed to 60 days with Disney). So far, I haven't had an issue with Hilton getting the room I have selected, although I know maintenance issues can come up at any time. It would be nice if instead of them texting/emailing your room number, you could log in 24-36 hours ahead, pick a room, and then they would just send you the message when the room is ready to occupy.
