Howdy budget board,

I'm currently thinking of bumping a September trip up to may because both the wife and I need a break from life sooner rather then later.

However with the anticipated savings of free dining being lost the May trip will be approximately $500 more.

Im trying to bring this price difference down and am enlisting your help!

So now the details.
We are a family of 5. 2 adults and 3 kids aged 2,4 and 7.

We are renting a place at Windsor hills for 8 nights at 727 total.

Undercover tourist pre price increase tickets at 1295.

Parking at parks at 119.

We are driving from Ottawa so 250 for gas.

Will mostly eat at house and bring food in so only 225 for food in park (already picked meals and snacks. Not an estimate. )

So total is 2626.

Sounds good right?
Well we are Canadian so lets convert that to our dollars and its apx 3200.

Now a lot of people would say a family of 5 staying 8 nights and only paying 3200 is doing very well.

But you guys arnt normal people are you? Not only are you Disers but you are the budget suboard Disers!

Surely you all must know a way to bring this price down?

For if not you then who?...

Only thing I can think of is to buy discounted Disney gift cards for your food and parking at the parks. Not sure if it's possible for Canadians though?

Check out Cheaptickets for tickets, they are having a buy 3 get 2 days free. By going through Ebates you get an extra 6.88% cashback. We need more than 5 days but it is still cheaper to add the extra day once we are at WDW so that is what we are doing.

I can't think of anything else that would make a big dent - you seem to have it all thought out! Little things - sign up for Earl of Sandwich emails and get a free sandwich (sign up closer to trip, I think it is good for 2 weeks). Costco sells Wolfgang Puck's gift cards at 20% off which can be used at DtD. Landry's (Raiforest Cafe, TRex and Yak & Yeti) have a club. You pay $25 to join but they give you a $25 reward right away so it is basically free. They give you $25 on your birthday - if one of the adults going has a birthday in April or May have them join. The reward is actually good for 45 days so if you go in the first couple of weeks in May it will work as well. Sam's Club (not sure if you have them in Canada (?)) has discounted Disney cards. You could get enough for your meals and save a little bit.

Straight out discounted Disney cards are not that easy to find. The best way is to buy discounted Target cards (usually 6-7% off) and use them to buy Disney cards - especially if you have a Target RedCard, then you get an extra 5% off.

Are you a member of a reward site? I believe Swagbucks is available in Canada. I average $100 a month and can get all kinds of cards that can be used at Disney, or you can get Paypal.

I should have clarified that. I meant I wasn't sure if Canadians have Target Red Cards and the ability to purchase gift cards and have them shipped free to their home along with purchasing discounted Target Gift cards from secondary markets on top of it.

hi Ottawa, i'm just down the road from you.
so are you an air miles collector? you can get Disney passes through air miles, either 3 or 5 day passes. sometimes they have specials as well. I have purchased the Disney park tickets several times and you can't beat the cost....FREE!
anyways, just a thought as so many do collect air miles now a days.

also if you haven't already purchased your u.s. you may be off by about a hundred.....don't shoot the messenger.

You could go swap out Disney tickets for Discovery Cove admission. This would give you Discovery Cove for one day, plus 14 days free at Seaworld and Aquatica. Discovery Cove even includes all your food and snacks (even alcohol), so that would save you a little more for that day, too.

Discovery Cove day resort admission (does not include swimming with the dolphins, but includes all other features of the park, and your 14 day admission to both Seaworld and Aquatica) plus a 14 day parking pass for SeaWorld and Aquatica would be $985 for all 5 of you, with tax (assuming you are visiting in the first half of May). That would save you $419 US with taxes factored in to all pricing.

Perhaps not what you were originally thinking when looking for cost savings, but worth tossing out anyway. If you have never been to Discovery Cove, I assure you....you wouldn't be disappointed. It is the most amazing park in Orlando, hands down.

Can you give some Swagbucks tips? I use the site but I have the hardest time getting bucks?! Thanks!

Looks like you've covered it all!

Good job on getting your tickets before the increases.

I wouldn't change a thing.

The only thing I see up for grabs is to use your park food budget to bring in your own food and snacks.

But I wouldn't do that. I'd go for the convenience of just eating at the parks. Maybe buy a couple cases of water and bring some frozen bottles though.

Don't know exactly what week you are looking at, but I found some availability for a 3-bedroom condo (sleeps 8) in May for $567.26 total on vacationcentralflorida .com or a 2-bedroom condo (sleeps 6) for $528.84. You have to book Saturday-Saturday, but seemed to have availability for most weeks in May.
Actually, kept looking and for May 23-30 there is actually a 2-bedroom for $438.44.
These condos are in Windsor Hills.

I would try the opposite approach and instead of trying to whittle away at the budget, I would try to increase ways of making more money to bring along...
Garage Sale, part time job, ask for Disney gift cards for any birthdays coming up, etc.

I think you're a little light on your transportation costs. It would cost me around that amount in gas to drive my Maxima from Philly to Orlando and back. With 3 kids and luggage for an 8-night stay, I'm assuming that you're driving something bigger than a 5-passenger sedan. And don't forget that we don't have the Imperial gallon in the USA.

You also have not factored in tolls. And what about a hotel on the way down and back? Or will you drive straight through for 20+ hours with 3 kids?

Having said that, I think that you also need to factor in groceries for the condo. I take it that your $225 for food and snacks is only for what you intend to purchase in the parks? What about the food that you plan to eat in the condo? You need to budget for that. Decide where you're going to shop and download their mobile app to your smartphone so that you can take advantage of any sales and digital coupons they offer. Use some of the tips PPs mentioned for purchasing Disney GCs at a discount and use those GCs for your in-park food and snacks.

You also haven't added anything for souvenirs. It's going to take a lot of willpower to tell the kids no when they see all of the merchandise that Disney offers.

To save a little more money, you could reduce the number of days on your tickets from 7 days down to 5. It's a savings of about $50. It will also save you another $34 because you won't pay for parking.

As PPs pointed out, you might be able to get a cheaper vacation rental for the week. Check VRBO and Homeaway for private rentals.

And I have to agree with McKelly about increasing your budget to allow for more wiggle room and to loosen up the purse strings a bit. At some point, economizing on a vacation makes the experience less enjoyable.

I agree with the above poster and start looking for ways to save more $$ now until may.
Start by purging what you don't need anymore and selling stuff on a garage sale, craigslist, ebay.
Easiest place to cut back on is groceries. Start making less expensive meals, cut out on pop and snacks... lots of breakfast for dinner, spaghetti, and meatless meals.
Try committing to "no spending" 4 out of 7 days a week. Make sure you get your gas and groceries on the spending days... but it's amazing how this one trick can work. It will make you really think how easy it is to stop and get a coffee. . Or a magazine without even thinking about it.

Best of luck!

OP you have already thought of most discounts....the one biggie that you can't alter is those tickets..... they're set in stone...my only advice would be to investigate a Y.E.S. program for your kids in early september, which provides a class and a discount (not sure what) on park admission. other than that, a few discounted gc's might be your best bet, possibly on gas, to use on the trip, or other places you may be eating with the family? Do you use credit cards at all which give rewards? that helps also..... I do think that your cost is really fair, considering your family size and distance, etc. could you look at orbitz, or something for a room only deal at a disney value resort, thus saving parking costs? since your youngest is under 3 isn't she allowed as an infant? (I may be wrong on the ages)

Been busy havn't had a chance to frequent this thread and am super delighted by all the replies :)

hi Ottawa, i'm just down the road from you.
so are you an air miles collector?

Howdy fellow Canuck how about that weather finally getting away from -20C? :). And no we currently only have a cash back visa card but are thinking about getting air miles. Problem with me is that i'm constantly loosing cards and that is what happened last time I had an air miles card.

You could go swap out Disney tickets for Discovery Cove admission.
Discovery cove really does sound amazing and I hope to be able to do that one day. But right now my Disney obsession is too strong to even consider that yet :).

These condos are in Windsor Hills.
The wife has been scouring all the options at Windsor Hills. The fact that many are Saturday to Saturday bookings makes it tricky since we need the Friday as well. There is the option of a cheap hotel for the Friday and then move over to Windsor Hill afterwards but we found a very affordable place that includes the Friday so figure its not worth the $50 savings.

I would try the opposite approach and instead of trying to whittle away at the budget, I would try to increase ways of making more money to bring along...
Garage Sale, PART TIME JOB (my own emphasis ;)), ask for Disney gift cards for any birthdays coming up, etc.
Disney gift cards is actually a great idea as my daughters birthday is coming up.
As for my emphasis on the part time job....Remember we are moving the trip up to May from September because we are burnt out :). I'm a full time stay at home dad during the day and work two jobs, one in the evening and the other on the weekend. Only way to increase the workload would be to upload my consciousness to a robot so that I can bypass the sleep requirements :).

I think you're a little light on your transportation costs.
I used gas buddie to give me a trip estimator for the trip. However you are right in that I haven't factored in wear and tear for the trip as the millage is considerable.

And what about a hotel on the way down and back? Or will you drive straight through for 20+ hours with 3 kids?

Ha! You say that like 3 kids in the car for 25 hours isn't a delight! But in all seriousness it really isn't that bad. We've done this trip before as well as many to Myrtle beach (18 hours). We always drive straight through since i'm a night owl who has no problem driving all night, then sleeping in the car while the wife takes over, to then finish up the drive. With much of the driving done during the night that really cuts back on the kids angst. During the day we have all kinds of things to keep em busy. If any of em gets too rowdy...well I do have 3 of em. I figure I have one more then I really need so am considering just abandoning one at the side of the road if they act up as an example to the remaining two.

Having said that, I think that you also need to factor in groceries for the condo.
Reason I havn't factored that in is because those costs will be about the same as what I would be paying for groceries at home (actually might be lower because your food prices are considerably lower and we will be making very simple meals) and i'm only figuring how much more this trip would cost on top of my already existing budget.

You also haven't added anything for souvenirs. It's going to take a lot of willpower to tell the kids no when they see all of the merchandise that Disney offers.
Been to the world with them several times and it's never been an issue. Not only do I not have a hard time saying no (because in reality they are quite spoiled so no guilt at all) but they have learned through experience from such things as the candy section right before the cash at the grocery store that asking gets them nowhere.

Furthermore I always make sure each trip that they get the best souvenir that Disney offers. It's, in my opinion, the best value souvenir as the quality is top notch, it never diminishes or gets ruined, and lasts a lifetime. I'm of course talking about memories.........insert cheesy groan here.

At some point, economizing on a vacation makes the experience less enjoyable.
What I strive for is a balance between value and quality. I think I do a pretty darn good job of that and for me this part in the planning process is super fun. We get to mull over every single detail of the trip and argue back and forth (with the wife) over which place to stay and why, which snack over which snack etc etc. We never go for the cheapest option which would be like a $50 hotel room with no pool. But we also won't splurge on a deluxe room at the contemporary because we can get like 2-3 mid level trips for that same value which we would prefer.

No instead we are striking a balance this trip. We arn't preparing all of our food and neglecting the disney food options. We are eating in the parks around 1 meal a day with 1 snack a day apx. Alot of those meals are shared as the disney potions are huge. And this for us is fun because we get to whittle down the options to our top picks and really explore and apreciate all of our options.

Instead of the previously mentioned shady hotel room we have opted for a very spacious 3 bedroom condo at a very affordable rate that allows us to make many of our meals and also opens up to a resort with a pool and waterslide (what else could children ever need?).

While I agree with your sentiment that sometimes you can budget your trip down to such a level it is unenjoyable for my family we arn't, and never have, been at that point. Budgeting and mulling over all the value vs quality options truly is alot of fun for us in planning a trip. I just really try to bring the price down as much as possible and put that money saved into future trips.

It will make you really think how easy it is to stop and get a coffee. . Or a magazine without even thinking about it.

Done and done. How do you think my family of 5 is able to afford this trip in the first place? :). We actually went over our finances about a year ago with a fine tooth comb to distill our purchases down to exactly where our money was going. Fast food was inordinately high (Tim hortons coffee is my wifes weakness and mcdonalds is mine) and was one of the easier and more substantial cuts we made. Another thing I routinely do is renegotiate all my rates with insurances, phone plans, internet, tv etc.

investigate a Y.E.S. program for your kids in early september
I forgot about that! I'll have to look into it.
since your youngest is under 3 isn't she allowed as an infant?
Yep :). Not looking forward to full rates for my family of 5.

Again thanks all for your tips, suggestions, and comments. It really is what makes these boards great and the planning process so much fun.

Howdy budget board,

So now the details.
We are a family of 5. 2 adults and 3 kids aged 2,4 and 7.

We are renting a place at Windsor hills for 8 nights at 727 total. - My friends live in Colorado, and have a 4 kids, and they have stayed at Windsor hills, Westgate, and used VBRO for rentals, when they first started coming, they would get a large house, with pool, game room and such, then she realized they really weren't using those perks, so now they go for a 3 bedroom, condo with pool access. Now she has learned to negotiates the price, here in Orlando there are so many vacation rentals that's a benefit for vacationers. Don't be insulting of course, she normally saves between 100.00 and 200.00 dollars. Also does that number included resort fees, and wifi connection?

Undercover tourist pre price increase tickets at 1295.

Parking at parks at 119. - Is there a charge for parking at your Resort? DH and I got a shock one time, when we got our credit card statement and they had tacked on 20.00 a day for parking, times 6 nights was 120.00 what we were not aware of. We were not at Disney but I have been diligent ever since in double checking.

We are driving from Ottawa so 250 for gas. - I think your low on the cost of gas, I live in Orlando and the cost of gas in going up, as summer approaches it will continue to climb.

Will mostly eat at house and bring food in so only 225 for food in park (already picked meals and snacks. Not an estimate.) - Part 1 - breakfast will be a good saver here, cereal, muffins, bagels, pop tarts, milk & juice. If your thinking of dinner options, does the unit have a crock pot, if not bring one. Don't for get seasoning. You can cook meals overnight, then just warm up when you get back. I personally would not leave the crock pot on while in the parks, what if your having a blast, you don't want to stop to have to go back to check on the crock pot. I also suggest doing 2 for 1 meals - make red sauce with meat balls ( a couple of jars of red sauce and a couple of package of frozen meatballs and your good to go), use one night with pasta and the other for meatball subs or a pork roast and make pork sandwiches or slider, can be added to breakfast style potatoes for an easy casserole dish. Part 2 - what you are choosing now might not be what you want when you are in the parks. We humans love to change our minds. Also have you thought about doing 1 character meal, lunch would be best cost wise, I suggest this as it will cut down on some time standing in line for character autographs, a nice and cool way to regroup, and oh did I say Cool as in air conditioning. Part 3 - check out coupon offers of meals away from the parks, Sweet Tomatoes has had coupons for 4 adults for 25.00 and includes a drink, or kids eat free. Olive Garden and O' Charley's are great ways to take some meals back to unit to eat, they give large portions easy for sharing, and of course pizza and Chinese food take out. Part 4 - Don't over spend on groceries.

For if not you then who?...

So you are driving straight thru, your are a brave one aren't you... Check out where you will be think of stopping for gas, and to eat, look for coupons or groupons in that area, for savings, also you can check out the gas prices in that area.

I agree, have a garage sale, with proceed going for a character meal, or souvenir fund.

Hit the dollar store for glow in the dark necklaces, and other Disney items.

For the Friday night stay, you could opt for a hotel in a city like Gainesville or Lake city and get some sleep and then on Saturday make the rest of the drive into Orlando. If your coming down the other coast, stop in one of the beach towns you could even take a walk on the beach, for and added treat.

Reason I havn't factored that in is because those costs will be about the same as what I would be paying for groceries at home (actually might be lower because your food prices are considerably lower and we will be making very simple meals) and i'm only figuring how much more this trip would cost on top of my already existing budget.

My tip is to decide on your condo meals ahead of time, or at least have a rough idea of what you'll be making. Bring little baggies/packets with all the spices or spice mixes you'll need. All those little bits don't take up much room in the car, but they save you a lot on buying a whole jar of oregano, chile powder, etc when you get there.

This is a great idea! We do this when we go on vacation and stay in a place with a kitchen.
