Points Substitutions

If I have a reservation made with UY2015 points during my 2015 UY, can I (1) borrow 2016 points for a dummy reservation in UY2015, (2) cancel said dummy reservation, and (3) substitute some of my UY2015 points with the borrowed/freed up UY2016 points on my existing reservation WITHOUT canceling and rebooking the [old] reservation?

The reason I would like to do this is so that I can borrow the freed up 2015 points into my 2014UY for a last minute reservation. I don't have enough free 2015 points.

There has to be availability for the reservation you are substituting. Otherwise, your reservation should go to a waitlist.
You can't hold the reservation, so you would be cancelling and rebooking, which means the days could disappear before you got them booked. Not worth the trouble unless there is availability, in which case you would book with the 2016 points and then cancel and free up your 2015 points so you could borrow them into 2014 use year.

If it's last minute you might look into a rental of distressed points, a cash discount reservation, staying off site or seeing what discounts are otherwise available to you through CRO. I wouldn't do this as you've described it but it should work. IF you decide to do so I'd likely just call and tell MS what you want to do. I'd only consider it if both options are still available to reserve now.

That's how it should be but really isn't. DVC will almost always allow one to substitute points assuming it does not violate the home resort reservation window principles. If it's the same home resort or something done at or after 7 months, there should be no issue in it being allowed even though I personally wish it was the way you describe.

Yes, you can do this. You can ask MS to swap out current UY points for borrowed points if you have them in your account, without having to cancel/rebook your vacation.

i have done point reallocations several times now, cm's seem to be more knowledgeable about this recently.

If you borrow 2016 points to make the reservation, what happens to those points after you reallocate? Do they stay in 2015 as borrowed points or can they be put back into 2016?

Banking and borrowing are not reversible. If you borrow 2016 points into the 2015 use year, they stay in the 2015 use year even if you cancel (or reallocate points for) the reservation that originally used them. The borrowed points will expire at the end of the 2015 use year.

Thanks. I'm about to close on a second contract that will increase my 2015 points. However, I'm nearing my 7-month window for a late October trip. Trying to decide if I should borrow or wait.

Can you bank the 2015 points from the second contract? I think I'd be very nervous about waiting to book a late October trip.

You could also ask MS to reallocate to free up 2015 points and bank them if you aren't past the banking deadline. That's assuming you don't have to borrow all the points you need for the October reservation.

Good luck.

Yes I can bank. I have enough points on contract #1 (June UY) to do what I want (remaining 2015 points plus borrowed 2016 points). At the end of the day, I can always rent points that I won't use in contract #2 or bank them as you suggested. I'm projected to close around March 15. My trigger date is March 27 to book my room for an October 27 check in.
