Massive Overhaul of I-4 Through Orlando Started

Sorry to tack this on here but it seems better than starting a new thread.

How does 417 work for payment? I really have tried googling this. I know 'cash' is an option, but it is a thing where you take a ticket, or you throw change into a basket every few miles, or they just photograph your plate and send you a bill? I haven't been in FL in a very long time, but the last time I was it was combinations of 1 and 2.

I would be going from MCO to (let's say Celebration-ish; destination is AKL). Google maps has me going south on Jeff Fuqua blvd if I want to avoid I4. I tried to use the toll calculator page but I'm not smart enough for it to let me use Jeff Fuqua as the 'entry ramp' for 417.

From a local that travels from Volusia County into downtown each day for work: If you can avoid I-4 during the construction periods by using 417/528, do it!

Unfortunately the Sunrail isn't anywhere near WDW. But in the future when it does move into Osceola County it will certainly be the best option.

We are heading to Disney the first week of March. I'm taking notes going through this thread...thanks for some valuable, time saving, grief reducing info.

Does 417 take EZ Pass or only SunPass?

Unfortunately no EZPass. Northerners must get a Florida pass or pay cash. I bought a SunPass for my convenience some years ago since I also travel some of the Miami and Tampa expressways that require a pass.

The main line has attended toll booths. Cash payers must "exit" to the right to the booths while Florida pass holders fly under sensors at 65mph. The main exit to WDW (EPCOT Drive) has no tollbooth, as you were just through a main line booth. Smaller exits like those at Celebration will require quarters so make sure you have a bunch.

Exit 6 is a little uncomfortable and can get very busy because it's the Downtown Disney exit, so it could fill up more. We like using Exit 3 which takes you around Gaylord Palms and into the main entrance to WDW, so you go under the big gate :-) Then you can just follow the signs to wherever you want to go.

Thanks for this information! :)

Exit 3 (Osceola Parkway) is unattended $.50 cash required. It's a better choice for MK, DS and AK areas, and EPCOT resorts.
Exit 6 (FL 536/International Drive) gets crowded only at really busy times but I've never had a problem with it. It's best for EPCOT, Downtown Disney - I mean Disney Springs, and resorts such as PO, OKW, SS. No toll to exit.
Either exit is good for CBR and AoA resorts.

There is a great Wiki on FL417:

How much does the SunPass cost?

Thank you for all this info...we usually take I-4 all the way in but looks like we'll be using an alternate route! :crazy2:

The suction cup one you can move from car to car is $20 plus initial credit card load for tolls. There is also a $5 sticker version that can only be installed in one car for its life plus credit card load of $10 to start. Well worth it!

Thanks...where would one purchase the SunPass?

We come from St Pete and have to drive thru Tampa construction. It sometimes adds 20-60 mins on to our 90 min drive. Now we will have to contend with I-4??? Arg.

The construction is from exit 74 and goes past downtown to Sanford. If you are going to Disney, you'll be off at exit 68 at the latest.

How much traffic is this going to cause? . . .

1) From what has been said, this is an invention of The Devil.
2) He wants to show you what to expect if you don't behave in this lifetime.
3) Frankly, I think the I-4 Work Zones will be worse.

:cool1:

Is the Western Beltway part of the SunPass system or another?

Never mind. Found the Sun Pass website. Took awhile, but I found I needed to do each roadway separately, could not pick a starting point on the turnpike and ending point on the Beltway.

Not seeing a map-but it appears Kirkman Road is exactly at US, so it must be a direct connection to WDW if I read it correctly, so in the long long run it would be nice to have for a back and forth.

Nope, other direction. It starts near US and goes north through Orlando.

Does anyone know how the Disney buses will go from the airport to Disney World with Magical Express?

If so, that's the way I would do it.
