What Do You Do With All That Bling?!!

Hanging in the living room to see as we leave for our runs each day!
Wow I really like that. Nice job on laying out the medals.

I like the medal hangar with the sliders rather than hooks, that would make it easier to add more, I dont know if I want to hang more than one hangar anywhere, so may need to figure something else out. I like Keel's shadow box idea for the big races, like my first marathon and Goofy.
After looking at Castles2Castles I'm thinking sliders are definitely the way to go.

My wife made both holders for me. That was back when I though a marathon at Disney would would be one and done for me. I have 26 disney medals on my hangar now..medal2.JPG

Glad I'm not the only one who thought just one marathon and I can check it off my list. As I've said before, this is one addictive sport and Rundisney knows how to keep us interested.

Of course, @Slogger!! I love making shadowboxes! I made one for my husband's amateur boxing event as well - they are so fun to put together.

Keels....you are so nice but I don't want to take advantage.. You could tell me how you made it and I could "noodle" my way through it.

I am planning to shadowbox all of mine and they'll go on a large empty wall in our office here at the house.

This is what I did from NOLA last month - I got the frame off Amazon for less than $10:

That is awesome looking I may do that for the WDW 2016 medal...as it will be my first marathon would be nice to do something special with it

Easy Peasy! All you need is:
  • 12x12 Shadowbox Frame (I use these from Amazon.com - they come in black and white)
  • 12x12 Custom Mat in a Color of Your Choosing (I get mine from Hobby Lobby when I can use a 40% coupon - it's the basic material, nothing fancy, so they work out to be roughly $7. You can have the mat cut right there, takes just a couple of minutes!)
  • E6000 Craft Adhesive Glue (though SuperGlue or Gorilla Glue will work just as well, I like E6000 because the polymer doesn't IMMEDIATELY set, so you have a chance to adjust things!)
  • Scotch Adhesive Dots (Again, you can use SuperGlue or Gorilla Glue - or event he E6000 ... just be warned that liquid or polymer adhesives may show up like water/grease stains on bibs)
Step 1: Line the back side of your bib (as well as photos if you plan to include those!) with the glue dots in a line around the outside edge. Position the bib where you want it on the mat and press down. I'll usually put a dictionary or something over the bib for about 30 minutes to flatten out and stick everything where you want it. If you're really a perfectionist (I am not), I guess you could measure and stuff - but I trust my eyeballs and like for things to be organic! :D
Step 2: Wear your medal one last time while the glue dots cure and bond your bib to the mat (about 30 minutes, or more if you get sentimental).
Step 3: And this can be a little tricky, which is why I like to use the E6000 - it buys me a little time. Position the medal where you would like it, with the back center of the ribbon running BEHIND the mat. Slide the ribbon down on the back and run a FULL line of E6000 along the back side of the mat (the side that won't be seen and will be covered by the backing of the shadowbox frame), roughly 1/2 inch down from the top of the mat.
Step 4: Slowly press the back center of the medal ribbon so that the top aligns with the top of the mat - your glue line should roughly hit the center of the medal ribbon. Adjust slightly left to right to make sure that your actual medal drops in the center of the mat at the height of your choosing.
Step 5: Let the mat set for at least 6-8 hours (again, I'll use something like a dictionary to put pressure on top of the mat the make sure things stay the way I want.
Step 6 (Optional): Add any other elements to the mat with glue dots (ie. stickers, a finishers photo, the shoelace chip if you're so inclined, confetti, streamers, etc.).
Step 7: Place the mat in the shadowbox, followed by the back of the frame - and you're done!

As far as Step 4 goes, I've seen people who have cut the ribbon on their medals so just a small tab wraps around the back, but just the thought of that makes me sad, so I kept the whole thing intact.

Total Cost (including glue supplies that I already had): $23.79

Hope that all makes sense!

Thanks for the awesome instructions Ill def. need to remember this for later

All my medals are on a wooden rack my hubby and I made together, except for my NYC Marathon medal from Nov. That is still hanging in the livingroom because I love it sooooo much. My bibs are in an album I made and my shirts go through a regular rotation. This past fall and had about 20 race shirts made into a scarf. Love it!

Keels....that is awesome. Might have to recruit my daughter to help with the shadowbox...she's very crafty.
Otherwise you are going to have to do a powerpoint demo at my next Disney race in September.

@Castle2Castle how wide is the one you have? 18", 24" or 30"?

I've been looking at this one for awhile and may finally be ready to pull the trigger. :)

While we are on the subject of "bling", tshirts, bibs, etc......does anyone know how much the RunDisney vinylmation figures cost and where to get them during a Disney event?

I have no idea on cost as Ive never been into vinylmation but I imagine the wouldn't cost anymore than a regular figure would and you would most definitely find them at the expo

At the expo, around the normal cost. Have you seen them? They aren't to everyone's taste (they aren't to mine). And they don't make the cute little medals anymore for them. (grr) Why buy a little rundisney Vinylmation if the little Vinymation can't have a medal, that's how I feel.

Today I was putting away some clothes in the closet and my pile of running shirts tumbled down. I actually enjoyed taking them all out and looking at them. I'm glad I still have these shirts.....all of them. Some are very nice. Not sure what to do with them, probably a t shirt quilt will be done but not yet.

Might wear a few of them for running events this Spring.

Sorry I haven't been over here for a bit to have seen this -- the new notifications are pretty handy or else I may have missed this entirely! Still had the receipt saved in my e-mail from two years ago and looks like we have the 30" hanger.

Sorry again for not responding sooner!

Thanks!! No worries...I actually ended up grabbing a 30" display anyway. :) I'll have to take a picture and post it later! :goodvibes
