Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Everything that is big and spectacular in the States like the Rockefeller tree lighting, just imagine our Charlie Brown version and call it a day. ;)

You might be joking, but I really don’t like this answer. Our Christmas time and traditions are just as big and spectacular as we want them to be. You are selling us short.

I’m sure most major cities in Canada have their own tree lighting ceremony. Sure, we don’t go over the top with singers and tv cameras, but do we need to?

Tell us the price so even your comrades can faint.
Paid $4.79 for this 4L jug at Independent Grocer today. Probably would have been slightly cheaper (by 10 or 15 cents) at Real CDN Superstore or Costco. It would be $4.99 at Save On Foods across the street from Independent 🤦

Yes I was playin'.

And understand your point.

We have a lovely, quaint tree lighting ceremony here. I go and I have fun. And we do have singers and such.

But I have been to NYC many a time. And letting Buzz know that we do not go big like them with much.

-----------

And if anyone has not been to Rockefeller, the cameras do not show that it is actually a very small quaint area.

Anything Christmas would turn my crank but my very favourite Christmas tree ceremony was a small traditional one in Williamsburg, Virginia.

We vacationed on the Sunshine Coast in September and a 4L of 3% was seven-ish dollars in Sechelt. :faint: That was in a small local grocery store. There were none of the bigger (and cheaper) chains there that we could see.

Surprised. Thought it would be more.

You are giving me two flashbacks -

Those annoying tupperware pierce the bag for a spout thingy.

And when the bag falls right out of the damn pitcher. Those bags always seemed like Las Vegas.
Never had the bag fall out of the pitcher but if you cut the hole too big on the corner your going to have a mess. ….lol

That’s our price to here , just went up 60 cents I think. Just don’t buy the organic milk that is close to $10 for 1% . I’m just east of Toronto.

Interesting - when visiting I’ve always found prices in Ontario to be lower, and in BC to be higher, than here in Alberta. 4L of 3% is $5.13 at all the stores (more at a Mac’s or something). Milk never goes on sale.

We don’t have that, we have milk in bags instead ;)

I've mentioned that I live in Europe and work at an International organization. Bags of milk is one of the things that does not translate well. Along with the hokey-pokey and Polkaroo (though that throws even the Americans).

I was probably having a "umm, you are not remembering correctly" moment.

And your synopsis is probably what truly happened. It has been decades (and decades ;)).

It made me laugh though as I did hear my father saying, "Balls! :furious:"

We have a big ceremony here in KC. It's the Plaza Lighting Ceremony at The Plaza (as it's known locally but officially The Country Club Plaza it's an outdoor shopping center with nice restaurants, local and non-local stores and a uniqueness to it, it's modeled after Seville, Spain). It's got tv cameras, musical performances, fireworks, and one of the biggest parts is who will help flip the lights. Last year in-person stuff didn't happen but it's back to in-person this year. The Women's professional soccer team flipped the lights this year. It's a really big affair here but that doesn't make it less special just because of that. It's not needed to do it all up with performances and whatnot but it's seen as a big honor to do so and it's not considered over the top all the hubbub that goes with the ceremony. This year was the 92nd year of that.

During Christmastime the Plaza has all these lights on the buildings (hence The Plaza Lights) and it's just so pretty to walk down there with them on. They also have horse drawn carriage rides (although the practice in recent years is considered controversial). I always wanted to take a ride in Cinderella's Carriage but have yet to do so. Years ago my husband did surprise me with a carriage ride on the Plaza though.

As far as tree lighting probably the Mayor of Kansas City (Missouri side) tree is considered the biggest. Who helps flip the lights is also a very big deal. According to current information it's about 100 feet tall. They turn the wood from the tree into ornaments for purchase (goes to a charity fund to help citizens here which is kinda the whole point of the tree itself actually, a symbol of giving back to those in need). The design of those ornaments are made locally by employees of Hallmark.

Just in case people can’t picture bagged milk…lol

There come with 3 smaller bags in package. Yes you can get chocolate milk this way too.

But you’re in Toronto right? Just don’t drink milk any more?
