Debt Dumpers - 2016

@ruadisneyfan2 sorry to hear that you lost your grandmother.

I've made kids promise that they'll cremate me without any service (or donate my body to science so there's no need for cremation) and take the $10-$12,000 and enjoy a fabulous trip to Disney. That's the best way they can honor me.

Just chiming in here.... if you truly want to donate your body to science, look into it NOW. It needs to be decided by YOU now and agreed to by your family AFTER your passing. It cannot be something that THEY decide to do after you pass. And believe it or not, there are a lot of restrictions (you cannot be terribly overweight, you have to be in relatively good health, etc)... and expense to your family (although probably not as much as expense as a traditional funeral). Just wanted you to know because this is something I've thought about and was surprised to learn all of this recently!..................P

I've been meaning to ask, what sort of riding/showing do you do?

I show(ed) hunter under saddle on the AQHA circuit! I've taken a break for a while with grad school and getting into new jobs, and my husband has also showed western pleasure for a while, so we can really only afford one show horse at a time. We sold his horse a couple years back and got me a a hunter under saddle prospect and we'll be going to our first show together in December! I've been out of it for several years now though so I need to update my wardrobe and tack some. We also run our own local show series. Do you ride?

I didn't know about the cost to donate. That really stinks! I will look into it and decide. Thanks for the heads up.

I dabble in a bit of everything when I have time/money- do a bit of 3 day eventing, a bit of H/J, bit of judging of our local shows (English/Western flat show), trailing riding and moving cows - our horses are kept at in inlaws who have 80 acres, they have about 20 head of cattle which we help with (and this is our beef supply) - I have an Irish Sport Horse x QH and DH has a Paint x Fjord. I also have my project pony who is on a full lease to a fancy Hunter/Jumper barn and killing it in the A circuit pony hunters. Good for the soul they are.

The rules may vary based on the area - my FIL was donated to science specifically because he was NOT healthy. He was a type 1 diabetic with several rare physical ailments as side effects and they superficially wanted to investigate those. I am not certain if my MIL had power of attorney or what, but it was something she decided to do shortly before he passed (he was taken off life support which is critical when you are diabetic when they were certain there was no brain activity/chance of his recovery). She also only received $1,000 but the savings on the funeral helped her a ton - we had a lovely memorial instead.

Can you so both at once? I've heard of ibotta but know nothing about it.

the only hang up I don't like about Ibotta is that it can only be used at national chains such as walmart. target etc

we don't have much in the way of national chains here we do have walmart but I don't go there often. But if you do then yes good savings with Ibotta, Saving Star Checkout51 and Walmart Savings Catcher

Anyone want to share how to tackle this?

We are not investment/finance peeps. We are refinancing our house, and getting $75k out of it. $32k will go to credit card debt. . Buh-bye credit card debt!

The remainder is for a pool. But the company is now booked through till winter (I'm in Michigan). We'll be putting down a small deposit for a spring spot.

We'll have $43k just "sitting" till spring. I know us, it will disappear. Not all of it, but we need as much of that money as possible. And I know we will dip into it, if it's just there.

Not gonna lie, it would be nice to possibly make some money off of it while it sits. Something SAFE! And preferably more then the crappy savings interest rate.

Suggestions?

You won't make anything in the way of good returns in a few short months, so honestly take that notion off the table. You would probably get the most by opening a high-yield savings account, but you would have pretty easy access to the funds. If you want to make sure that you don't raid the funds, I would put it into a short-term CD. You can do a 3 or 6 month CD.

https://www.ally.com/bank/high-yield-cd/

I was going to suggest Ally as well. It looks like at their interest rates for their 3 month or 6 month CD you'd be better off just getting one of their savings accounts though. .67% for CD and 1% for savings account. Unless there's something I don't know about CDs, which very well may be the case! We moved our savings to them about 6 months ago and have been very happy.

I suggested the CD because it will be harder for them to withdraw and waste the funds, but I agree that the savings account has a higher return. But the difference over a few months is pretty negligible, especially if wasting the funds on other purchases is a primary concern.

I was going to suggest a CD as well. What about a mutual fund? Maybe if you see it growing it would curb you from dipping into it.

Sigh...car repairs today to the tune of $550. DH said he can wait for awhile for new glasses. But still, thought we were getting somewhere.

@LilSweetPeaPhoto I was going to suggest a short term CD also. Interest varies of course, but I usually find it comparable to savings accounts. (Haven't checked lately, so I trust the figures others posted). The advantage is that it does earn interest and is difficult to access until the term is up.

Credit score is slowing creeping to the 640's (This time last year I was at 550.)

Upset cause I haven't worked a full paid period at all in the last month it feels like. The baby has a stomach bug (I think I do to) so I had to come home from work to take care of him. I have interviews for a seasonal/2nd job so that I can pay off the Disney Trip in March quicker and so that I can pay for Christmas (Son's father only sends me a $100 every two weeks which isn't helping for his expenses)

Also been stressed for looking for a new daycare that won't cost $1,000 a month. Currently we are traveling 20 miles to take my son to daycare and its killing my car (not to mention Gas)

One last rant is that I have to do emissions for my car who still has a fuel sensor problem meaning I won't be able to register my car.

Sorry that you and your son haven't been feeling well. Hope you feel better soon. And good luck with the interviews!

Is the child support court mandated? It seems very low. If there has been an increase in income for your son's dad, then you should seek an increase in your child support payments as well. If these payments are not court mandated, then you might want to consider filing through the court for child support payments. Your child's father should be providing equitable support. $200 is nothing when child care alone is costing you $1000 a month!

I'm in the process of filing custody (more money). Would love to get child support and been meaning to go down and apply. He use to give me $400 a month so the whole $100 change he did out of spite.

Thank god for Zofran though. My son only vomited this morning and nothing but him watching Mickey Mouse the rest of the day.

Hi everybody! I've been MIA for awhile. Still plugging away. Paid off another store card.

Glad to hear that you paid off another store card. Only $700 till Amazon is paid off.

This is exactly why you need to file. He won't be able to reduce his support payments out of spite or because he doesn't feel like it or for pretty much any other reason (unless he becomes unemployed). And if he doesn't make payments, you can return to the court and have them garnish his wages.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I have been MIA. We are plugging along. Will make another $300 payment on the window loan which is sitting at zero percent. It's down to $5300 from $7200 in 4 short months. Although I hated to take out the loan at the time, it has made such a difference in the heating and cooling of our home. By this time last year, we had been using at least one space heater. And last year was a mild fall and winter in NJ (it was 70 degrees in December!!)
This year, temperatures have dropped to the upper 30's/low 40's the past few nights and we still have not needed to turn on our furnace. I'm hoping to hold out until Halloween. We shall see :).
Admittedly, I won't be saving as much as I normally do with the holiday season approaching. I'll save what I can, but what's most important to me is not having huge CC bills come January.
Hope everyone is doing well.

I feel like I'm hemorraghing money!

Car repairs $1300 estimate
School district in upheaval so no clue what to do about moving (we just decided to stay)
Rent increase of $10 a month
Garage increase of $20 a month
Medical bills are rolling in about $1400 out of pocket total for all the craziness
Really awesome bday party coming up b/c I feel awful for my son $200 (way less if I can help it)
Feeding a teenage boy $527 in food last month. I meal prepped on Sunday for 3 days and almost everything was gone by Tuesday. This boy can eat.

I feel like there is not enough time in a day. Not enough time in a week to plan. I feel so discouraged.

I have paid almost all of one card off (1400 total paid off) but I need to stop and regroup. I had to charge new work clothes because my old
Stuff is looking really bad and no money for clothes. Argh! I'm going to stop debt dumping until next year unless I can figure out a way to get this food bill under control.
