The Trip That's Happening a Year Early - A Marathon Weekend 2017 PTR Update:12/22 - Day Seven Plans

Good score on the Vans backpacks! I almost bought the Villains one a couple years ago and then didn't :sad2: You basically got 2 for less than the price of one so that's awesome!

Oh, what a lovely itinerary you planned for 2018 lol! Sorry to hear it probably won't happen that way. We've never been on a cruise either but now are kind of considering a short one for the near future. I'm just not sure how I'd do as I get sever motion sickness including in the car if I'm a passenger...........

I actually sent that itinerary for 2018 to Luke, and he loved it! :D The text conversation was as follows:
L: "That would be fun. It would have to be the only trip we'd take that entire year though..."
F: "I know. We would probably take a break from Disney in 2019 to recover from this amazing 2018 trip."
L: "Whoa whoa whoa. Let's not get crazy here. Unless by a break from Disney you mean just go to California instead of Florida?"

So, there are a lot of things that need to happen over the next few months finance-wise to begin planning that epic 2018 trip, but it could actually happen...

I'm a little scared of a cruise, but I fly a lot each year and never get sick there. I also used to be a canoe instructor at a summer camp, but that was on a river and not the rocking waves of the ocean... I think I would just spend the little bit extra to be more towards the center of the boat, as opposed to the bow or stern. I think that's how it works, right? Same as in an airplane, the steadiest part is over the wings...

Doing the Castaway Challenge would be awesome ... I hope you can find a way to make it work!!

Also ... I love that Disney WestJet plane. Some days I'm almost tempted to fly to Toronto and then fly WestJet to Orlando so that I could fly on that plane ... but that would be way too expensive and a waste of time (and there's no guarantee that I'd get that plane anyway).

I hope so too! We agreed to try and live as frugal as possible over the next few months, and we'll see how much of our debt we've paid off/how much we've saved and then decide if it's something we can do. I'm really hoping we can pull it off!

I know! I'd love to be on that plane one day, but I NEVER go through customs in Toronto unless I get a crazy deal on a flight. I've done it before, but I find it way too busy, and such a huge pain. We have to fly to Toronto, pick up our bags, walk soooo far, drop our bags off at the US connections, then wait to go through customs (and I've seen insane wait times before - like 3+ hours - they usually end up calling people up by what flight they are on). In contrast, going through customs in Edmonton is a breeze! I will gladly pay a few extra dollars to avoid Toronto.

WestJet also has this plane too:

If you ever fly anywhere in Canada, WestJet is 100% the way to go! I refuse to travel with Air Canada, way too many bad experiences.

131 Days to Go! Let's Talk Money!

Moving back to our upcoming 2017 trip, we are now 131 days away from checking in to Old Key West! It's getting closer, but it's still seems so far away!

Now to talk about everyone's favourite topic - money! Saving for trips to Disney is quite different for us Canadians - we have no Disney Visa, no Targets or Sam's Club's to buy discounted gift cards, we are not able to set up Disney Savings Accounts... and we have to deal with a less-than-stellar exchange rate. Luke and I have both set up US savings accounts with our banks, which allow us to transfer money over from CAD to USD at any point for the exchange rate the bank is offering on that given day. I transferred $50 Canadian dollars over the other day and got a whopping... $37.97 US. Seriously, I wasn't lying when I said the current exchange rate sucks.

I *think* our budget will be around $8000CAD for this trip - which seems like a HUGE number, but it's actually under $6200USD, which I think is fairly standard for a 9-night Disney trip at Deluxe Villa resorts... (I say think because we didn't actually set a number when we started planning). The breakdown is something along these lines:
  • Flights: $1200CAD - Booked months ago on a credit card, moved to a line of credit for lower interest
  • Hotels: $1800CAD - (thank you for DVC rentals!) - Also booked months ago on a credit card and transferred to a line of credit for lower interest
  • Park tickets: $1050CAD - 7day base tickets for the two of us - Paid for on a credit card, moved to line of credit
  • Memory Maker: $200CAD - Already paid for on a credit card, moved to a line of credit
  • Food: $1800CAD - this is an extremely high number, but we wanted to aim high. We did a mock-menu, and put in appetizers and dessert with every meal - this will never happen with us, and we'll end up sharing a few meals along the way so this # will absolutely be lower. This does include a dessert party and a Garden Grocer order though.
  • Wild Africa Trek: $580CAD - we haven't actually booked this yet, so this number is just a guess since the price fluctuates. - Update: now booked! Cost was $532CAD so almost $50 less than I had budgeted for! Hurray!
  • Kennel for the dogs: $400CAD - hopefully my mom or my best friend (or some combination of the two) will be able to look after them, but we do need to budget for this amount...
  • Airport Parking: $100CAD - We can usually find a discount code to use.
  • Others (souvenirs, etc): $1000CAD - I'm hoping to keep this number much lower as well.
The money we are saving in our US accounts will be to pay for our food and souvenirs, etc. We are well on our way to having that amount saved, and I was able to crunch a few numbers and find the magic number we need to save each payday that would put us fairly close to the amount we want, and it's 100% feasible. The cost for airport parking won't happen until much closer to the trip, and the cost of a kennel for the dogs wouldn't be charged until we pick them up afterwards, giving us lots of time to save those amounts.

When I mentioned above about moving costs over to our lines of credit for a lower interest rate, it is possible that we have those things paid off already. We are constantly paying our lines of credit down, but also transfer the balance from our credit cards over each month so the balance on the line of credit is always fluctuating. I would love to be at a point where I don't carry a balance on anything at all, but such is life. It will happen one day, but right now there are mortgages to pay and trips to take and concerts to attend!

Since I want to do such a huge trip in 2018, I have goals in mind for where I want my overall debt to be, and how much I'd like to have saved before we decide if we could do a 14 day trip with a cruise (both in my USD and CAD accounts). I am dropping off a few bins of clothes I no longer wear to consignment tomorrow, so hopefully that will give me a little extra money! My job has also been cut to only 36 hours/week for the past year, but we might be getting close to a point where we can go back to 40 hour workweeks. Once we do, all of that extra money from the 4 additional hours per week would be put towards debt/savings (we've been paying all our bills on time and have still been able to take trips and go to things with my reduced paycheck, so there's no reason not to view it as "extra money").

This was a boring post, sorry about that. It also had no pictures, so here's a picture of my crazy cat sitting in the pot of catnip we grew...

I am the same as you! We are young and might as well travel while we can! I think everyone will always have some sort of debt lingering above them but that's just life!!!! I hope your 2018 trip comes to fruition it sounds awesome!

Travel while you can!! Hopefully that won't change as you get older or when/if you have kids, but responsibilities change as you get older and you never know what life will bring you :thumbsup2

Adorable picture of your kitty @fallonkendra :cat:

Oh man, I didn't realize the exchange rate was so bad, that sucks.
But the cute kitty picture kinda makes up for the sad exchange rate!

I agree! I want to have these awesome adult trips before we decide to have kids or anything, since our touring strategy would change significantly at that point.

The more we talk about it, the more it seems like our 2018 trip might happen!

Thanks!

I know, I'll look at a price and think "Oh, that's not too bad!" but then I'll calculate the exchange rate and get sad haha. It works the other way for you guys though! You could visit Canada and would think our restaurants are so cheap!

That cat is crazy haha, she's actually the only female pet we have (and 10 male pets...)

So, we finally sat down and called Disney and booked a time for The Wild Africa Trek! It's something both of us have been reading incredible reviews about, and we both love Animal Kingdom so we figured why not!? It is pricey, at a little over $200USD per person, so hopefully it's worth it!

We knew we wanted to book it on January 10th - that gives Luke a few days to recover after his half marathon. Originally we wanted to try and get the earliest time slot available so we didn't miss out on too many hours in the park, but then we realized it's going to be our second day at AK, and we also really didn't want to give up our breakfast reservation for Boma that morning :rotfl:. We decided to ask for the 11:45am time slot and sure enough, we were able to get the exact time we wanted! :woohoo:We did have to drop our lunch reservation for Rainforest Cafe, but both of us were fine with that (and we knew it would probably happen anyway). Besides, we can always eat at Rainforest Cafe on our 2018 trip!

If we were doing this tour in the middle of summer, I'm sure we would have stuck with our initial plan of first thing in the morning, but since it's January I think the weather will be more than fine for us to be doing this tour in the early afternoon! I'm really excited about it, here's to hoping it's everything I've read about!

That is awesome! I can't wait to read about it! That's one I definitely want to do at some point. I'd love to have the boys do it but it's certainly expensive for the 4 of us so may have to be on another adults only trip lol. And yes I'm sure you'll be fine temp-wise in January!

Life Updates - 118 Days Until Disney:

This year has been a little crazy! We went to Florida in January, California in February, New Brunswick in June, I went to Vancouver with my mom in July, then I went back to New Brunswick in August when my grandmother was admitted to the hospital, and now tomorrow I'm flying to Manitoba (Luke is already there, I just couldn't take any more time off work). Once we get back to Edmonton, I'm looking forward to staying close to home for a few months and hanging out with our pets until it's time to go back to Orlando in the new year :)

Also - I've finally started my new Crohn's medication. I've only gone for one dose, last Wednesday and I'm very optimistic about it. I really think it's starting to work already, I've been feeling much better the past few days... I go back again next week, and then I have to go 4 weeks after that before my next one, and then 8 weeks after there before the next dose, so that'll be the real test. Here's hoping it really is working though!

As of next week, I should be back to 40 hour work weeks for at least a month, with the possibility of overtime as well! We've been on a reduced 36 hour work week for the past year due to falling oil prices (but I still have a job I love to go to everyday, so I have not been complaining about it at all). This is very exciting, as it will mean a little bit of extra money to try and put towards Disney savings and paying down debt faster. How I do with this little extra money will help determine our Disney plans for our 2018 trip...

Our US Savings target is still on track. If we stick to the plan, we should have all of our food costs for our trip saved up, as well as a good chunk of our souvenir/spending money! That's money that does not need to go onto a credit card while we're there - no interest money for you, Bank!

At some point, I'll probably do a post with some of my pictures from my travels this summer :) None of the locations are particularly exciting, but Canada is really beautiful

I don't think I've ever seen pictures of Canada really, so would love if you posted some from your summer travels! Also glad to hear your new medicine seems to be working :)

New Brunswick Trip - June 2016 - Mini Trip Report

I was born and raised in New Brunswick, so it is very important to me to get back there at least once every year. Flights in this country are crazy, and if I can get a flight for under $600 return it's a good deal - otherwise I would be going much more often! (I did end up going back to NB in August, but it cost me a LOT to fly on short notice like that).

Anyways, we decided to go in June this year because I had not one, not two but FIVE cousins graduating high school - all from the same one (and its the school I graduated from, and my mom graduated from, and my dad graduated from...). We flew there on a Thursday, and my dad picked us up from the airport, about an hour and half away. My uncle graciously offered us his car while we were home too, so we didn't need to get a rental car this time - that was a huge savings! (He also owned a truck, so don't worry, we didn't leave him stranded). We had flown red-eye and didn't sleep much on the overnight flight so we didn't do much this day - Luke decided to go for a nap and I followed soon after - and ended up sleeping through the night (I think I slept like 16 hours straight :crazy2:).

Friday after I finally woke up I went to see my hair dresser. I refuse to pay the crazy prices they charge in Edmonton, so I get my hair cut once a year - when I'm back home. Plus, she does not even bat an eyelash when I tell her whatever crazy thing I want to do with my hair this time - the first time I went to her shop, I was like 15 and I had the ends of my hair bleached off and dyed bright blue (I was a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan growing up, and this was during their playoff run in the early 2000's...I could probably do an entire post on my hair over the years:rotfl:- it's been brown, black, blonde, red, pink, short, permed, multicoloured...). I went to my appointment this time with my own hair dye in hand - through trial and error I've figured out what works best for my hair! I refuse to touch bleach myself though, and I'm not great at doing foils on my own head. I handed over my violet and turquoise dye and told her to have fun - she also decided I needed some pink. I did tell her I wanted my roots left natural, but the rest bleached out.

You can see it better in other pictures I'll post farther along.

We did some visiting - spent a lot of time with my grandma and her adorable cats.

We went for supper with my dad at one of the local mom-and-pop restaurants for some greasy goodness:

Luke had the fish and chips, I had the hot turkey sandwich. So good, and so cheap! Luke's 2 pieces of fish and fries was $7.99, and my meal was $12.49. Spoiler alert - we ate here like 3 more times during our trip haha (but I don't have pictures of all of those).

Saturday night was the high school prom - where the graduates dress up in fancy dresses and suits/tuxedos, march around the school while hundreds of people take pictures of them and then they go inside the school gym for their last ever high school dance. I hadn't been to watch the Grand March since my own a decade ago, so I was excited about this! (For anyone wondering - my prom dress was rainbow coloured and purchased on Ebay :rotfl2:). My little cousins all looked amazing, here's one of them:

Yes, I am ten years older than her, and a full foot shorter...

The next few days were just visiting family and friends, and hanging out. I always enjoy going through the random things in my childhood bedroom as well - my room at my dad's has basically been untouched since I moved out (my parents split when I was in my early 20's, mom moved to Alberta to be closer to me, dad stayed in the house). It turns out I had a Minnie Mouse diary when I was young, which I used to write very important things (I also struggled to spell the word Awesome apparently...)

My roommate in university was a Fine Arts student, so at one point I asked her to paint me a picture of a sparkly rainbow unicorn - this is what she gave me. It's been hanging on the wall in my NB room ever since. It makes me smile every time I go home :)

One day we didn't leave my dad's house, since I was not feeling great due to my Crohn's. Another day we drove to the airport to pick up another one of my little cousins who was flying home from Ottawa (her younger brother was one of my cousins graduating).

A week after arriving in New Brunswick, on the following Thursday, it was graduation night. We were ready a little early, and went to one of my cousin's houses to see the graduates and take 4 million pictures of them. At one point, a cousin snapped this pic of Luke and I that I absolutely love

The next night, Friday, I celebrated my 10 year grad reunion. I had a very small class, there were only 42 of us and 23 of us ended up hanging out that weekend. One of the teachers from our school had found a time capsule my class had created when we were 13 years old, and gave it to a classmate (who is now a teacher herself). Oh man, this was entertaining! Our assignment was to write a letter describing our future partners - most of the other girls in my class wrote about their future millionaire/movie star/doctor husbands, and then there was me -

:rotfl2:Yep, I was an interesting child haha. Surprisingly, Luke actually has a lot of the traits I mentioned in that letter, I guess I did get pretty lucky!

We spent an evening sitting around a bonfire with some old friends, whom I had known since I was 5 years old.

I attended a few grad parties, where I got to catch up with A LOT of family. There was a live band playing in the park in the middle of my hometown on the Saturday night, so I went to that with a bunch of my friends. Luke had decided to sign up for a 10km race the following morning, so he skipped going to see the band, and went to bed instead. My dad and I walked home after the show around 2:30 in the morning - needless to say, I did not go to cheer Luke on the next morning!

I've known those girls in the picture above for 23 years now... the one in the white tank top was my best friend in Kindergarten!

New Brunswick Trip - June 2016 - Mini Trip Report Part Two

My hometown is so pretty! It sits right on a river, and everything is so nice and green in June

This is from my uncle's house, I love swimming in his pool - the view is pretty great!

My great aunt's GIANT wild rose bush that was actually planted by my great-grandmother:

I've found that I appreciate going home much more the older I get. I don't think I'll ever live there again, but I love catching up with everyone when I do get back there!

First, I love your hair! When I was young we used to use this stuff called "Sun-In" to bleach the crap out of it lol. I do color it now, and if I were a little younger I'd be more adventurous with the coloring :)
42 in your graduating class!! I had just under 500 lol! Ricky goes to the same HS I did and will have a similar number in his graduating class. It's neat your parents went to the same school you did, my parents, myself and now my boys will all graduate from the same school.
Very pretty pictures of your town and especially your Uncles pool!

Thank you!

I remember Sun-In! I never used it myself, but I had friends who did, and it always ended up frying their hair :crazy2:. I've had people ask me when I'm going to have normal hair, since I'm getting closer to 30 now. I laugh at those people - it's just hair and fun colours make me happy :)

42 in your graduating class!! I had just under 500 lol! Ricky goes to the same HS I did and will have a similar number in his graduating class. It's neat your parents went to the same school you did, my parents, myself and now my boys will all graduate from the same school.

I'm from a really small town of less than 1000 people (but the school draws from a big surrounding area). It was actually a K-12 school, so I went to the same building with most of the same people from the time I was 5 until I was 18...it made things interesting for sure! Instead of just knowing the names of my classmates, I knew their parents' names and siblings' names and pet's names... I appreciate that more and more the older I get.

500 people in one grad class! That was almost the size of my entire school! (I think there were 520 students in the entire K-12 the year I graduated).

I think it's really awesome to have graduated from the same school as most of my family. There are grad photos up in the school hallways of every class since the school opened, so I would walk by my parent's grad pictures almost daily. I'm sure it's nice to know the school well that your boys are going to! I'm a little sad my future children will not have the same school experience I did :(

Very pretty pictures of your town and especially your Uncles pool!

Thank you!

Extra Money! - CAD Promo

So a few days ago, Disney released a promotion on park tickets for Canadian citizens. Luke had already purchased our tickets back in July, so we were a little sad we had missed out on the deal. We decided to give Disney a call anyways to ask about the expiration date - we would have bought our tickets for 2018 but sadly any tickets you buy now are only valid until the end of December 2017. So we asked about a free upgrade to park hoppers (since the current promo price for hoppers is cheaper than the price we paid for our base tickets). We would have been completely fine if they said no, we were just curious. Instead, we were informed that they could do a complete refund! We had read the fine print on our order where it says tickets are non-refundable so we hadn't even asked! Of course, the refund would be issued based on the exchange rate as of that day (which is worse than when we originally bought), but we would be able to rebuy at the new promo price! Here's the math:

Original purchase: 7-day base tickets (x2) plus Memory Maker - $740+$149 = $937US after tax which = $1278CAD when we purchased them in July
Refund: $937US which will = ~$1230CAD based on current exchange rate
Promo price: 7-day base tickets (x2) plus Memory Maker - $555+$149 = $740US after tax (basically MM is free!) which will =~$973CAD

So we saved ~$305 - ~$48 (lost in exchange rate flucuating) which is still a savings of ~$257CAD! Just for making a 20 minute phone call!

We now need to remember to bring our passports with us to the park the first day to prove we are Canadian when we pick up our tickets at Will-Call , but that's fine. We saved ~$195US, which will easily cover a few meals while we are there!

I love your new hair! It's so fun and I love the different colors!!

That picture of you and Luke is beautiful! So perfect!

Your hometown looks amazing. So peaceful and beautiful!

Yay for saving money on the tickets - that's always awesome! It's nice that they released a promotion for Canadians ... they really should do that more often! (I know they have them a lot for the UK, but I'm always surprised they don't have promotions more often for Canada)

AWESOME that you saved money! I wish they would have deals like that for the US! Your mini trip report is so cute and you are so right, Canada is a beautiful place! When you talk about flying from place to place, I had never really thought about just how big Canada is!!!
