The Running Thread - 2016

Saturday, November 12th --- Outer Banks 8k (using as an easy run warmup for marathon...no goal)
Sunday, November 13th -------Outer Banks Marathon (sooooooooo reluctant to provide an actual goal but let's go with 4:10)
I may be out there for this. I am waitlisted for Peak to Creak, if that comes through it will be my fall marathon, otherwise OBX is my second choice

Ran 13.1 this morning, then came home to watch the end of the Olympic marathon. Now, I was running at an easy pace, but it is still a little disheartening to see these guys finish a full in less time that I finished my half today. :worried:

Meb slipped right at the finish line and the spectators gasped (worried that he might have injured himself, I think). He was amazing. He smiled, knocked out a few pushups, then rose and crossed the finish line. :worship:

Meb is a class act. Was really hard to see him struggling with stomach issues.

@CheapRunnerMike with an overall time of 10:40:48. Awesome job!! Beat your goal time by 19 minutes. Looking forward to the recap.

You. Are. An. Ironman!!!!

Way to go Mike

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?

ATTQOD. I really enjoyed the cat and mouse that went on in the womens olympic tri during the run portion. I watched the first part of the marathon, until I went to church. The announcer saying "they aren't really going that fast" when they finished their first 2 miles in a sub 5mm pace and watching people trying to keep up with the runners for just a small portion of time both made me chuckle.

ATYQOTD: Race goal near term. Break 3:30 for the Marathon. Longer term BQ. Distance goal for this year run more than 2000 miles this calendar year.

Rest days kill me......I am trying to take it slow and do the right thing [couch to 5k] but is there really any harm in running every day? I have
a yearning need to see real progress......or is it a case of be careful what you wish for?

It can fell like it takes forever to build up, but rest days are really important. Running puts a strain on your body and you want to give it time to rest so that your body can adapt to the strains of running without getting injured. If you get injured it will take you much longer to build up to where you want to be.

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?

Except for the God awful primetime (and sometimes otherwise) coverage, I enjoyed the vast majority of it... except when a medalist was described as 'overcoming' a doping band. That ruined it a few times. (Lifetime Olympic band, if you ask me. There's an ideal to strive for there.)

Gwen Jorgensen's triathlon victory was awesome! Jared Ward coming in at 6th in the marathon was sweet! (I still have trepidations about Salazar &co., so my response to Rupp's bronze is tepid.) The D'Agostino/Hamblin moment was terrific. I love the enthusiasm and emotion of all the athletes who did better than they thought they could, either for a medal or otherwise.

While I think it was a mistake to host the Olympics in a city of questionable resources, and I continue to worry about the health of people who travelled there... There has been more than the usual amount of insufferable anti-Olympic sentiment this time around. I don't know if these people aren't athletes or have a complete lack of sportsmanship, but pursuing the Olympic ideal will always have great meaning to me, and the regular reminder of it is priceless.

Good luck with Peak to Creak and let me know if OBX marathon gets promoted to become your fall marathon.

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?

ATTQOTD: I only got to watch a few events this year. I watched the bike race the first weekend it I thought it was amazing. I did not have the opportunity to watch a single running event, and I am very sad about that. Guess I will have to watch replays if it looks like I missed something special.

Final Flood Update: So, just incase I have stated, our home is safe. I spent the weekend helping friends and family gut their homes. After doing that all day, it was just getting home, bath, food, and sleep. I have done 20 milers that seemed easier than the labor I have done over the last few days. I have not run in 10 days, but I should be able to get a few TM miles in this afternoon.

If you have a race time for a race you recently completed, please repost it as it is likely I may have overlooked it, and the same for any new races waiting to get on the main list. I am looking forward to getting things back to normal this week.
You're a good person @LSUlakes - cleaning up after flood damage is back-breaking, and potentially heart-breaking, work.

And I'm sad to say you missed some amazing track events. You'll want to watch replays for just about all of the races. Usain Bolt. Allyson Felix. Wayde van Niekerk obliterating the 400 record from lane 8, cheered on by Grandma the Coach. Matt Centrowitz flat out owning the 1500. Mo Farah getting tripped in the 10K (by training partner and Marathon bronze medalist Galen Rupp) but rolling to his feet and going on to win, then repeating in the 5K. Paul Chelimo fighting through the pack to take silver in the 5K, only to be DQ'd and then un-DQ'd, all on live TV.

For this novice runner it was interesting watching elite athletes make the same simple mistake I make all the time - they would go out too fast. In the women's 5K the overwhelming favorite, Ayana from Ethiopia (who had easily won the 10K), opened up a huge lead midway through with the apparent goal of breaking the record. The 2 Kenyon runners stayed on their pace, ran as a team along with the pack, and then were able to catch and pass Ayana with 2 laps to go, winning gold and silver and breaking the Olympic record in the process.

And thanks to Meb, I now plan to push out 5 or 10 for Sarge at the 20 mile mark in January. I'll need to work a set of pushups into my long runs going forward...

ATTQOTD: I recorded everything and watched or skimmed through on FF (TiVo) all of it except golf and tennis. I did get to watch the marathon and all of the T&F stuff, although I confess I don't watch every minute of the marathon. I fast forward through some middle sections where the pack isn't really doing anything. :)

@LSUlakes Glad you're okay! Sad that not all of your family and friends were as lucky but it's great of you to help out. I have one new race posted below:

24 - Anisum - The Great Pumpkin Run (NG / N/A)

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?
There were so many great moments it's hard to pick a favorite. I love the Olympics and DVRed as much as I could so I could get through commercials and see even more than I would have if I had watched it live. Some of my top moments were the Fiji men's rugby win the nation it's first medal (and a gold at that), watching the races particularly the marathons and the women's tri, the U.S. Women's waterpolo team's victory, the mountain bike races, the swimming particularly Simone Manuel, the Brazilian canoer Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos was amazing to watch in all of his races, and so many others.

Watching the marathon I was surprised at how many people were wearing the Nike Olympic shoes that seemed so popular. I know Nike made the same design in a ton of different shoe models but I just didn't expect that many people to be able to wear Nikes especially at that distance. I haven't found a pair of Nikes I can run distances in without wrecking my feet. Are they custom made for each athlete? That was my biggest question of the marathons and the track and field as a whole. I found it amazing that Shalane Flanagan and Des Linden kept their pace and position pretty much the whole race though what surprised me about that race was that they were some of the few near the front who were following the tangents. I know that NBC was saying the other women were used to having pacers (which is impressive considering their natural pace) but I would have expected someone would tell them that the red line was the tangent. It just seemed odd. Finally, I was endlessly amused by the NBC anchor's confusion when Galen Rupp got a new hat at the water station.

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?

My current race goal is to hit a sub-7:00 minute/mile in a 5K. I have two coming up in October so that means August - October will include a lot of fartleks, intervals, and hard paced runs. After I accomplish this, I'll focus more on my half and marathon times.

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?

Glad to know you're safe!

Basically my favorite moment(s) of the Olympics were the 100m and 200m finals. Watching Usain Bolt is always a treat as he has been one of my favorite athletes for years Plus his finish to the 4x100 relay was crazy!

QOTD: What races/goals are you currently training for, and what are your long term goals/plans for your running?
ATTQOTD: My season runs roughly Sept - April and looks like this:
Oct. 15K
Nov. Lumiere's Challenge
Jan. Dopey
Feb. Gasparilla (maybe) - haven't decided on a distance
April Dark Side Challenge

No time goals. Long term, I just want to keep avoid injury and keep enjoying the ride!

It's now been two weeks since I went to the physio for my IT Band issues (both legs). I've spent the last week doing everything the physio and Dr google have suggested. I really feel like i am making progress. Yesterday I was able to go out and test it. For the last 6 weeks I haven't been able to run more than 200 meters without sharp pains in both knees. Yesterday I did a (sloooow) 5k. No pain at all in my right knee, and pain in my left knee only when I tried to up the pace (at which point I would pull back). Took me 35 mins, but I was so happy to just be able to run. I was a bit worried that today I would find I had trouble walking up and down stairs, but no pain today at all. Plan is to do another week of physio and stretching and vitamin c taking and then test it again next weekend.
Great news - very glad to hear it! I'll echo @Chasing Dopey: don't stop with the exercises as you start feeling better. You've got this!

I have been thinking about the recommendation to always run a race with things to which you are accustomed: shoes, clothes, breakfast, etc. I have a standard pre-run breakfast. Since I will be staying in a hotel and don't have a kitchen, what portable meals do people recommend? I would have time to train myself to a new normal.
When I've been without a kitchen, but room had a coffee maker, I've made instant oatmeal. The ones that come in little cups made it extra convenient.

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?
ATTQOTD: Oh, I can't narrow it to only one! How 'bout a Top 5?! :)

~ Watching Usain Bolt nail his Triple Triple!
~ MEB!!!
~ Watching Brazil take Gold in football (soccer)!
~ Michael Phelps and Katy Ledecky. Bam!
~ Seeing the US women all place in the top 10 in the marathon!

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?
Everything! I watched as much Olympic coverage as I possibly could. I unfortunately missed the marathon though. I saw Galen Rupp finished in 3rd though in what was his 2nd ever marathon. My teacher who ran with him in the Olympic trials said he's kind of stuck up and thinks he's so much better than everyone unlike Meb who everyone loves.

What month is the race? TIA

@CheapRunnerMike, congratulations!!!

@LSUlakes, glad you are safe and back with the QOTD! Would you be able to add two races coming up for me? I may amend this and have a goal for Hershey, but let's see how DL goes first. There are a lot of hills in Hershey. :)
9/4 - sourire - Disneyland 1/2 Marathon (NG)
10/16 - sourire - Hershey 1/2 Marathon (NG)

ATTQOTD: Loved so much of the Olympics!! Greatest moments for me to watch: Phelps going over to his family between races to kiss the baby, Sanne Wevers winning the gold with her balance beam routine - it was like ballet on the beam - absolutely beautiful, the D'Agostino/Hamblin moment, and MEB at the finish!

I can't believe I forgot to mention Wayde van Nierkerk in the 400. I kept hearing the talk about Michael Johnson's record possibly falling and I doubted it the whole time. I thought there was know way it would happen. It was a great race, and the story of Wayde and his coach was awesome.

@LSUlakes glad you are safe and sound and back here posting.

Favorite Olympic moment was the women's gymnastics team winning gold. I also loved watching Usain Bolt. The guy is just unbelievable. I missed the marathons though. Just managed to forget about them and didn't set the DVR to catch them. :(

I KNOW! DW and I got the impression they weren't watching what we were watching. The hat swap may have been new, but it makes perfect sense and wasn't that big a mystery.

Re: the shoes... Yes, the elites can get theirs customized. In addition, a few factors impact their shoe needs compared to us mortals: They are only out there for 2:10 to 2:30. Their speed and skill also means their impact loads are very light. Their shoes just don't take the same kind of abuse. I'm also curious about those Nikes, but I'm quite sure they wouldn't work for me.

EDIT: Oh, and these guys don't weigh anything.

ATTQOTD - Women's gymnastics - never disappoints, and this year was no exception. I also really enjoyed the track 7 field competitions.

Don't care for Bolt. He really needs to experience something in his life to teach him humility. I also had to mute my TV more times than I could count. The poor sportsmanship shown by Brazilian fans throughout the Olympics really soured me on the country. If that is a part of their culture, I am fine never visiting Brazil.

Great Meb story - in DC we have the Spring Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run (run by some of the fine RunDisney posters here), and this time around this happened:

"Perhaps the most popular runner all day, though, was nowhere near contention. Olympian Meb Keflezighi, who finished in 1:00:41, came to the District to check the race off his bucket list and act as a pacer for the six-minute-mile group."

Could you imagine being 620 B Jay and finishing hand-in-hand with Meb?

In my mind, I hear Meb at mile 9 say to the group... "hey folks, we just need a 5:19 final mile to hit our goal perfectly. Who's with me?"

ATTQOTD: I enjoyed watching Biles...its cool to watch someone who is so good at what they do. I know nothing about gymnastics, but I think its cool how we have become so dominant in the sport.

Great stuff watching how well we did in the Marathon. I also enjoyed watching our women in the 4x400.
